HAMMER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 18, 1907.
Application filed October 1, 1906. Serial No. 336,893.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WVILLIAM H. PARKER, Jr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elgin, in the county of Antelope and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hammers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention contemplates certain newand useful improvements in hannners designed particularly for carpenters use, and arranged to hold a nail in position in the head of the hammer for its initial attachment or insertion in the part in which it is intended to be driven, a device of this character being especially useful in more or less inaccessible places or points where it would be impossible for the carpenter to hold the nail with one hand and drive it with the other hand into the Wood far enough for the nail to hold until it could be driven "home.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved construction of hammer of this character which will be.durable and efficient in operation for nails of varying sizes, as will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for effecting the result, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure l is a side elevation of a hammer embodying the improvements of my invention; Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof; Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
As shown in the drawing, the head 1 of my improved hammer is provided with a claw 2 and is formed at the base of the claw members with anoutwardly facing tapered socket 3 designed to receive the head portion of a nail 4.
' In the practical operation of the device, it I is obvious that the nail may be held firmly 1 enough for the initial driving operation in the head of the hammer by forcing its head tightly into engagement with the tapered walls of the socket 3 and it is manifest, also, that by the provision of this socket, nails of different sized heads may be accommodated and initially driven by my device and that a nail may be held in the head of the hammer at different angles relatively thereto according to the angle at which it is desired to drive the nail.
From the foregoing description in connec tion with the accompanying drawing, it will be seen that I have provided a very simple and efficient device of this character, which is effective for holding nails within a wide range of sizes, owing to the peculiar construction of the socket 3. A hammer of this character will be found very useful for carpenters for holding a nail until it can be started, because the carpenter will be able to reach higher up than without the hammer, and start the nails in places that will be inaccessible or very inconvenient without the use of this tool.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
As a new article of manufacture, the herein described hammer head provided between its claws with an outwardly facing tapered socket designed to receive the head of a nail and hold. the latter by frictional contact with the tapering walls of said socket, thereby being susceptible of accommodating heads of different sizes and of holding the head frictionally in different positions so that the nail may assume different angles with. respect to the hammer head.
In testimony whereof I alliX my signature in presence of two witnesses. I
