' of the United States, residing at 2248 Shenancloah avenue, in the city of St.. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Street-Railway-Switch-O perating4 Device, of
which the following isa specification.
HlMy invention relates to improvements in railway switch operatin g devices in which hetween two longitudinal Lails, with a platerail on top in the midway ofthe main track,
Vertically-reciprocating and simultaneouslymoving levers operate, in conjunction with a switch-tongue, a mechanism attached to the platform of a car for the operating purpose;
"Sand the objects of my improvements are, first,
to provide a regulating apparatus to open or ,close a switch for either sideof the track; second, to affor facilities in putting a switch in any desired position from a platform of a car while the latter is in' motion, and, third, to
avoid obstructive mechanisml above the sur# face ,of the street. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the. accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical side view of the mechanism attached t'o the platform of a car, showing the combinations with the little wheels, one in a inoperative and the other in an operative position Fig. 2, a top view of the switch and the regulating apparatus as they appear after'the removal of the plate-rail; Fig. 3,a side view-,of the vertical section of apart of the regulating apparatus as it appearsafter the removal of one rail; Figl ai, a top view of a section of a part of the plate-rail, showing thev surace of the extending part of the levers.

The three-armed rocker-lever 3, previously referred to and shown in Fig. 8, with its downward arm, is connected with rod 12, whichis forwardly at a predetermined distance hooked in a bell-crank lever 13, and the latter is ful crumed on a vertical axle 11, which is prol,vided with a nntlG on top and secured to a A'sle`ep'er71- with head-screws 15 15.
Said le`- ver 13 is connected by a-rod 19 to a har 21, and the latter is secured to a switch-tongue with a pin 30,` as shown in Fig. G.
The hangers 46, 47, and 48 and the two hanging rods 85 and 36, in connection with a forked bar 41, secured at-its upper end to the hanger 46 and at its two lower ends to the I O'O said hanging rods and 36, constitute the framework of the attachment to the platform of a car for the operating purpose. The said rods 35 and 36 hold a shaft 3S, which is provided with a nut 37 on each end, carrying two arms 33 and 34, to which are attached the wheels`31 and 32. Said arms 33 and 34 are pivotally connected with the rods 39 and 40 and the latter to the upper arms 42 and 45, comprising two shafts 43 and 44, which are journaled in the two hangers 46 and 47. In-
wardly of the said hanger 46 the said arn142 is secured to the said shaft 43, and to the latter outside of the hanger 47 is secured the arm 49, and said arms 42 and 49 are in dlrection to each other at a right angle, and the arm 50 is secured to the said shaft 44 inwardly ofthe said hanger 47 and the said arm 45 is secured to the said shaft 44 outside of the said hanger 4G, and said arms 45 and 50 are in direction to each other at a right angie. Forwardly the shaft 7 O is'held secure by the said hanger 48, and said shaft is carrying the two bell-crank levers 53 and 54, which are pivotally connected with the rods 51 and52 and the latter with the said arms 49 and 50. Thefoot- posts 57 and 58 vertically pass through lugs GO, which are attached to the platform of a car, and said foot- posts 57 and 58 are `pivotally connected by links 55 and 56 to the Asaid bell-crank levers 53 and 54.
The suspension-springs 63 and 64 are hooked i at the front to eye-heads 61 and G2, which are fastened to the said rods 51 and 52, and
at the rearward ends said springs 63 and 64 are hooked in eyebolts 66, which are secured to the cross-piece-5.
The nnmerals 6 7," 68, and 60 are parts of a i street-car and its platform, showing the adjust-able attachment thereto. I prefer to' carry out this feature of my invention in the manner shown in Figs. 1 and 3, where it will be seen that two'foot-pes'ts57 and 58 rise vertically from the top of the platform of a carat the most convenient place of the same to op crate thereon. The foot-post 58, in connection with the little wheel 32, is' adapted to open a switchen either side of the track, and
the foot-post 57, iny connection with the little wheel 31, is adapted to close it on either side of the track. 'The suspension-springs 63 and 64 automatically bring the little wheels-when operative back vtotheir inoperative position.l
The said levers 1 and 2, with their slight .extension between the grooves 27 and 28,and their connection with the said bars 7"and 8, the links 5 and G and the said threearmed rocker-lever 3. Either one of the said levers 1 and 2 when depressed causes the said lever 3 at its depressing-arm to go down farther and those moving the said rod 12, in connection with a switch, forward or backward, corresponding to the-respective space required for a switch to bring it lfrom one side to the other.I Depressing one of the said levers land 2causes the other simultaneously to come u p,

2. In a switch-operating device, the combination comprising two Longitudinal. rails 17 and 18 with a plate-rail 1.1 secured on top, having two grooves on said plate-rail, two
vertically-reciprocating and siinultaneouslymoving levers 1 and 2, partially extendingr through the said grooves; having two independent combinations for operating the two said levers, of w-hich eaehbeing provided with a foot-post extending on the top of a platform of a car a connection with a bellcrank'lever by a link and said bell-crank lever lbeing' pivoted to a rod, which being attached to an arm secured to a shaft and on the other end of said shaft being secured to an arm at a rightanglc; 'and said arm having a lpivotal connection with a downwardhanging rod, which being pivoted at its lower end to an arm mounted at its forward end' on Ilo the sha-ft 38and at its-'other rend being provided witha little wheel, 'which when in an operative-position, passesgthrough the said g'rocveand depressing the :extension of said lever causing the switch-to change, substantially as described.'
