The feeler shown is composed, essentially,
of a rail mounted on arms of a rock-shaft having substantially stationary bearings located under and below the guide which sustains the stringer-bars carrying the drop devices. The rock-shaft has an extended arm provided with a projection or pin which is engaged by an initiatory device to be described. The feeler is made movable to and fro underneath said guide and across the path of the drop devices;
The feeler has imparted to it a to-and-fro movement by or through an initiatory device, represented as a lever mounted upon a stud carried by an actuator,which may be a rockerarm, said rocker-arm being pivoted at a point above the lower ends of the drop devices when in their normal position and substantially be tween the upper ends of the two rows of drop devices, and the upper end of the initiatory device stands when in its normal position substantially in line with the center of the pivot or stud supporting the initiatory device. The upper end of the initiatory device has joined with it a rod or device, whereby said initiatory device automatically determines by its position on the actuator the position of a controller or device, which in its normal positionthe drop devices being in their normal position-is operated, but without any tend- K ency to release the shipper-handle and start the stop-motion devices; but said controller whenever a drop device descends into its abnormal position, so that it arrests the further movement of the feeler, is changed in its position that is, is moved in one or the other directionso that it engages and operates a shipperhandle disengaging device, (herein shown as an elbow-lever pivotally mounted upon the loom side,) the movement of said 1ever actingto release the shipper-handle from the usual notch in the usual holding-plate extended from one end of the loom at or near the end of the breast-beam. The lower end of the initiatory device is hereinshown as slotted to embrace a pin or projection extended from the arm referred to as fast on the rock-shaft carrying the feeler.
During the operation of the loom the actuator has imparted to it uniformly a to-and-fro movement by means of a cam or suitable device, and said actuator moves in unison with it the initiatory device, the latter serving to turn the feeler rock-shaft in its bearings and move the feeler to and fro under the drop devices in their normal position, and during such movement of the actuator and initiatory device in unison the initiatory device has no movement whatever on or with relation to the actuator. Whenever, however, a dropdevice descends into its abnormal position and is met by the moving feeler,the feeler is stopped, but the actuator continues to move, and as a result thereof the initiatory device has imparted to it for the first an independent or secondary movement on or with relation to the pivot about which it turns on the actuator, and the upper end of said initiatory device is moved in one or the other direction, that depending upon whether the feeler was arrested when moving forwardly toward the breast-beam or backwardly toward the rear end of the loom. In either instance this movement of the initiatory device upon its pivot, carried by the actuator, causes the controller to be moved, as herein stated, that it may for the first act to effect the release of the shipper-handle and stop the loom.
The initiatory device has cooperating with it positioning means which normallyserve to maintain the upper end of the initiatory device central with relation to the center of motion of the actuator.
Figure 1 of the drawings represents a sectional view from front to back of a loom having warp-stop devices, showing my invention in one form. Fig. 2 is a similar section, but with the lay forward and a drop device in its abnormal position, the feeler being shown as arrested and the controller put into a position to cause the release of the shipper-handle. Fig. 2 shows the upper end of the initiatory device and part of the rod 9, connected with and to be actuated by said device. Fig. 3 shows a right-hand view of the guide crossing the loom-frame and receiving the stringerbars carrying the drop devices, said figure showing the actuator and initiatory device carried thereby engaging a projection from the rock-shaft of the feeler. Fig. 4 is a detail broken out centrally, looking at the loom from the right-hand side of the dotted line 00, Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a detail showing the guide in cross-section,with one of the pieces carrying the stringer-bars connected thereto; and Fig. 6 is a detail looking at Fig. 5 in the direction of the arrow in that figure.
The loom-frame A, the layA, having a reed a, the breast-beam A the warp-beam A the crank-shaft A, the links A actuated there by and connected with the lay, the lay rockshaft A, the cam-shaft A having at one end a toothed gear A which meshes with a toothed gear A fast on the crank-shaft, the gear A having twice the number of teeth of the gear A, and the harness-frames a and a each having suitable heddles to receive the warps w to manipulate them in the formation of sheds, and the shipper-handle E are and may be all as usual in looms, and instead of the particular devices shown I may use anyother suitable equivalent devices.
