INSOLE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 507,490, dated October 24, 1893.

Application led August 14, 1893. Serial No. 483,124. (No model.)

To aZZ whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, GASPERA GAMBINO, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia, have made certain new and useful Improvements in lnsoles; andl do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to supplementary soles or linings for the soles of shoes commonly calledfinsoles the object being to provide perfect cushioning for the foot thereon and also proper hygienic ventillation of the feet, the invention consisting of the details hereinafter fully described.

Figure 1 is a plan of the device with the top covering removed showing the interior arrangement of elements. Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2 2, Fig. 1, showing further the elements therein shown. Fig. 3 is a plan of the conical coil spring employed in this device.

In the figures, like reference characters are employed in the designation of corresponding elements of construction in all the views.

Top and bottom sections or parts of the casing as shown in Fig. 1, and lettered a in the drawings, are cut from this leather or analogous material, the shape and size of the shoe with which, or more properly in which, it is to be worn. Two correlatively shaped pieces of wire cloth b are cut and secured to the inner sides of the pieces a by sewing `or other suitable means. A strip c of thin leather is then sewed around the edge of the under piece a so as to project upwardly therefrom.

Springs d and e, are then set into the casing so formed, the springs being coiled lconically as best shown in Figs..2 and 3, so as to compress as thin as possible, and the springs d are smaller than the springs e and are placed at the point where the greatest resistance to compression is desired namely the instep, and the heel and toe of the insole, the springs e as stated being larger and hence more easily compressible, and being so set as to cover the remainder ofthe space. The Wire-cloth pieces b by reason of their yielding yet somewhat sti nature distribute the pressure over the entire series of springs, prevent wrinkling or displacement of the leather pieces a, prevent the springs from wearing same, and allow the use of a thin porous leather for said pieces. After the springs are set and suitably secured in their proper places the upper piece a is sewed or otherwise suitably fastened in place over the opening. The device is finished on its exterior in any desired manner, or it may be left as it is.

This device is particularly adapted to the use of persons requiring heavy footwear, which is usually Worn by those doing a considerable walking, especially in inclement Weather. This device possessing as it does great scope of compression and hence great softness and adaptability, and alsoporosity a bellows-like capability of forcing air through its porous sides, obviously possesses advantages over an ordinary insole and providesa very desirable device of the class.

Having thus described my invention, what l claim as new, and desire to securelby Letters Patent of the United States, is-

In an insole comprising top and bottom sections of leather, lining sections of wirecloth laid on the inner sides of said top and bottom sections, a strip of leather sewed to and joining the edges of said top and bottom sections, and springs interposed between said top and bottom sections, substantially as and for the purpose specilied.
