Description

v Patented Nov. 22, I898.

No. 6I4,62l.
H A M M 0 G K (Application filed Sept. 15, 1898.)
(No Model.)
UNITED STATES ISAAC E. PALMER, OF MIDDLETOWVN, CONNECTICUT.
HAMMOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 614,621, dated November 22, 1898.
Application filed $eptembe1- 15,1898. Serial No. 691,001. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ISAAC E. PALMER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Middletown, in the county of Middlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hammocks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in hammocks; and it consists in a hammock bifurcated throughout a portion of its length.
A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a plan View of the hammock as it appears when strung for use. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section through the same, and Fig. 3 is an enlarged View in detail of the fastening at the foot end of the hammock.
The particular structure which I have chosen to illustrate myinvention has the body portion of the hammock bifurcated at its foot end and a foot-rest section arranged to hang beneath the opening between the branches of the bifurcated end to enable the occupant to rest in the hammock with one or both of the limbs extended along the natural curve of the body of the hammock or one or both of the limbs of the occupant to rest in a more or less depending position between the branches of the bifurcated end. I have also shown a spreader inserted in the hammock-body at the crotch of the bifurcated end, which, aside from its functions as a spreader, serves the purpose of preventing the body of the occupant from slipping toward the foot, and I have further shown the foot-rest section adjustable to hold the feet of the occupant more or less elevated at pleasure. The foot-rest section, with its adjustment and the spreader inserted at the crotch of the bifurcated end, are not, however, essential to my invention in its broadest sense.
A represents the body of the hammock; a a, the branches of the hammock; B, the groups of suspension-loops at the head end of the hammock; h b, the suspension-loops at the foot ends of the branches of the bifurcated end of the hammock; C, the groups of suspension-cords leading from the head end ofthe hammock to a stretcher-bar D, and thence to the point of suspension E, and c c,
the groups of suspension-cords leading from the foot ends of the branches of the bifurcated end of the hammock to a stretcher-bar d, and thence to the point of suspension E at the foot end.
The head end of the hammock is here shown provided, as is common, with a pillow F and a spreader f. Across the body of the hammock, at the apex of the crotch formed by the branches of the bifurcated end, a spreader G, preferably a flat strip of wood, is located. This spreader G, in addition to the functions already ascribed to itviz., those of holding the hammock spread open and preventing the body of the occupant slipping toward the foot-also assists in staying the branches a a from any tendency to rip apart at the crotch under strain to which the hammock may be subjected. The crotch may also be reinforced by a piece a tightly stitched or sewed in position.
The foot-rest section (denoted by H) is preferably fastened at one end to the under side of the body of the hammock near the crotch between the branches of the bifurcated end and leads thence underneath the opening between the branches of the bifurcated end toward the foot end of the hammock, where it may be suspended by means of suspensioncords h and a suspension-rope 7L from the suspension-ring E, which supports the foot end of the hammock proper.
In order to make the foot-rest adjustable toward and away from the under side of the hammock, I have provided the suspensionring E with a central tongue e, having an eye 6 in its head, so that a suspension-rope h may be passed through the eye 6 in the tongue 6, and thence around the shank of the tongue and underneath the part which passes through the eye, forming a binding-fastening, which may be readily loosened to raise or lower the foot-rest at pleasure.
The hereinabove structure is found in practice to provide for a great variety of changes in the position of the occupant of the hammock and consequent restfulness.
What I claim is 1. A hammock having its body bifurcated throughout a portion of its length, substantially as set forth.
2. A hammock having its body bifurcated justable foot-rest section secured to the hanimock below the opening between the branches of the bifurcated portion of the hammock, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed myname, in presence of two witnesses, this 3d day of Sep tember, 1898.
ISAAC E. PALMER. lVitnesses:
E. B. WETMORE, HENRY O. EDGERTON.
