SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 460,770, dated October 6, 1891.

Application filed November 7, 1890. Serial No. 370,650. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ALBERT BARROWS, of Brockton, (Campello,) in the county of Plymouth and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in Shoes, of which the following is a specitication.

My invention relates to seamless shoes, so called-that is, shoes in which the uppers are formed without seam, excepting at the rear of the heel.

It is the object of my invention to provide such improvements in shoes of the class mentioned which will effect a great saving of material by enabling the uppers to be cut from pieces of material which are quite too small to be utilized for the purpose in practice under the present methods.

My invention consists in forming the upper in two parts, united at the heel and extending to and but slightly beyond the toe-cap, so that the latter may form the upper where it is located, combined with the toe-cap united with the sole in any suitable way, and stitched at its rear edge to and upon the forward edge of the vamp, all as I will now proceed to describe and claim, making reference to the accompanying drawings and letters of reference marked thereon, forming a part of this specification, the same letters designating the same parts or features, as the case may be, wherever they occur.

In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of my improved shoe. Fig. 2 is a like View of the upper. Fig. 3 is a plan view of a canvas blank adapted to be placed under the toe-cap. Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view of the toe part of my improved shoe.

My improvements are applicable to shoes of various styles and kinds. As herein shown it is applied to a Congress shoe, in which a designates the upper; bl), the quarters; c, the toe-cap or tip, and (Z the sole.

In carrying out my invention I form the upper a in two pieces, united at the heel along the line it, rounding off the forward ends of the vamp portion of each piece, as at e, somewhat in conformity to the outeredge of the toecap 0 when the same, properly connected with the sole, is placed thereover. The upper edges fof the vamp portion are so formed as that they will just abut or meet, as is clearly shown in Fig. 2, and the toe-cap c is provided with an extension g, adapted to extend up over the meeting-edges f to the quarters Z).

h designates a piece of canvas cut to conform to the form of the toe-cap c, and it may be a very little larger, which piece of canvas is arranged beneath the toe-cap, and with it secured to the sole as the upper would be secured thereto, and the edges of the toe-cap and its extension thus formed are stitched down upon the edges efof the vamp portion of the upper, as indicated at 1?, Fig. 1.

It is to be noted that the vamp does not extend to the extreme end or point of the toe, but under the toe-cap c a sufficient distance only to permit of the latter being stitched or otherwise secured to the forward edges of the vamp portion, the toe-cap itself forming, as it were, the upper at the extreme. toe-point.

The canvas piece h tends to re-enforce the toe-cap 0, so that there may be little or no liability of the stitching along the line 2? breaking away from the material.

The stitching 0f the tongue g to the edges f serves to hold the said edges together and to cover the same.

A box j may be arranged in the toe, as shown in Fig. 4, or the shoe may be made without a box-toe and the cap 0 made plain.

By my invention it will be seen that a great saving of material may be effected, in that the vamp part of the upper need not be extended to any considerable extent beyond the edge of the toe-cap, and, furthermore, pieces which are too small to be utilized in the construction of uppers by the modes now followed in the manufacture of boots and shoes are entirely available in the formation of my improved shoe, while the latter is given the appearance of and fully subserves all the purposes of a seamless shoe.

Having thus described my invention and explained one of the ways of constructing the same, I declare that what I claim is A shoe provided with an upper formed in two parts, comprising the shank and heel portions and a shortened vamp united at the heel and extending to the toe-cap, the vamp parthaving the rounded ends 6 and the abutting edgesf, in combination with thetoe-cap 3, provided with the tongue 9', connected with name to this specification, in the presence of the sole and united at its rear edge to the two subscribing witnesses,- this 25th day of IO forward edges of the vamp part by means of October, A.
