Description

No. 717,722. V PATENTED JAN. 6, 1903.

GARMENT SUPPORTER.
APPLIGATION FILED JAN. 30, 1902.
H0 MODEL.
UNETED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH G. STRIOKLAND, OF CLEARFIELD, PENNSYLVANIA.
G ARM ENT-SUPPORTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 717,722, dated January 6, 1903.
Application filed January at, 1902. Serial No. 91,914. on model.)
To ctZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Josnrn C. STRIGKLAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Clear-field, in the county of Clearfield and State of Pennsylvania, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements in Garment- Supporters; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the 'ac; companyingdrawings, audto the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and usefulimprovements in clasps or garment-supporting devices which are adapted to be clamped to the upper edge of a garment, thus dispensiug with buttons and providing a means for supporting trousers, &(3., which may be easily and quickly adjusted to the garment and removed therefrom.
The invention relates, further,in connection with the clamping-jaws adapted to engage the garment, of means for locking the jaws in clamping positions and for holding the jaws locked to the garment by a detachable strap, which is adapted to be held to a pair of susponders.
More specifically, the invention consists in the provisiou of two jaws whichare pivoted together, one end-of'one jawform a spring adapted to bear against the other jaw to hold the jaws open when alock ing device is released, and in the provision of a ring or loop which draws the spring-actuated jaw into a clamping position'as said ring or loop is drawn into a position to engage in a hooked end of the spring-pressed jaw, thus securely holding the jaws in clamping positions.
The invention will be hereinafter more fully described, and'specifically defined in the appended claims, and is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this application, and in which drawings similar letters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, in which Figure 1 is a perspective View of my invention shown as applied to the edge of a garment, the latter being shown in dotted outbeing bent to i has three edges line. Fig. 2 is a vertical central sectional view of the device, showing the jaws open. Fig. 3 is a vertical central sectional view showing the jaws held together or in a locked relation, Fig. 4 is a detail view in perspective of one of the jaws. Fig. 5 is a detail view of the other jaw.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates one of the clam ping-jaws, made, preferably, of flexible metal and having a series of upset spurs A on its inner face to provide a secure hold on the garment to which thQ. jaw is to be clamped. The upper end ot'sai djaw is preferably recessed, forming two flexible arms B and C, which are of substantially inverted-U shape, and which have their ends curved outward from the face of the jaw,.as at B and C, respectively. Ears D are formed on the edges of said jaw A, which are apertured to receive a pin E, on which the ears Fare pivotally mounted. Said ears F are formed on the edges of the jaw H, which jaw is pro vided with upset spurs H on its inner face, as shown, and has its upper portion contracted, as at K, with its extreme upper end bent to form a hook K, in which hook the ring or loop N is designed to engage when the two jaws are held in clamping positions, in which positions said ring or loop N engages the hooked end K of jaw H as well as the bent or hook-shaped portions of the flexible arms B and O, as clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The cover-plate H h bent over the edges of the jawH and is held to the latter. It will be observed that when the two jaws are pivotally mounted on the pin E the outwardly-curved portion M, which connects the arms B and C, is held against the inner face of the contracted portion K of the jaw H, as shown in Figs. 2 andS, and normally in the position shown in Fig.2 hold the jaws open. When the loop N, whichis passedunderneath thecontractedportion K ofjaw H and the arms B and C, is pulled toward the hook K and thebent portions of arms 13 and G, the two jaws will be thrown toward each other. After the loop N passes by the bulging portion and enters the hooked end K the bulging portion will spring to ward the inner face of the jaw A and serve to lock the loop in the position shown in Figs. 1' and 3. A strap P is designed to be passed ICO over the bulging portion into the position shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, in which case it would not be necessary todetach the strap, as the clamping members could be removed with the suspenders.
From the foregoing it will be observed that Iproduce a simple and inexpensive device as a substitute for buttons and to which suspenders may be easily connected and disconnected, and the clamping jaws may be quickly and easily applied and adjusted at different locations to the edge of a garment.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A garment-supporter, comprising two 2. A garment-supporting device comprising two clamping-jaws A and H, pivoted together, said jaw H having a contracted portion, the end of which is bent to form ahook, one of said jaws having a recessed portion with flexible arms bent upon themselves, with their outwardly-bent ends held yieldingly against the inner face of the second jaw, a loop passed under the bent arms B and O of jaw A and the contracted portion K of jaw H and adapted to draw the clampingjaws together and hold same in locked relations, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH C. STRIOKLAND.
