THOMAS MAYES, OF ALBANY, NEW YORK; DAVID MUl-ILFELDER ADMINIS- TRATOR OF SAID MAYES, DECEASED. Y
FOLDING SUPPORT FOR HEAD-RESTS AND THE LIKE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 480,822, dated August 16, 1892.
Application filed January 21, 1 891.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS MAYEs, of Albany, in the county of Albany and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Folding Support for Head-Rests and the Like, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a support for head-rests and the like which may be folded into small compass when not required for use and which may be readily erected to adapt it for use on a car-seat for supporting a head-rest, mosquito-canopy, or a lamp-bracket, all as hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters and figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the support, Fig. 3 a rear elevation, and Figs. 4 and 5 perspective views of different forms of head-rests.
The improved support is formed of two members A B, united by a hinge connection 0 to enable them to be folded together when not required for use or to be brought, respectively, to the horizontal and vertical positions, as shown. To the back of the vertical member B a rack B is secured for engaging a pawl or similar catch d, carried by the head-rest D, said head-rest having a vertical opening d for receiving the vertical member B and permitting the head-restD toslide thereon. The horizontal member Ais provided with a cross-bar A for steadying the support when erected on a car or other seat 10. Adjacent to the hinge C each member A Bis provided, respectively, with a block Ct 19, which blocks are tapered outwardly for entrance between the upholstery of the car-seat at the juncture of the seat portion and back.
The top of the vertical member Bis formed with a stud b for receiving a lamp-bracket, as 15, or for the convenient attachment of a strap where it is desirable to strap the support to any convenient part of the car-seat.
The head-rest may be of the form shown in Serial No. 378,508. (No model.)
Fig. 4 or that shown in Fig. 5. In the former the back D of the head-rest, having the opening d before mentioned, has secured to it two arms d (1 which are received in oppositelylocated diagonal sockets formed in the back D, the outer ends of the arms at d being oppositelycurved to form a somewhat semicircular rest for a persons head, the head-rest being suitably cushioned or upholstered in practice. In the form shown in Fig. 5 a board or plate (1 is secured to the face of the back D, and arms d d are secured to the said board or plate and suitably upholstered.
If desired, a skeleton frame E, as shown in Fig. 1, may be secured to the head-rest for supportingamosquito-canopy. An auxiliary seat F may be secured to the horizontal member A, if desired.
By means of the above-described portable support the comfort of travelers may be materially increased, and the support may be conveniently carried by individuals to be erected whenever desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with the bar B to rest against the back of a car-seat and having a vertical rack B on its rear face and the lower horizontal member adapted to rest on a carseat under the occupant and hinged at its rear edge to the lower end of the rear bar B to fold against the front face thereof, of the headrest D, having a vertical opening through which bar B and its rack passes, and a pawl d on the rear of the head-rest, engaging the said rack, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with the bar B to rest against the back of a car-seat and having a vertical rack on its rear face, the lower horizontal member A to rest on a car-seat under the occupant and hinged at its rear edge to the lower end of the barB to fold against the front face thereof, and the blocks a b on the backs of member A and bar B at the hinged edges thereof to pass behind the upholstery on the car-seat and under the upholstery on the seat-back, respectively, of the head-rest provided with a vertical opening through which passes the bar 13 and its rack and provided with a pawl to engage the rack, substantially as set-forth.
3. The combination, with the bar B to rest against a car-seat back and provided with a rack on its real-side and a reduced upper end or bracket-receiving projection 12, the lower hinged member A, hinged to barB to fold against the front face thereof, and the blocks 1) a on the adjacent ends of the bar B and member A to enter the space between the oar- 10 seat and its back, of the head-rest D, having avertical opening (1 for the bar B and its rack, and a pawl d to engage the rack.
THOMAS MAYES.
