TELESCOPIC CASE OR BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. '7, 1905.
Application filed July 8, 1904. Serial No. 215,719.
To all rah/0m, it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLEs W. BARNES, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Telescopic Case or Box, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to improvements in telescopic cases or boxes; and the obj eat of my invention is to produce a cheap and simple structure of this character which besides being telescopic is adjustable, and my invention is especiallyintended to produce a cheap, easily-operated, and secure adjusting means, to the end that the case may be made sufliciently cheap for the use of laundries and other commercial concerns, so that if used by laundries, for instance, the laundered goods can be delivered in the package and the soiled linen returned in the same case. In this way the case can be used over and over to the advantage of both the laundryman and the consumer, and thus the necessity of paper and twine is avoided, and the goods are carried in much better shape than when the ordinary method is used. My invention is not limited to laundry use, however, but is intended to provide a simple adjustable telescopic case which can be used for general commercial purposes.
With these ends in view my invention consists of certain features of construction and combinations of parts, which will be hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in both views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the closed case embodying my invention; and Fig. 2 is a broken section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1, showing the fastening.
The case is provided, as usual, with two box- like members 10 and 11, the latter closing over the former and being slidable up and down thereon. The members can be made of any suitable material, and they should be of generally rectangular shape. The inner member 10 has on the end portions and on the inner side a spring-wire 12, which lies flat against the wall of the member 10 and which is clenched at the end, as shown at 13. This wire is formed into spring-buttons 14, each projecting out through the hole 15 in the member 10 and through a hole 15 in the member 11. It will be seen that there are a series of these holes 15% the same being arranged in a vertical row, so that the ease members may be adjusted vertically and fastened by permitting the button 14 to enter a desired hole 15 It is important to have the wire 12 on the inside of the member 10, be cause in this way a double effect is obtained. First, there is the springiness occasioned by the buckling of the member 10, and, second, the wire 12 is itself springy, and so by pressing on the buttons 14 they may be pushed inward to permit of ready adjustment of the parts, and'at the same time they spring outward, so as to readily enter the holes 15*.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that I thus provide a very simple adjustable telescopic package which is very cheap and which can be used for many commercial purposes.
I am of course aware that telescopic cases have heretofore been used; but I am not aware that they have been adapted as specified for cheap commercial use in handling oods. g Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination with the outer and inner box members fitting one over the other and the outer member having a vertical row of holes therein, of a spring-wire fastened at its ends to the inner side of the inner member and formed into buttons which project through the wall of the inner member and register with the holes of the outer member.
2. In a device of the kind described, the combination of the outer and inner telescopic boX members, the outer member having plural rows of holes therethrough, and a springwire fastened at the ends to the inner member and provided withbuttons adapted to enter the holes of the outer member.
CHARLES W. BARNES.
