Letters Patent N 94,627, dated September 7, 1869.
STOVE-GRATE.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the name.
.To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN MORAN, of Washington, in the county of \Vashington, and District of Columbia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Stoves; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon;
This invention relates to an improved device for raising and lowering the grates in stoves; and consists in the employment of a jacket, by means of which the gear-wheels and rack-bars are connected and kept always in contact with each other.
In devices for perforn'iing this kind of work, it has been found that the effect of the heat to which they are exposed has been to cause the operating parts to 7 wheels; and
Figure 3, a front view of the same.
In the drawings A represents an ordinary cooking-stove.
n represents a grate of any desired form, to the bottom. of which is attached the bent arms a.
a represents a line of cogs, attached, as shown, to the bent arms a.
B represents a shaft, supported in suitable hearings 1)" represents a jacket, of suitable shape, which passes around the cogs a", both ends being attached to the shaft.
By this arrangement the cogs are kept in contact with the gear-wheels, and the amount of friction is rendered very small. At the point I), in the jacketb, a portion is cut away, for the purpose of allowing, the cogs to rise as high as possible. A pin, a, prevents them from being raised high enough to be disengaged fromuthe gear-wheels.
0 represents a ratchet-wheel upon the shaft B,outside of the stove, with which the pawl c engages. By this means the grate is retained in any desired position.
I do not claim the idea of raising and lowering the grates of stoves by means of gear-wheels and rackbars, for this I know to be old; but
Having thus fully described my invention,
Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is-
The jacket b arranged upon the shaft B, and surrpunding the rack-bar (1?, in the manner and for the purpose described.
This specification signed and witnessed, this14th day of February, 1868.