The loom-frame has united to it by suitable bolts b-one near each side of the loom ears 1), extended from a casting 13, forming a guide, said guide being extended across the loom from side to side and presenting, as herein shown, parallel bars or surfaces at each upper edge to constitute warp-rests Z2 The drop devices a and c'each have a suitable slot to embrace a stringer-bar, as c c, and above said slots said drop devices have like warp-receiving eyes 0 through which are extended the warps, each set of drop devices receiving, as herein supposed, one-half of the number of warp threads. These stringer-bars c and c are represented as fixed to like cars 11 of two like end pieces 0 by a suitable stud or locking device a, said locking device extending through said ears and through holes in said stringer-bars, so that the stringer-bars and end pieces when connected together form a removable frame or carrier. The end pieces have projecting ears or shoulders 20, which enter suitable notches c, madelin the rests b so that said end pieces when applied in the space of the guide B bein application Serial No. 679,181, of April 29, y
The right-hand end of the guide 13 is shown as having extended from it a pivot 61, which receives the hub-like end (1 of the actuator D, it being shown as an elbow-shaped lever, to one end of which is attached, by a suitable bolt d (see Fig. 2,) a rod (Z in turn jointed to a lever (1 pivoted at d upon a suitable stand secured to the loom side. an attached roller or other stud d, which is kept in contact with a cam (1 fast on the shaft A, by means of a suit-able spring d said spring having its lower end connected in any suitable manner with astationary part of the loom-frame. The pivot (Z is extended from the end of the guide B at a point above the lower ends of the drop devices when in their normal position, and it occupies a position substantially central between the two rows of drop devices.
The actuator has a stud e, upon which is pivoted an initiatory device e, represented as a lever having its upper end 6 located substantially central with relation to the center of the pivot or stud d, while its lower end is represented as slotted at e to embrace a pin or projection 6 connected with an arm e, attached to the feeler rock-shaft e. The feeler rock-shaft 6, having arms a to which is attached the rail 6 takes its bearing in suitable ears e", depending from the lower end of the guide B.
The actuator is shown as retained upon the stud cl, as herein represented by a washer f, (see Fig. 6,) through which is extended ascrew f, said screw entering a threaded hole in the pivot or stud (Z.
The shipper-handle E is of usual construction, and when the loom is running regularly it is held in a slotted plate extended from the loom side in usual manner.
The loom side has pivoted upon it at g a lever 9 which forms a disengaging device, it normally acting at one end against the shipper-handle, the opposite end of said disen' gaging device having, as shown, two pins or projections 2 3 sufiiciently distant one from the other to allow the controller to work up and down between them. The controller g in the form in which I have herein chosen to show it consists of a rod jointed at g to an arm g extended from the lay near the rockshaft A thereof, said rod sliding in a guide g. This controller has jointed toita rod which in turn is connected at its opposite end at c with the upper end of the initiatory device.
The initiatory device is represented herein as provided with a surface or plate 72, with which cooperates a positioning device h, said positioning device being represented as provided with a shank 71?, extended through suit- The lever d has able ears, as'h of an arm h extended from the actuator, said shank being surrounded by a spring h which normally acts to keep the enlarged end of the positioning device in contact with the plate h, thereby retaining the upper end of the initiatory device substantially central wit-h relation to the center of the pivot 01.
The upper end of theinitiatory device may either have a stud extended from it or a hole made through it, and when the stud is used one end of the rod g mayhave an eye. to fit the stud, and in the other instance its end may be bent through the hole in the initiatory device or the connection may be made in any suitable manner.
The particular manner of uniting the rod g with the upper end of the initiatory device is not material.
