SYRINGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 650,080, dated May 22, 1906. Application filed March 10, 1900. Serial No. 8,194. (No model.)
To alt whom it may concern.-
- Be it known that 1, JOHN SuMARMADUKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marshall, in the county of Salineand State of Mis-.
souri, have invented a new and useful Syringe,
of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a vaginal syringe; and the object of the same is to produce a deviceof this character having a simple outward application and introduction and apositive operation by effecting a thorough exterior occlusion and a painless non-irritating contraction of the labia with obvious advantageous results, and prevent soiling garments or adjacent articles at the time the injection of the fluid is progressing.
The invention consists in the construction and arrangement of the several parts, more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of an injection apparatus embodying the improved syringe. Fig. 2 is a transverse Vertical section of the occluding-head of the syringe. Fig. 3 is a similar view of the head shown in a difierent position. Fig. 4 isa sectional perspective View of a part of the head.
Similar numerals of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
The numeral 1 designates a water-bag or pose of substitution of other analogous devices having different characteristics and irrigating properties and as may be required under varying conditions and treatments.
' The essential feature of the invention, however, resides in the occluding-head 5, which is of substantially-elliptical form and comprises two semi-elliptical sections 6 and 7, connected at opposite extremities by simple hinges 8, preferably interlocking eyes, which are loose enough to permit movement or adjustment of the sections in applying the improved device. Each section has a rigid back 9, preferably formed of vulcanized rubber,
and on the front of each back a soft-rubber cushion 10 is secured and has a longitudinal groove or concave channel 11 following the outer edge contour of the said cushion and providing an edge rirn 12,'standing outwardly from the plane of the section and producing means at opposite sides of the complete head to fit over and softly embrace the labia adjacent the vaginal orifice or month. Each section also has an inner protuberance or convex swell 13, into which the groove or channel merges, and the contiguous protuberances orswells of the complete head serve as means for closing the vaginal orifice. Through the central portion of each section a semicircular opening 14 is formed, said openings conjointly forming a close passage for the injector or nozzle-tip 4, and secured at one edge to the section 6 is an elastic or thin rubber fiap 15, which loosely extends over the protuberances or swetls of both sections and is provided with an opening 16 to aline with the combined semicircular openings 14. Another thin rubber flap 17 has its one edge secured to the other section 7 on the inner portion of the rim 12 thereof and loosely extends over the flap 15 and a part of the section 6 beyond the terminal of the latter. The flap 17 is also formed with a central opening 18 to aline with those in the flap 15 and the sections, and both flaps are employed toprovide a water-tight seal and prevent leakage around the injector or nozzle tip 4 and through the joint between the sections, the one flap being slightly thicker than the other to form an effective tight binding around the nozzle-tip and also to soften the bearing-face of the head next to the organ treated.
The injector or nozzle-ti p 4 has a plurality of openings therein located at difierent points and when disposed in the head care will be taken to obtain a suflicient projection to suit the organ to be treated and to properly locate the occluding-head on the same at such a distance that it will bear against the orifice or mouth of the vagina. The labia are then drawn together by contracting the sections 6 and 7 ofthe head, as shown by Fig. 3, and the liquid, either medicated or clear water, is permitted to flow through the injector or nozzle-tip and thoroughly irrigate or treat the organ without liability of leakage. During such operationthe head-sections are firmly held inhplace-and the contraction of thelahia maintained, and after such treatment the head and injector are withdrawn and the liquid in the vagina will flow into a receptacle disposed in proper position for this purpose. a r 7 To accommodate different applications, changes in the-form, proportions, and minor IO details may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the salient features ofthe: invention, 7
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is- 1. In a device of the character set forth, thefcombination with a source .of supplyand aifeelding-tube, of an injector or nozzle-tip removably applied to'the said: tube; and: an,
occludinghead fitted-over the injector or n'oz-' zle-tipand comprising 'two hinged sections;
2.; In" a=deviceiof the character set forth, the combination with an injector and; means for feeding: the same, of an occluding headcomprisingtwo hinged sections having yield- 7 ing bearing-faces.
- 3.- In: a device of the character setforth,
, thercombination with'aninjector or nozzle:- tip and: feeding; means therefor, of an occludinghead comprising hinged sections with cushioned bearing-faces having; edge rims outstandingtherefrom, concaved grooves following-said rims and central protuberances or swells, the said head having an opening therethrough forthe reception of the injector or nozzle-tip.
4:. In a device of the character set forth, the combination with an injector or nozzletip'and means for feeding the same, of an cecluding-head having an openin g therethrough for-the reception of said; injector or nozzletip, said head comprising hinged sections each of which has an elastic flap attached thereto and extending over the other to provide a liquid-tight joint, the said flaps also having openings therein for thepassage of the injector or nozzle-tip.
5; Anoccluding head for a syringe comprising semi-elliptical sections movably attached to each other'and having anopening-L therethrough at the center, i each sectionbeing formed with a'stiffback and acus'hioned bearing-facew-ith anoutstanding rim,aa1concave groove orchannel andtaninnerhprotib bera-nce', and yielding flaps conne'cted at one end to each ofthe. sections and extending across the bearing-face ,of; thelatter and also having openingstherein to aline withth'ercentral openingin theihead.
In testimony that-I claim theforegoingas my own I have hereto affixed mysignature in thepresence of two witnesses:
