CHARLES P. WALTER, F HARRISBURG, PENNSYLVANEA.
REiNFmCED GONCRETE CONSTRUCTBONt $pecification of Letters Patent. A
racemes time as, root.
Application filed October 23, 1906. Serial SMLZQO.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Cinemas P. WALTER, a citizen of the United States; residing at Harrisburg, in the county of Dauphin and State of Pennsylvania, have invented anew and useful Reinforced Concrete Construction, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to reinforced concre te structures such as street curbs and the like and it's-object is to provide one or more reinforces constituting a fixed part of the structure and which are so shaped as to resistv the effects of climatic changes and reduce them to the minimum. I
A still further object is to provide reinforcing devices located at points within the structure where'the greatest wear occurs, said devices being fixedly secured so as to prevent their separation from the structures.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists of certainmovel features of construction" and combihations of parts.
'reinforcing strip and showing a modified form of anchoring device; and Fig. 6 is aview similar to Fig. 4 and showing a modified form of anchor.
Referring to the figures by characters 'of. reference, 1 is a solid metallic strip triangular in cross section and which is fitted along one edge of a cement body 2, said strip being held in position by anchors in the form of wires 3 riveted orotherwise secured within the strip 1 and having their embedded ends hooked or curled as shown at 4. It will be noted that one of the outer faces of the strip 1 is smaller thanthe other outerface. This is designed to,
meet various conditions in the manufacture of reinforced concrete structures, it being the intention to use strips of the same propor tions in various forms of structures of this character. Where the reinforcing strip is used with a concrete curb it is placed at the junction of the two exposed faces of the curb so that wheels, etc., will contact solely withthe metallic reinforce.
. body of the structure will of course hold bedded in one face of said body, sai
. Instead of using a single strip for reinforcing purposes as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, two
strips may be employed as shown in Fig. 3, one strip being disposed along each edge of the front face of the curb. Each. strip of course has separate anchoring means. As an additional means of reinforcing the curb a third 'strip may be interposed between the edge'strips as indicated at 5 in Fig. 4-, in which event bowed anchoring wires 5 are threaded through the inner portion of the strip '5 and placed in engagement with the an-v chors. 3 prior to moldingothe body 2 of the curb. It will of course e understood that other forms of anchors may be employed,
such as a continuous wire 6 threaded through i the reinforcing strip, as hown in Fig. ,5, so as to form anchoring loops.
Still another form of anchoring device is shown in Fig. 6 wherein a substantially ilshaped anchor 7 having hooked, ends '8 is slrown embedded within the body 2 and held uponthe trip 1 by means of a nail 9 whichis insertedthrough an opening in said strip, its

parts assembled.
. Considerable importance is attached to.
the fact that the reinforcing strip is triangular in cross section and solid as it has-been found by actual tests that curved or angular reinforces will not resist the action of heat and cold sufficiently tc' render them service able.
The preferredform of the invention has been set forth in the foregoing description but I do not limit myself thereto as Iain aware that modifications maybe made f therein without departing from the spirit or. sacrificing the advantages thereof, and 1 therefore reserve the right to maize, such changes as fairly .fall within the scope of the claims.
- 'W'hat. is claimed: I
1 A structure com rising a concrete body,
em strip having an exposed face, and being slotted and triangular in cross section, there being a plua combined wear an reinforcing strip IOQ tog,
rality of apertures within said strip, and anchoring devices engaging-the apertured poi 'tion of the strip and having lent ends en bedded within the body.-
2. A structure comprising a concrete body, acombined wear and reinforcing strip embedded one face of said body, said strip IEO ram
being solid and triangular in cross section and having a plurality of apertures therein, and anchoring moans detaohably engaging the apertured portion of the strip and embedded and concealed Within the body.
3 A structure comprising a concrete body, a reinforcing strip embedded therein and having an-exposed face, said strip being provided With apertures, an anchoring device upon the apertured portion of the strip and comprising integral members disposed at an angle to each other and hayingbent ends, said anchoring members being embedded Within thebody.
4. A structure comprising a concrete body, a plurality of separate reinforcing strips embedded therein, each strip having an exposed face, and separate interlocking anchoring seam/5 means upon the respective strips and embedded Within the body.
5. A structure comprising a concrete body, a plurality of separate reinforcing strips embedded therein, each strip having an exposed face and provided with a plurality of apertures, separate anchoring means upon each of the strips and embedded within the body, the anchoring means of the respective strips interlocking within the body.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto al'lixed my sign ature in the presence of two, Witnesses.