Assuming that the loom is running regularly and the drop devices are in their normal position, they being sustained by the unbroken warp-threads, the actuator will be moved to and fro, and it may have one full rnovementduring each backward-and-forward or complete movement of the lay, and at such time the initiatory device engaging the projection 6 of the arm c of the rock-shaft carrying the feeler will move the feeler to and fro under the drop devices, and during such movement the initiatory device will have no movement imparted to it whatever on its stud 6, but will simply move to and fro in unison with the actuator, and consequently the rod g 'will not be moved at all and will hold the upper end of the controller 9 substantially in the position represented in Fig. 1, so that said controller as it is moved up and down by or through the movement of the lay will pass and not catch either of the pins or projections 2 3 of the disengaging device or lever g and conse quentl y the shipper-lever will not be released to set in motion the stopping mechanism, (not herein represented, but which may be of any form usually employed in looms to shift a belt from a fast to a loose pulley or to disengage a loose friction from a fast friction pulley.) Should, however, a drop device fall into its abnormal position, as represented in Fig. 2, said drop device will be met by the moving .feeler and the feeler will be arrested, and as the actuator continues its movement derived from the cam d the initiatory device through its connection with the then stationary stud e of the arm e of a rock-shaft 6 will be turned about the stud e of the actuator and will cause the upper end of the initiatory device to be moved into position eccentric with relation to the pivot d,.and such movement will put the upper end of the controller into position to meet the pin 3 of the lever or device g turning said lever or device as the lay moves into its forward position, causing the lever g to release the shipper-handle from its usual holding-plate and effect the stopping of the loom. If the feeler should be arrested by one of the dropdevices c instead of c, the feeler at such time moving on its backward stroke toward the breast-beam, then in such instance the upper end a of the initiatory device instead of being moved about its pivot e toward the breast-beam will be moved in the opposite direction, so that the upper end of the controller would in such case meet the projection 2 of the lever g rather than the projection 3, as before, and would turn the said lever and efiect the release of the shipper-handle to stop the loom. Herein it will be understood that an actuator having a to-and-fro uniform movement carries with it an initiatory device which is operatively connected with a projection extended from the rock-shaft of the feeler, and said initiatory device, so long as it moves in unison with the actuator, simply moves the feeler to and fro under the drop devices in their abnormal position; but should a drop device fall or come into its abnormal position then the initiatory device has an independent movement imparted to it on the actuator, and it is this movement of the initiatory de- -vice that effects, through suitable intermediate devices, the release of the shipper-handle.
I believe myself to be the first to employa movable actuator having pivotally mounted upon it an initiatory device which may be moved on the said actuator only when the feeler meets a drop device in its abnormal position, and therefore this invention is not limited or intended to be limited to the exact construction shown for the'initiatory device, although I have shown it in the simplest form known to me.
In another application, Serial No. 703,960, filed on the 31st day of January, 1899, I have shown a different form of initiatory device, it being represented as composed of a compound lever, the extra member of the compound lever performing substantially the function of the slot in the initiatory device herein shown; but the invention shown in said application is considered tributary to this present invention. v
The rod 9 the controller, and the lever g constitute one preferred form of intermediate connection between the initiatory'device particular devices I may employ any other devices which under the control of a similar rod g will when operated, due to an obstruction of the feeler-rail, effect the release of the shipper-handle-as, for instance, I might use devices common to said application.
The initiatory device is represented as a lever of the first order.
The controller may be moved to put it in one of its operative positions with the exertion of only a very limited amount of strain on the initiatory device, the extent of strain being insufticient to injure the drop devices; but instead of the particular immediate connection herein shown and referred to'I may employ any other usual or suitable daggerin connection with the stop-motion mechanism, said dagger or device being capable of being changed from its normal into its abnormal position whenever a warp-thread fails, the putting of the dagger in its abnormal position causing it thereafter to act with force to effect the release of the shipper-handle.
The controllerhereinbefore referred to acts very much as and it might be designated as a dagger.
