F. J. D. UHAPPELL.
FLAG STAFF HOLDER.
110.413.131. Patented Oct. 15, 1889.
BY gap/3M 1 WITNESSES:
ATTORNEY.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FLORANCE J. D. OHAPPELL, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND, ASSIGNOR OF FORTY- NINE ONE-HUNDREDTHS TO WILBUR H. RIDDLE, OF SAME PLACE.
FLAG STAFF HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 413,131, dated October 15, 1889.
Application filed June 11, 1889. $erial No. 813,930 (NomodeL) To aZl whom it may concerm Be it known that I, FLORANCE-J. D. CHAP- FELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flag-Staff Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates -to a holder for flagstaffs, and is designed for supporting flags [0 from the windows and balconies of houses and other like places.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of one form of the holder and a flag-staff. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the device on the line 2 2. Fig. 3 is a side view of another form of the holder, showing substantially the features seen in Fig. 1 and an additional feature. Fig. 4 is a front elevation of the base of the holder shown in Fig. 3.
The letter A designates the shank of a flagstaif clamp, having a pivot-hole for a pivotbolt 12. It is also provided with a segment shaped rack c, which is concentric with the pivot-hole. The clamp by which the flagstaff is gripped is attached to this shank A. A standard comprises two uprights d, having a pivot-bolt'b, and secured to a base-plate f.
The said clamp-shankA has position between the two standard uprights cl, and the bolt Z7 passes through the pivot-hole in the shank, so that the latter and the flag may be tilted in a vertical plane. Each upright (Z has a 5 5 hole g, and a lock-pin g passes through the two holes and engages with one of the notches of the segment-shaped rack c. It will be seen the clamp-shank A may be tilted 011 the pivot-bolt b in order to give the flag-staff'the 4o desired position, and then by inserting the lock-pin g the said position will be maintained. The shank A, as already stated, has a clamp to grip the flag-staff h. The shankA has two concave or notched seats twhich 5 serve as one jaw of the clamp, and a hook j serves as the other jaw of the clamp and is attached to a screw-threaded bolt 7t, which passes freely through a portion of the shank A. A thumb-nut Z 011 the said bolt serves to draw the two parts M of the clamp together.
Figs. 1 to 4, inclusive, illustrate that the clamp may be pivoted to tilt in a vertical plane or may be fixed rigidly to the base, as in Fig. 1. i
The base-plate f has a loose ring 7' or other suitable devices for attaching cords or other fastenings of decorations, .such as banners, shields, or evergreens, used on holiday occasions.
Having now fully described my invention, I wish it to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise construction of parts as shown in my drawings, and heretofore particularly described, but reserve to myself the right to vary any of the said parts or substi- 6 tute others for the better carrying out of my invention without departing from the essential principle thereof.
What I claim is 1. In a flag-staff holder, the combination, with a shank having a supporting-base and concave seats for a flag-staff, of a screw-bolt passing through an aperture in said shank and having a hook at one end to embrace the staff, and a screw-nut at the other end whereby 7 5 the staff is clamped to the concave seats, substantially as specified.
2. In a flag-staff holder, the combination, with the standards (Z and the supporting-base, of the shank A, pivoted between the stand- 8c ards and having a notched edge adapted to be held by a bolt g, the shank being provided with concave seats t', and a clamping-bolt passing through an aperture of the shank, whereby the flag-staff is held, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
FLORANCE J. D. OHAPPELL.
