JOSEPH G, GOULT, SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
Letters Patent No. 7.7,592, dated Jlfay 5, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT 1N IrUNNAoEs AND coaorNsnns roe COLLECTING QUIOKSILVER.
TO ALL 'IO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH O. COULT, of the city and county of San Francisco, and State'of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Mode of Constructing my Furnace and Condensers, for which two Letters Patent of, the United States have been granted to me, for the reduction of quicksilver and other ores, andvolatilo substances, concentrating the volatile substances in the condensing-chambers by amalgamation; and I do hereby declare that the'following is a full description of my improved invention, reference being bad. to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, the annexed drawings making a part of this specification. I
I Figure 1 represents the frame of the furnace, which is constructed as in the drawings represented. B B, the two fire-chambers; G G, the two ore-chambers; I), the vapor-chamber. I use, instead of the waterlinings ff, or in connection therewith, which divide the compartments of the furnace, the gratings d d, shown at fig. land Figure 3, todivide the compartmentsthrough which the fire passes, fr,onrthe chambers 13 B, into and through the cross-section of the ore in the chambers C C, andout into the vapor-chambcr D.
i Underneath, and attached to the'vapor-chamber, is the vapor-pipe O, which is'connected to the condensing. chambers H H H, all of which is made of orlined on the inside with plates of copper, silver, or any other material that can be'coated with quicksilver. I also place in thespaee or opening of the condensing-chamber,
through which the fumes pass,'a series of punched copper, silver, or plate, madc of any other material that will or can be coated with quicksilver, a a a a a, placcdone above the other, leaving a space between the plates,
to let the fumes circulate, in such a manner that when the fumes pass through the holes in the plate, Figure 4,.
below, they must come in contact with the rolled part of the plate above, (see dotted lines a a a a, also fig. 4.) All the plates on the inside of the condenser being first coated with quicksilver, readilytake up'and amalgamate all the fine vapors of quicksilver that would otherwise pass through and probably be lost, all substantially as described and for the purposes set forth.
What Iclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The arrangement of the panes d d d in the ore-chambers O 0, instead of the vapor-chamber D.
2. The arrangement of the grating 01 d, placed on the inside of the ore-chambers C C, to be used with or without the water-liningsff, as may be desired; as and for the purposes set forth.
3. The arrangement of making or lining the inside of the condensing-opening or pipes II II II, with copper, silver, or other material that can be coated with quicksilver, as and for the purposes set forth. I
4. The arrangement of placing in any part ofthe condensing-openings II II II, leading from the furnace I to the final escape into the open air, a series-of punched copper, silver, or plate, made of other material, that will or can be coated with quicksilver, for the purpose of amalgamating the fumes of mercury thereto, and saving all that would otherwise escape, as and for thopurposes'set forth,
