SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 472,006, dated March 29, 1892.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, ROBERT WILLIAM WALKER and JOHN WESLEY PEIFER, citizens of the United States, residing at Vindsor, in the county of Shelby and State of Illinois, havenvented certain new and useful Improvements in Knives; and We do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eX- act description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to a knife for cutting broom-corn, for pruning purposes, or for any use requiring a thin blade and a stout handle which can be firmly grasped in the hand.

The improvement consists of the novel features and the peculiar construction and coinbination of the parts, which will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and Which are shown in the annexed drawings, in which- Figure l is a side View of a knife embodying our invention. Fig. 2 is a view showing the blade detached and arranged in its rela-r tive position. Fig. 3 is a cross-section on the line X X of Fig. Fig'. 4 is a cross-section of the frame only on the line X X of Fig. l.

The knife is composed of the blade B and the frame A. The blade is thin, short, and wide, and approximately of the form shown. The frame is composed of the handle D and the forward extension O, which latter forms a back to the blade and strengthens and stiffens the same. The vertical portion a of the handle is a continuation of the extension C, and is slotted to receive the rear end of the blade B, the said extension C being slotted to receive the upper edge of the blade, which is held to the frame by screws or other fastenings b. The extension C is T-shaped in crossseotion, the cap e affording a broad purchase for the thumb in the operation of the knife. The rear end f of the handle is curved in between its ends to forma finger-rest, and is connected at its upper end with the extension O by the cap e, which spans the interv ening space and forms the upper portion of Athe handle. The curved linger-rest t' and the rings g and h connect the lower ends of the portions a andf of the handle.

The handle is constructed so that when grasped in the hand the forefinger will drop into the rest t', the middle and third fingers will pass through the rings g and h, respectively, the little finger will fall into the rest f, and the thumb will extend along and bear on the back of the knife. The position of the hand relative to the knife is indicated in Fig. 1.

The blade B can be readily detached for sharpening or to be replacedby anew blade,

or for any desired purpose.

Having thus described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A knife for the purpose specified, constructed substantially as hereinbefore shown and described, the same consisting of athin blade and a handle, the latter comprising the cap e and the forward extension O, both in the same plane, the said extension O being slotted to receive the upper edge of the blade, the finger-rests t', g, and h in a lower or different plane from the cap c, the end portions a and f, connecting the lower portion t, g, and 71l with the said cap e, the part f being deiiected to form a finger-rest, and the part a being slotted to receive the rear edge of the blade, substantially as set forth.
