UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.

HOSE-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming'part of Letters Patent No. 643,358, dated February 13, 1900. Appiianon nea June 9,1899. seramos/19,964. (Nomads.)
.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MATTHEW J. KoNoLD,
Improvements in Hose-Couplers, of which' thefollowing is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings;
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in couplings or unions, and relates more particularly to that class of inventions known as hose-couplings.
The invention has for its object the provision of novel means whereby two sections of a hose may be easily coupled together, forming a perfectly-tight joint, and means whereby the two sections are locked together.
The invention further aims to construct a coupling of the above-referred-to class that will be extremely simple in its construction, strong, durable, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
The herein-described invention has for its still further object to dispense with the use of screw-threads and to construct a coupling that will permit the sections to be easily disconnected.
With the above and other objects in view the invention finally consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more particularly describedLand specifically pointed out in the claims.
In describing the invention in detail ref erence is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specilication, and wherein like figures of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views, in'- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved hose-coupler, showing the sections coupled together. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail View in perspective of the male member. Fig. 4 is a similar view of the female member. Fig. 5 is a top plan view of the male member as shown in Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is a detail view in perspective of the pawl.
In the drawings ythe reference-numeral 1 indicates the male member, which consists vinner face and periphery a set' of ratchet` teeth 4, being arranged directly opposite each other andextending radially in conformity with-the exterior of the'boss. Said boss carries a cone-shaped nipple 5, formed integral therewith, and arranged exteriorly thereon are inclined ridges 6. wailof the cone-shaped nipple 5 is formed into an, inverted-cone-shaped opening or mouth 7, fornilng a shoulder 8. I
The reference-numeral 9 indicates the female member, which consists of a tubular section, said section having exteriorly formed thereon at suitable intervals annular fianges 10, said section terminating in an enlarged portion 11, forming a. sleeve 12, having interiorly arranged. therein a V-shaped annular recess 13, forming an interior cone 14. Upon the cuter face and formed integral with the enlarged portion 11 are lugs 15,which extend in alinement with and beyond the mouth of the enlarged portion. At the point of eX- tension of the lugs and arranged in the inner faces are notches which constitute guides 16. One o f the said lugs 15 'forms a casing for the reception of a pawl 17, the lattery being substantially wedgeshaped. This pawl is provided with a shank 18, vthe face end of said shank being apertured, as shown at 19, and a split ring 20, which is adapted to be inserted through the aperture of the shank.
The reference numeral 21 represents a The interior spiral spring surrounding the shank ofthe pawl.
The operation of my improved coupling is as follows: The section carrying the male member is inserted into the section carrying the female member of the coupling. The end of the inclined ridge 6 of the male member being brought into engagement with the guide 16 of the female member, by a partial turn of the latter the guides will ride on the inclined ridges, thus drawing both sections closer together and wedging the cone-shaped nipple 5 of the male member into the V-shaped annular recess 13 of the female member. Simultaneously with this operation the spring IOO pressed pawl 1'7 engages the ratchet-teeth,
which constitute effectual locking means When it is desired to uncouple the sections, a spanner may be applied to the lugs 15, the spring-pressed pawl withdrawn from engagement with the ratchet-teeth, and by a partial turn of the female member te a point where the disengagement of the guides from the ridges takes place the sections will then be released.
The annular ianges 2 and 10, formed upon the male and female members, respectively, serve to retain the exible hose.
It will be 4observed that by the use of this improved coupling two sections may be coupled or uncoupled in an instant, thus affording a s ecial advantage when applied to the hose o ire'departments.
From the foregoing description the many advantages derived by this invention will be readily apparent.
lt will be noted that various changes may be made in the details of construction Without departing from the general spirit of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is=
1. A coupling of the character described comprising a male'and female member, a boss arranged on said male member carrying ratchetteeth, a coneshaped nipple formed on said boss, inclined ridges arranged on said cone-shaped nipple, said female member carrying a sleeve having a tl-shaped annular re'- cess, a cone arranged in-said sleeve, lugs secured to the exterior of said sleeve, guides arranged in said lugs and aspiring-actuated pawl suitably secured in one of said lugs, substantially as described.; i
2. A coupling of the character described,
comprising a male and female member, a boss arranged on said male member, a set of ratchet-teeth arranged on said boss, a coneshaped nipple formed on said boss, inclined ridges arranged on said cone-shaped nipple, said female member carrying a sleeve having formed therein a V-shaped recessa cone arranged in said sleeve, lugs secured to the exterior lof said sleeve, guides arranged in said lugs, a spring-actuated pawl arranged in one of said lugs, a split ring secured to the end of said pawl, and a series of annular flanges .arranged on the said male and female mem'- bers, all parts being arranged and operating substantially as herein shown' and described.
3. A coupling of the character described, comprising a male and female member, a boss arranged on said male member, a cone-shaped nipple arranged on said boss, said female member carrying a sleeve having a V-shaped annular recess, a cone arranged in said sleeve, annular flanges arranged on said male andl female members, and suitable locking means, substantially as described.
4. A coupling of the character described,
comprising a male and female member, a boss arranged on said male member,- a double series of ratchet-teeth arranged on the inner face of said boss, one series of teeth opposite the other, a cone-.shaped nipple formed integral with the said boss, a sleeve mounted on the said female member, a cone arranged in said sleeve and surrounded by a ll-shaped recess to receive the said nipple, guides formed integral with ythe said sleeve, means connected to the said nipple adapted to be' engaged by the said guides for securing the said members together, peripheral flanges formed integral with` the said members for securing a hose-section thereto, and means adapted to engage the said ratchet-teeth for preventing the turning of the said members, substantially as set forth.
1n testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
