citizen of the UnitedStates, residing at Mil` waukee, county of Milwaukee, and State nof Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in a Combined Insole and 'Retaining Dev-ice, of-which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in a combined insole and retaining device.

The object of my invention is, lirst, to provide an insole which is not only adapted to keep a persons feet warm and dry, but which will also form a soft elastic cushion adapted to prevent the formation of corns, callouses, &c., and also to add greatly to the comfort yof lthe wearer; second, to provide means for re.

taining medicated or other pads infplace between the afflicted portions of a person's foot and the shoe, whereby suchparts may be shielded from contact with or pressure from the shoe until they are cured.

- The construction of my device is explained by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a side view of the insole and retaining device as it appears' upon vthe foot vof the wearer. Fig. 2 represents a vertical section of the same as worn next to the persons foot within the hose, one of the pads being also shown. in section. Fig. 3 represents my device as worn outside the hose, one ofthe pads being indicated by dotted lines; and Fig. 4 represents a portion of the insole in connection with a corn-pad of ordinary construction, the pad being shown connected with the insole by a series of stitches.

Like parts are identified by the same reference-letters throughout the several views.

A represents the insole, which comprises all that art between the res ective ends of the device and which is, a apted to bear against the bottom of a persons foot.

B represents the retaining device, which comprises all that part which engages around ghe sides and upper portions of a persons oot.

C represents a ersons foot, and D represents a hose of or inary construction. While the insole is preferably worn next to the persons foot, as indicated in Figs. 1 and 2, the same may, if desired, be used u on the outside of the hose, as indicated in ig. 3.

It will be observed that the sole proper is made of a thick soft material adapted to keep a persons feet warm and shield them from injurious eifects of contact with the soles of the shoe, while' the retaining device B is pref erably made Iof light thin elastic material, which is adapted to closely fit the sides and upper portions of the foot and prevent the insole from becoming disengaged therefrom as the foot is withdrawn from the shoe, the parts A and B being preferablywoven or 't integrally. It is a well-known fact that when a persons feet are afliicted with corns or bunions it is difficult to protect such afflicted parts from contact with the shoe. This object is accomplished through my device by securing a protecting shiel or pad E to the inner surface of the insole by stitches, as indicated in Figs. 3 or 4, or in an other suitable manner, these pads being o course located in such a position as will best protect the afflicted parts 'and prevent them from contact with the shoe.'

F represents a series of stitches by which the pad E is secured to the insole or to the insole-retainin device.

When the pads E are thus stitc ed to the insole or retaining device, they are securely held in place thereby in the desired position'- to protect the afflicted parts.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isf-- 'portion adapted to det'achably engage the extreme sides and ends of the foot of a hose and hold said sole removably in place upon or within the same, and one or more elastic pads secured to the inner surface of the sole IOO or the sole-retaining device, all substantially as and for the pu ose s ecliied.
