COLUMBIA J EWV ELRY COMPANY, OF NORTH CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHU- SETTS, A COPARTNERSHIP.
FRAME FOR BAGS, 8w.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 755,085, dated March 22, 1904.
Application filed January 18, 1904. Serial No. 189,410. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FELIX VIANo, a subject of the King of Italy, residing at West Somerville, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Frames for Bags, &c., of which the.
following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention has for its object the production of a novel bag-frame recessed at its under side for the reception of and to conceal the upper end of the bag and bag-carrier to which the bag is attached. One corner of the closed upper end of the frame has hinged to it a lid or cover that may be opened to gain entrance to the bag. 7 I
Figure 1 is aperspective view of abag-frame and bag embodying my invention, the lid or cover being open. Fig. 2 shows a cross-section of the frame and ring. Fig. 3 is an under side view of the frame-head and part of the bag-holder. ,Fig. 4 shows part of the bagframe detached to illustrate the hinge-cavity, and Fig. 5 showspart of the ring-band and part of a bag to show how it is attached.
Referring to the drawings, the bag a is shown as connected by a thread a in holes a of a flange of a bag-holder (L The frame of the bag comprises a channeled ring presenting two circular flanges b I), connected by a web 6 the upper end of which is herein represented as flat and in practice of a width about a quarter of an inch.
After securing the bag to the bag-holder the latter is slipped upwardly over the de pending ring-shaped flange b of the tram e", the fit being sufliciently close to enable the ringshaped bag-holder to be retained in such posi' tion against all usual strains; but, if desired, a
tool may be rubbed around against the edge' of said flange and slightly expand the same to thereby confine the holder and bag securely in working position.
Viewing Fig. 3, showing an under side view of the bag-frame, 0 represents a spring having a projecting point 0 and near said point a finger-piece 0 The point and the fingerpiece are extended outwardly through holes in the outer dependingflange Z) of the frame.
The ring-shaped channel-bar bent to form the head is cut transversely at two points d, the cutscrossing the outer circular edge of the frame, and a portion of the'metal between said cuts is struck or bent inwardly to leave a space d, and then two holes 03 are made in the metal, said holes intersecting the space 05. In the space cl I insert the bent ears or knuckles 6, extended from one edge of thelid or cover e and then insert a pintle 6' through said holes and through said ears. Prior to inserting the pintle as described I place between the cars a spring 0 is extended under and to contact with the lid or cover, and the other end is sustained by the head, so that when the fastening-lip f of the lid or cover is out of engagement with the prong 0 the spring acts normally to open the lid or cover.
When the lid or cover is closed, it is only necessary to enable the spring to open the lid or cover to press on the finger 0 connected with the spring.
It willbe observed when the lid or cover is open that the head presents a smooth top, from which depend rings or flanges, and that the bag-holding ring is concealed under .the top and between said flanges, thus making avery much neater bag than though the ring to which the bag was attached should be dropped into a groove, thus exposing the upper end of the bag and the ring, the bag or ring being held by prongs extending from the frame.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
l 1. Abag frame or head composed of a ring having two depending ring-shaped flanges, and a bag-holding ring inserted between said depending flanges and concealed by the top of the ring.
2. A bag frame or head composed of a ring having two depending flanges, and a bag-hold- One end of this spring ing ring inserted into the space between said flanges and held in place by contact with one of said flanges.
3. A bag frame or head composed of a ring having two depending flanges, and a bag-holding ring inserted into the space between said flanges and fitted to the inner depending flange. 4. A bag frame or head composed of metal bent to form a top, and two depending flanges, and a lid or cover hinged to the junction of said top and the outer depending flange.
5. A bag frame or head composed of metal presenting a top and two depending flanges,
part of the top and the exterior flange being slitted and depressed to form a recess and provided with pintle-holes, a lid having knuckles, and a pintle inserted through the pintle-holes and through the knuckles of the lid or cover.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two sub- 20 scribing witnesses.
FELIX VIANO.