I have shown the arm extended from the rock-shaft of the feeler as provided with a projection which enters a slot in the initiatory device; but this invention is not limited to the precise connection shown between the initiatory device and the said arm, and I consider as within the scope of my invention any loose connection between said initiatory device and said arm whereby the initiatory device may move the arm and feeler so long as the drop devices are in their normal position, and thereby the initiatory device will be moved about its pivot when the feeler meets a drop device in its abnormal position.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a warp stop-motion for looms, the following instrumentalities, viz: a shipper handle or device, a series of drop devices, a feeler having an arm or projection, an actuator, an initiatory device carried by said actuator and cooperating with the arm or projection of said feeler, means to move said actuator and said initiatory device in unison while the drop devices occupy their normal position, and a suitable intermediate connection between said initiatory device and said shipper-handle, whereby when a drop device occupies its abnormal position to arrest said feeler said initiatory device will have imparted to it a secondary motion to start said intermediate connection and efiect the release of the shipperhandle to stop the loom, substantially as described.
2. In a warpstop-motion for looms, the following instrumentalities, viz: a shipper-handle, a series of drop devices, a feeler-rail carried by a rock-shaft, means to support said rock-shaft, an actuator, an initiatory device carried by said actuator and operatively connected with the feeler rock-shaft, said initiatory device presenting a leverof the first order, means to move said actuator and initiatory device to and fro in unison, the initiatory device moving said feeler so long as the drop devices occupy their normal position, and a suitable intermediate connection between said initiatory device and said shipper-handle whereby the movement of a drop device into abnormal position to arrest the feelerrail causes said initiatory device to be moved and effect the release of the shipper-handle to stop the loom.
In a warp stop-motion for looms, the fol lowing instrumentalities, viz: a shipper-handle, a feeler, a series of drop devices, an actuator pivoted midway said drop devices, means to move said actuator to and fro, an initiatory device carried by and moving normally in unison with said actuator and operativelyengaged with said feeler, said initiatory device having its operative end located normall y substantially in line with the pivot about which the actuator turns, and suitable intermediate devices operatively joined with said initiatory device and located between it and said shipper-handle, whereby the arrest of the feeler by a drop device in abnormal position is made to impart a secondary movement to the initiatory device about its pivot carried by the actuating device, to elfect the stopping of the loom, substantially as described.
4. In a warp stop-motion for looms, thefollowing instrumentalities, viz: a shipper handle or device, a series of drop devices, a feeler, an actuator, operative] y joined with said feeler, bearings to support the rock-shaft carrying the feeler, means to move said actuator to and fro, an initiatory device carried by and movable in unison with said actuator and cooperating with and moving the feeler, said initiatory device having its operative end located normally substantially in line with the pivot about which the actuator turns, and suitable intermediate devices operatively joined with said initiatory device and intermediate it and the shipper-handle,whereby when a drop device arrests the movement of the feeler the initiatory device is turned upon the actuator to release the shipper-handle and stop the loom.
' 5. In a warp stopmotion for looms, a series of drop devices, a guide crossing the loomframe and presenting a series of warp-rests, fixed bearings, a rock-shaftmounted in said fixed bearings and having an attached feeler, combined with an actuator pivotally mounted at the end of said guide at a point above the lower ends of the drop devices in their normal position, an initiatory device carried by said actuator and in operative engagement with the feeler rock-shaft, and means to move said actuator to and fro to move the feeler back and forth under the drop devices in their normal position, substantially as described.
6. In a warp stop-motion for looms, a series of drop devices adapted to be maintained in their normal position by unbroken warps, a feeler, and means to support it, an actuator, an initiatory device pivoted thereon and in operative engagement with said feeler, a shipper handle or device, an intermediate connection controlled by one end of said initiatory device and adapted when the latter is moved to release the shipper-handle, and a positioning device cooperating with said initiatory device to retain its upper end in position central with relation to the axis of motion of the said actuator, whereby said initiatory device may be moved in unison with the actuator so long as the drop devices are in their normal position, substantially as described.
