SPEGIFIGATION forming plamrt of Letters Patent N0. 532,569, dated J'anuary 15, 1895.
Application filed April 3,1894. Serial N0. 506,191. (N0 niodel.)
T0 all who m z't mooy concern:
Be it known that I, CHRISTOPHEA LEFFING- WELL, a resident 0f New York, in the eounty of New York and Sta-te of New York, have invented eertain new and useful Improvements in Writing-Tablets; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exaet description of -the invention, such as will enable othersskilled in the art to whieh it1 appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates t0 an improvement in writing tablets, the object of the invention being to provide simpla and efficient means w hereby a eontinuous sheet of paper can be readily moved over the tablet as it is used, and to so eonstruet the deviee that the paper ean be readily reversed and written upou 011 both sides, if desired.
A further objeet is to so construct a writing tablet having rolls for the recepti0n of a continuous sheet 0f paper, as 130 render it easy 130 remove and replace Ehe rolls.
With these objects in view the invention consis ts in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts as hereinaft ar Set forth and pointed 01113 in the clairqn.
In the accornpanying drawings: Figure 1 is a plan view. Figs. 2, 3, and 4 are sectional views. 4
A represents the body 0f my improved tab- 1et, whieh may be made 0f wood or metal, and at eaeh end isprov ided With ears 01' enlargemeuts a, b. When the deviee is made' of metal these ears or enlargements will preferably be made integral With the b0dy portion A.
The construetion of the devices at both ends of the device for supporting the rolls being the same, a deseription 0f one sei: Will suffice f01 both.
The ear or enlargement a is perforated fo1 the aecommodation of a journal bearing a having a recess a ab its inner end for the reception of one end of a roll a and in Order to retain said journal bearing in fixed position, it is provided with eolla.rs a-;a, adapted to lie parallel with th respective faces 0f said ear 01 enlargement a.
The ear or enlargement b is made with a perforation b, in which a, journal bearing c is adapted. to fit loosely, the inner end of said journal bearing being made wioh a recess c for the reception of the other am]. of the roll a and projecting from said inner end of the journal bearing is a Spur 0 adapted to enter a slot 0 in bhe end of the roll a 'Ihe outer end 0f the journal bem-ing 0 1fs made with a knob d, by means of which to 'turn it. A eateh e is pivotally connected ab 0110 end to the ear 01' enlargement b and at its other end, is ma 1e with a recess 6 adpted to reeeive a projection e 011 said ear 01 'enlargement, whereby said cateh Will be retained in position'. Between its ends the, catch is made with a slo f of a, diameter less thau that '0f the journal bearing c where the1a.tfer passes through the ear 01 enlargement b. The journal bea.ring c is made with a groove g int0 which the cateh is adapted to enter when the device is in use, am]. thus prevent the accidental escape of said journal bearing. The
eatch is also provided with a thm'nb piece e by means of whieh to operate in.
A concihuous strip of paper(either plain or ruled, as desired) will be fastened to the two wooden rolls a befre they are plaeed in position, and wound tightly 011 0ne 0f said rolls. The rolls will then b e placed in position, one ab each end of the deviee, one end of each roll entering the rigid journa.l bearings. The removable journal bearings c will then be plaeed in position t0 receive the other ends of the rolls, the spurs 0 entering the ends 0f said. rolls. The oatehes will then be adjusted to prevent the eseape of the removable journal bearings. ready for use.
After using as mach of tl1e exposed paper as desired, tl1e journal which engages the empty wooden roll will be turned, winding the.paper upon the same and. unwinding it from the other roll. When it is desired to refer 130 any thixig previously written, :it is merelynetzessary t0 Wind the paper on the roll from whieh it ha.d just been unwound, thus drawing the paper back until the desired point is reached.
It will be observed tl 1 at the paper is wound fromthe top of one roll 2'uad the bottom of the other. By this means, when one side of the paper has been filled, it is merely necessary to reverse the positiqns 0f the respeetive rolls a.nd the other side of the paper will be exposed ready fox use.
The tablet is then IOO eesses, said removable bearings having anuu- 15 lau grooves fonned therein, and latches pivoted t0 the body portion in position 120 enter the annular grooves whereby to 1oek said bearings in the ears orenlargements, substantially as set; forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed this speeification in the presauce of tw0 subscribing witnesses.
CIIRISTOPHEA LEFFINGWELL.
