\VILLIAM COLWELL, OF CHILLICOTIIE, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN CORN-SHELLERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 58.986, dated October 23, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM COLWELL, of Chillicothe, in the county of Peoria and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Oorn-Sheller; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact descrip tion thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in constructinga corn-sheller provided with a toothed cone, combined with a cleaning and elevating apparatus, so that the corn is shelled from the cob, and fanned or wiunowed and elevated to any suitable height for putting into sacks or Wagons.
' To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
Figure 1 is a top-plan view of my improved corn-sheller. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical sectional elevation of the same from the line X X.
Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.
A represents a frame, made of wood, of any suitable dimensions, and partiallyiucased with wood.
B is a cone, made of wood or metal, and provided with teeth, and secured to the perpendicular shaft 0, which has beat-in gs at the bottom on the bridge-tree I), and at the top in the cross-piece E.
F is the hopper, into which the ears of corn are fed when intended to be shelled. The inside of this popper, at the lower extremity, is made in form to correspond and fit over the cone. The inside of this cone is provided with ribs or bars that radiate from the center to the outside or circumference of the lower section of the hopper.
Upon the lower end of the shaft 0 is a beveled gear-wheel, G, which fits and meshes into a corresponding gear-wheel, H, which is secured and runs on the horizontal shaft I, which is provided with journals that run in suitable hearings in the frame A. Upon the outer end of this shaft I is a band-wheel, J, over which a belt, K, passes, and extends and works over the pulley L, which is located and secured upon the outer end of the fan-shaft M, which has bearings secured to the frame A. Upon this fan-shaft M are secured fans or wings N, which are incase-d in the drum 0.
Upon the opposite end of the shaft I from the band-wheel J is a small pulley, I, over which the belt Q passes, and extends and Works over the band-wheel R, which is secured to the elevator-shaft S, which is located and runs in the outer end of the casing of the frame A.
T are pulleys located inside of the frame, and run upon journals therein, over which the elevator-belts U U work.
V represents any suitable number of slots secured to the belts U U, for the purpose of carrying up the cobs after having passed through the sheller.
W is a deflecting-board, secured to the frame, and located immediately under the sheller, for the purpose of carrying the corn and cobs onto the elevator, where the corn is riddled through between the slats and the cobs carried off and deposited outside the machine.
A is the throat leading from the fan-drum out under and over the elevator, and through which the blast passes that winnows the grain as it falls from the deflecting-board \V onto the elevator and into the spout B from which it is discharged into any proper receptacle or elevated to any desired height.
This corn-sheller is simple, rapid, and per foot in its operation in all its parts in shelling, separating the corn from the cobs and winnowing it, at the same time making or preparing it ready for the market, and simply consists in putting corn on the cob into the hopper and applyingany of the \vellhnowu powers to the shaft 0. The whole machine is put in motion, and the ears of corn fall or settle down upon the cone B, when by the action of its teeth the grain is rapidly shelled from the cob, and both are carried down upon the deflecting-board \V, by which it is carried to the elevator, where by the action of the blast from the fan N the hulls are blown off and the cobs are carried out at the end of the machine, while the grain is riddled through the elevator and conducted by the deflectingboard G into the spout B, which conducts it into any proper receptacle.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
In combination with the cone B, shaft 0, and hopper I the fan N and elevator U, for the purposes and substantially as herein set forth.
