Be it known that I, ERAsTUs DE MOULIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Greenville, in the county of Bond'and State of Illinois, have invented a newand useful rl `iickl\/liiror, of which the following is a specification. i
This invention relates to initiation devices and is more particularlyY a trick 'mirror which can be used as a dressing glass either with or without producing a startling effect upon the user. .Y
The object of the invention lis to provide means whereby a jet of liquid can be di rected onto the person using the mirror, the explosion of a detonator being produced multaneously with the discharge of the jet.
lVith this and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction and vcombinations of parts whichv willbe hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings is shown the preferredv form of theinvention.
In said drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the mirror showing the mechanism set. Fig` 3 is a section on line A-B, Fig. 2.
Referring to the figures by characters 'of reference, 1 designates a mirror frame which can be suitably ornameiited and extending tliroughthe frame and adjacent the mirror is a nozzle 2,which may be of any preferred construction and is preferably sol made as to direct a spray of minute jets across the mirror at such an angle as to approximately strike the head of the person looking into the mirror. A bracket 3 is arranged within a box-like housing 4C located upon the back of the mirror and supported by this bracket is a bulb or other conipressible liquid con'- tainer 5 connected by means of a tube 6 with the rear end of the nozzle. A bearing block 7 is secured within the housing 1 and pivotally mounted thereon is a lever 8 constituting a trigger, one end of the lever being provided with a shoulder 9 while the opposite end portion of the lever bears against the sto o pin 10. A spring 11 is connected to one end of the lever and to the housing and serves to hold said lever pressed against the pin. An arm 12 extends from one end of the lever and through one wall of the housing and has a button upon its outer end as indicated at 13. Another bearing block 14 is secured within the housing and pivotally l mounted thereon is a lever 15 constituting a hammer. The pivot pinlG of this hammer I has a coiled Ispring 17 mounted thereon, one l ond of the spring being attached to the hammer while the other end is secured to the bearing block. Said hammer is therefore `held with one end normally in contact with a holding block 18 in which a cartridge or other desired Vdeto'nating device may be placed. This block has an opening therein to receive the detonator and cap 21 extend- 1 ing over the outlet end of the opening. An
arm 22 extends from the hammer 15 close to that end thereof which normally contacts ,with block 18 and by means of this arm the hammer can beswung against the stress of its spring until one end thereof is brought into engagement with shoulder 9. vThe spring 11 serves to hold the hammer and the lever 8 in part-s have once been removed from arm 22 is designed, when the hammer is set as above described to swing against the' broad end 23 of a compressing lever 24C. This lever has an enlarged head at one end held normally in contact with the bulb or container 5 by means of spring 2G. IVhen, however', the hammer is set, it bears upon the broad end of lever 24 and holds head 25 `out of contact with the container 5.
Brackets 27 l extend from the housing l and by means thereof the mirror can be readily suspended from a wall or other structure. After 'the trigger lever 8 and the hammer have been placed in engagement in the manner hereinbefore described and the compress-ing lever thus secured out of coni tact with the container, the said'container is compressed and permitted to draw liquid Vthereinto through the nozzle from a suitable receptacle. The mirror is then suspended from a wall or other structure and is ready for use. The person being initiated is conducted to the mirror and while looking tliereinto the attendant presses button 13. This causes the trigger 8 to move against the action of the spring 11 so as to become disengaged from the hammer and said hammer will promptly be propelled by its spring 17 so as to strike a cartridge which has previously been placed within the opening in the holding block. Said cartridge will therefore be exploded. During this operation the compressing lever is actuated by its spring 26 so as to propel head 25 against the container 5 and compress it. The contents of the container will thus be expelled through the nozzle in a series of minute jets which Will be directed into the face of the person looking into the mirror.
Although the mechanism herein described is especially designed for use in connection with a mirror it is to be understood that the same can be employed in various forms of trick devices other than mirrors. For example the mechanism may be readily applied to the lifting and spraying machine covered by Patent No.- 873,733 and to the Water tank covered by Patent No. 698,466.
Instead of ejecting a liquid from the device when the mechanism is released, a poivder can be expelled through the nozzle, or, if preferred, a small soft ball or other pro jectile may be discharged at the initiate. Although a bulb has been shown and described it is to be understood that if preferred a pump or other forcing device may be'used in lieu thereof. While the mechanism has been described as being released by pushing on the button 13, it is to be understood that the brush or comb which is attached to the mirror can be so connected to the mechanism as to release it when the brush or comb is pulled. Such a. means has I been shown in Fig. 2 wherein a cord 2S is shown attached to the trigger 8 near the shoulder 9 and a brush or comb may be attached to this cord, so that by pulling on the cord the trigger Will release the lever 15. This form of actuating means can be used either in connection with or separately from the button 13.
Obviously various other changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of the parts Without departing from the spirit or sacrificing the advantages of the invention.
that is claimed is,
1. The combination with a frame and a nozzle extending therethrough; of a container connected to the nozzle, an actuating member coperating therewith to expel the contents of the container through the nozzlerv` means for automatically actuating said member, a trigger, and a hammer, said trigger constituting means for engagingr and holding the hammer and said hammer when thus engaged holding the compressing member out of contact with the container.
2. The combination with a structure having a nozzle extending theretlnmigli; ot a container connected to the nozzle, an actuating member therefor, a trigger, a springcontrolled lever disposed to shift and hold said member out of contact with the. container, yielding means for holding the trigger in engagement ivith the lever when in holding position, and means for actuating said member when released from the lever.
The combination With a structure having a nozzle extending therethrough; of a container connected to the nozzle, a spring actuated member for actuating the same to expel its contents, a spring-controlled trigger, a spring-controlled lever for engagement With the trigger, said lever when in engaged position constituting means for holdin the compressing member out of contact With the container, and means for actuating the trigger to release the lever.

The combination with a structure having a nozzle extending tlierethrough; ot a container connected to the nozzle, a spring actuated member for actuating the same to expel its contents, a spring-controlled trigger, a spring-control]ed lever for engagement with the trigger, said lever when in engaged position constituting meansv for holding the compressing member out of contact with the container, and means tor holding` a detonating device in the. path of the lever.
