JAMES m. AULT, or DECATUR, INDIANA.
BUILDING-BLOC Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 27, 1910.
Application filed January 19, 1907. Serial No. 353,122.
To all whom it may concern: 1
Beit known that I, JAMES M. AULT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Decatur, in the county of Adams and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Building-Blocks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in building blocks, preferably made of cement, or other plastic material, and the object is to provide a block which will prevent rain or snow from forcing through and making the inside wall damp.
Another object of my invention is to do away with the half or mitered blocks, and I have provided means whereby the blocks at the corners can be connected together, and at the same time make a tight connection.
My invention relates to certain other novel features of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter describe and pointed out in the claim. I
In the accompanying drawings Figure l is a view of a portion of a wall. Fig. 2 is a bottom view. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the corner blocks. Fig. 4 is a' view of another corner block. Fig. 5 is a bottom view of one of the corner blocks.
A, represents the block, and B, B, are vertical openings or apertures through the block. The block has a raised tongue 1 on the upper edge, and on the lower edge it is.
provided with a groove 2, which is adapted to receive the tongue 1, of the block upon which it is placed.
The ends of the blocks are provided with a tenon 3, and a mortise 4, WhlCl'l tenons are received in the mortise of the adjoining block. In this way, a tight connection is made, and which adds strength to the wall, and prevents air and water from sifting through any cracks which might be formed by the ordinary block.
In the corner blocks, I have a projection 5 or recess 6 formed on one side, which are adapted to interlock with either the mortise 4 or tenon 3, and in this-way do away with the half or miter blocks.
On the corner blocks, or all the blocks might be made in the same manner, I have length, as in the other blocks, but are only cut away enough so that. the block will fit over the tongues of the two blocks and its outer surface will. be flush with the surfaces of the other blocks, and not leave an opening or break in the outer surface. These corner blocks are made right and left, so that the projections or recesses always correspond.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I have manufacture, and which at the same time does away with the half or miter blocks, and which will revent the rain or wind from blowing or sifting through the walls.
It is evident that many slight changes might be made in the form and arrangement of the several parts described without departing from the spirit and scope of my 1nvention, and hence I do not wish to limit myself to the exact construction herein set forth, but
' Having fullydescribed my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A hollow building block of rectangular form having two orifices extending therethrough from top to bottom only, the block having a depression or mortise at one of the terminals of the orifices, and a tenon atthe opposite terminal of the orifices surrounding I the same, whereby the block is made to fit corresponding parts in adjacent blocks placed above and below, each block also provided with a vertically disposed mortise and tenon extending from top to bottom in the solid part of the block and unbroken by orifices and adapted to fit the corresponding parts of the next adjacent blocks in a tler.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
