Description

Patented Fab. 4 I902.
0. R. BAIBD.
GLOVE.
(Application filed. Nov. 23, 1900.)
(No Model.)
lgvegton UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ORLEY R. BAIRD, OF MENDON, MICHIGAN.
GLOVE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 692,224, dated February 4, '1 902. Application filed November 23, 1900. Serial No. 37,531. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, ORLEY R. BAIRD, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Mendon, in the county of St. Joseph and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gloves, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in gloves.
The objects of the invention are, first,t0 provide a glove in which all objectionable-seams are entirely eliminated from the palm and insides of the fingers, there being only a concealed seam across the front of the base of the second and third fingers, which does not cause a ridge, and, second, to provide an improved glove in which the number of seams is reduced to the minimum, thereby facilitating the manufacture of the same and reducing the expense.
Further objects will definitely appear in the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish these objects of my invention by the devices and means described in this specification.
The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A glove and the blanks from which it is formed are fully illustrated in the accompanying drawings, formingapart of this specification, in which-- Figure l is a view of my improved glove from the palm side. Fig. 2 is a view of the back side of the same. Fig. 3 is a view of the palm-blank of the same, in connection with which are formed the blanks for the forefinger, the thumb, and front portion of the little finger. Fig. at is a view of the blank for the back of the glove, which has formed in connection therewith the hacks for the second, third, and little finger. Figs. 5 and 6 show the blanks for the second and third fingers, respectively.
In the drawings similar letters of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the lettered parts of the drawings, A is the hand portion of the glove, the blank for which appears in Fig. 3. Above and to one side of the blank A is an extended portion a, which forms the front and sides of the little finger. The part b is the blank for the forefinger and extends from the upper opposite corner from the blank 0, the parts being formed so that it folds entirely around the forefinger, which is completed by a seam over the end of the same and down the back inner side of the finger, the entire forefinger thus being formed in a single piece. The extension at is the blank for the thumb, which is separated by a gash from the forefinger, as appears in Fig. 3. The tip of the blank is formed by a central scallop and half-scallops at each side. WVhen the thumb-blank is folded and its edges stitched together, a single row of stitches down the back of the thumb completes the same. The thumb thus sewed together is folded upwardly and forwardly into proper position in the glove. The finger-blanks for the second and third fingers are inserted between the forefinger b and the blank 0. The back B, with the finger extensions efg, is then put in place and stitched. An angular portion extending out across the back of the forefinger into the angle at the base of the thumb forms, in connection with the palm-blank, a straight seam from the base of the thumb to the wrist, the wrist E being preferably made of a separate band of leather. A gore or gusset F is usually inserted to give the necessary size to the wrist, although this could be formed on one or the other of the blanks A B, and the wrist Emight be formed in connection with one or the other of the blanks A B, though I prefer to make it of a separate piece.
A glove formed in this way, it will be observed, has no seam in the palm or on the front portions of the fingers at all Where they are liable to wear or by forming ridges to irritate the hand of the wearer. As the stitches of the seams are not exposed to wear, the gloves do not rip, and hence are verydura= ble. Thus the comfort and durability of the glove are greatly enhanced by this peculiar construction. With this peculiar construction also it'will be observed that there is but a single seam on the forefinger of the glove, thus reducing the amount of stitching re quired to the minimum, and, as before remarked, the stitching is not exposed to wear. There is also only a single row of stitching on the back of the thumb, and owing to the peculiar form of the blank the row of stitching construction of gloves.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A glove made up of a hand-blank Ahaving a thumb portion a, cut with an integral front portion with extensions at each side for seam at the back, a front-finger portion b and a little-finger portion 0 formed integral therewith, there being a gash between the thumb portion and the forefinger and a space for the second and third fingers between the portions 0, b; the portions 0, D, for the second and third fingers secured to the hand-blank A;
aback portion B with backs e, f, and g, for the second, third and fourth fingers and a portion to extend across the back of the hand with an extension fitted into the base of the thumb at the back whereby seams on the palm and the front of the thumb are avoided; a wrist portion E; and a gusset F as described. 2. A glove made up of a hand-blank A having a thumb portion a, cut with an integral front portion'with extensions at each side for seam at the back, a front-finger portion 1) and a little-finger portion 0 formed integral therewith, there being a gash between the thumb portion and the forefinger and a space for the second and third fingers between the portions 0, b; the portions 0, D, for the second and third fingers secured to the hand-blank A; a back'portion B with backs e, f, and g, for the second, third and fourth fingers and a portion to extend across the back of the hand with an extension fitted into the base of the thumb at the back whereby seams on the palm and the front of the thumb are avoided; a wrist portion E as described.
3. A glove made up of a hand-blank A having a thumb portion a, cut with an integral front portion with extensions at each side for seam at the back, a front-fingerportion b, and a little-finger portion 0 formed integral therewith, there being a gash between the thumb portion and the forefinger, and a space for the second and third fingers between the portions o, I); the portions 0, D, for the second and third fingers secured to the hand-blank A; and a back portion B, with backs e, f, and g, for the second, third, and fourth fingers, and a portion to extend across the back of the hand with an extension fitted into the base of the thumb at the back whereby seams on the palm and the front of the thumb are avoided, as
described.
4:. Aglove made up of a hand-blank portion A having a thumb portion a, cut with an integral front portion with extensions at each side for seam at the back, a forefinger portion 19, and a little-finger portion 0, formed integral therewith; a gash extending between the portions 0, and b; blanks for the fingers; and the back having a portion to extend across the base of the forefinger. and form the base of the thumb at the back whereby seams on the palm and the front of the thumb are avoided, as specified.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of two witnesses.
