Description

waited tatet A CHARLES W.-AEMsTEoNe, OE DETROIT, MIOHTGAnAssTeNOE To HTM- s ELE AND THoMAsH. ARMSTRONG, OE SAME, PLAOE.
y Lette/rs Patent No.9? ,265, dated November 30, 1869. i
l IMPROVE!) QOMPRESS.
The Schedule referred to in the'a Letters Patent and making part rof the same. I
To whom. it may concern Beit known that I, CHARLES W. ARMSTRONG, of Detroit, in the county of Wayne, and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Compress; and I do declare that the following is a true and accurate description thereof', reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereo and being a part of this specification. Y
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention.
Figure 2 is a transverse section of the same.
Iiike' letters refer to like parts in each ligure.
The nature of this invention relates to the construction of a compress, by means of which hot water and-other like applications may be made to the human form, and consists in providing within said compress a chamber, which may be filled with heated sand, or similar matter, for the purpose of preventing the heated liquid with which the compress is iilled, from cooling too rapidly."
. In the drawings- A represents the outer shell of the compress, which 4should be made ofthe propershape tofiit any desired.
portion ot' the huma-n frame. This shell should be made water-tight, and be provided with a proper opening, through which to fill and empty the compress.
.This opening `maybe stopped by a cap, a, cork, or
other convenient device.
B is a tight diaphragm, secured in such a manner as to divide the compress into two distinct and sepgree which, at its first application, may bc endured by the patient, and be benecial.
At the'time of lling chamber c,`asabove meni tioned, the chamber b should bc filled with sand, or
other appropriate material, heat-ed to a higher dey gree' than the liquid in chamber c. .l t will be found,
y then, that the effect of the heat in chamber l) will be to increase somewhat the tem prature ofthe liquid in chamber c, which increase of heat may be endured by the patient after the first applications, and to maintain a more uniform temperature in chamber c than cou'ld be otherwise done.
fha-t I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As a new article of manufacture, the compress A, divided into the chambers b and c, by means of the diaphragm B, and provided with suitable inlet and outlet-openings, when constructed, arranged, and op* erating substantially as set forth and shown.
