UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE..
WILLIAM w. DEAN, OE CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOE To THE kELLoee SWITCH BOARD AND SUPPLY COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
PLUG AND SOCKET FOR TELEPHONE SYSTEMS.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent N o. 657,339, dated September 4, 1900.
Application nea April 2s, 1899. Santino. 714,872. Nomodei.)
To all whom t may concern:
Bc it known that I, WILLIAM W. DEAN, a Citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Plugs and Sockets for Telephone Systems, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being hadto the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to a plug and socket for telephone systems, my object being to provide an improved form of socket or springjack switch for the terminals of the telephoneline, and also to provide an improved form of connecting-plug for insertion therein when it is desired to connect 'the telephone-lines for con versation.
I have illustrated my invention in the accom panying drawings, inu which- Figure l is a sectional view illustrating the plug inserted in the socket. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on line 2 2, Fig. 1.
Like letters refer to like parts in both figures.
The socket comprises a part a, having an opening through which the plug may be inserted and is also provided with a line-spring b, the end of which is arranged to engage a contact upon the plug and also carries a rigid or infiexible contact o. The plug comprises an insulating-sleeve d to serve as a handle, within which is arranged a metallic shell d', the forward end of which in the present instance serves as a terminal of the plug and is adapted when the plug is inserted in the socket to rest within and make contact with the metallic part or sleeve a, having the opening for the reception of the plug. Within the metallic shell d is an insulating-shell d2, and within the latter is a conducting-shell d3, the outer end of whichis enlarged to form the terminal d4, with' which the end of line-spring b is adapted to engage and make Contact. Within the shell d3 is an insulating-body d, through which` passes a rod d5. of conducting material, the forward end of the rod extending beyond the body of insulating material d8 and constituting a spring-terminal adapted to engage the rigid contact c. The end d of the rod d5 is enlarged and is adapted to engage a lateral extension c on the rigid contact to insure the making of an effective contact and to hold the plug in place. A recess or opening dT is provided in the forward end of the insulating-body ds'to aiford space to permit the lateral flexing of contact-rod d5.
When the plug is inserted in the springjack, the engagement of the cylindrical portion of the plug with the Opening through the part a serves to hold the plug in proper position and the line-spring b engages the terminal d4 of the plug, while the spring-tip b5 of thet plug engages the rigid contact c of the spring-jack, the `enlarged end of the springterminal and the lateral extension on the rigid contact serving to effectively hold the plug in position.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In com bination,a telephone switch-socket having an opening for the insertion of the plug and provided with a central rigid terminal and a spring-terminal at one side thereof, and a plug having a portion to rest Within the socket-opening and carrying a central spring rod or terminal to engage the rigid switch- Contact and an outer terminal to engage the spring-contact of the switch, substantially as described.
2. In combination,a telephone switch-socket having a spring-contact and a rigid central Contact having a lateral extension on lthe end, and a plug having a contact to engage said spring-contact and a spring rod or terminal havinga lateral extension on the end and adapted to engage said rigid contact, substantially as described.
Inwitness whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witmesses.
WILLIAM W. DEAN.
