PATENT OFFICE ANDREW HOLM, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
FOLDING wil-:TALV BED'.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No..634,1.10, dated Detober 3, 1 899.
Apbiicaion niet lien 21,1899.
To a/ZZ whom it mctypconcern.:
Beit known that I, ANDREW HOLM, a citizen of the United States, residing atV Chicago, in'v the county of Cook and State of.lllinois, have invented'certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Metal Beds; and I do de-v clare the following to bea full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as Will enable others skilled in the art to which itappertains to make and use the same. p
My present invention relates to improvements in folding beds, and more particularly to that class of which the Letters Patent Nef 624,493, granted to me on the 9th day of May, l899,may be taken as a type; and the object is to improve and simplify the construction therein set forth, yand-thereby increase the utility of the same. To this end the invention consistsin certain features of construction and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter more particularly described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings the samereference characters indicate the same parts,t Y
' post and in the same horizontal plane With of the invention. A
Fignrel is a side elevation of my improved folding metal bed as it appears set up for use. Fig. 2 shows the bed folded. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line 3 3.of Fig. 1. Fig.V 4 is a detail viewof one of the telescoping foot-posts. Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail view of one of the hinged post-joints. -Fig. 6 is a similar view of the interchangeable side rail.
` The head-piece 'consists of the rigid cornerposts 1 l' and a corresponding intermediate swivel-post 2. The horizontal parallel braces 3, 3,', and 32 extend from the solid sockets 12 ou the post 1 to the upper half-sections 4 of the hinged sockets a, fixed to the post 2, and the shorter braces 5, 5', and 52 extend from the solid sockets 13 on the post 1 to the lower half-sections 4', loosely encompassingthe post 2 and forming the opposite half of the socket of.. -This construction practically divides the head into two panels, of which the swivelep'os't 2 is the dividing-line, and it' permits of one panel being folded back upon the other panel to reduce the size for-storage, transportation, and the like. l
The foot is formed in a somewhatsimilar manner, except that the posts are formed in two sections consisting of thefrigid posts Al Serial No. 713,828. (No model.)
termediate post A of the foot-piece is formed with. a notch A to receive the bentend of the spring-*pawl B', iixed on the telescopic g sleeve B to limit the upward movement of the telescoping section when ithas beeuJa-ised to the same height as the head-piece, so that both head and foot piece will present a'nniform appearance when the bed is folded.
6 denotes the bed-bottom frame, which is provided with the longitudinally-aimed trunnions 7 7,'jonrna1ed in the sockets 8 8 to permit the bottom being turnedV n p vertically and the head and foot pieceswfolded in'parallel therewith, as shown in Fig. 2.
9,9 denote the sockets, whiclrare formed with the lateral arms 10 10 to support the front edge of the bottom when horizontal.
12 denotes the single back or side rail, the opposite ends of which are provided with the lateral tongues 13 13, which are removablysecured in the sockets 14 by the set-screws 15. These sockets 14 14 are rigidly fixed to the head-post 1' and tothe corresponding footthe sockets 1Q lO, which are secured to posts on the opposite end posts of the head andfoot pieces. This construction permits of the rail being 'removed and the head and foot p'ieces being reversed when' desired to lit any partic ulary place.
'1'6 denotes the stationary top of the bed when folded, and 17 the hinged cover, which is folded when the bed is in'use and is opened out to cover the upper edge of the mattress and present an ornamental appearance when the bed is folded.
18 denotes a curtain-pole concealed under the projecting dange of the top 16 'to receive asliding curtain and conceal the bed-bottom and springs.
AThe accompanying drawings show my invention in the best form now known to me; but many changes in the details might be' made within the skill of a 'goed mechanic without departingfrom the spirit of my invention as set forth in the claim at the end In a folding bed of the class described, the
and the telescoping sleeves B Ba, and the in- A f horizontally-folding foot-piece provided with a telescopic section; in combination Wit-h the my hand in presence of two subsorbingwthead-piece, and the side rails connecting said nesses. foot and head piecesand means for automateally limiting the upward movement of said Vituesses: telescopio section, substantially as and foll the A. W. FULTON,
purpose set forth.
