KNITTED UNDER GARMENT.
Patented Oct. 15, 1889.
UNITED STATESl PATENT OEEICE..
MARGARET ORR, OF LONDON, COUNTY OF MIDDLESEX, ENGLAND.
KNITTED UNDER-GARM ENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 412,784, dated October 15, 1889.` Application filed November 29, 1887. Serial No. 256,423. (Specimens.) Patented in England November 17, 1886, No. 14,951.
To @ZZ whom it may concern.`
Beit known that I, MARGARET ORR, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at London, in the county of Middlesex, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination or other Under-Garments. (for which I have obtained Letters Patent in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, No. 14,951, bearing date November 17, 1886,) of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in combination or other garments-such as under-vestswhereby the articles named are made with lighter or thinner parts or portions where other garments are superposed in greater bulk than is requisite for warmth. In other words, a part or parts of the said under-clothing are made thicker, closer, or of heavier material than the remainder.
The particular object 4of this invention is directed to reducing the bulk of the material of the under-vest or combination-garment at the waist, and that portion of such garments in ladies7 dress under the corset, where the corset fits to the figure, and in gentlemens dress of that portion under the waistband. 'By this means the bulk, and therefore the weight, of the garment is reduced at certain points, the figure or personal appearance of the wearer is improved, and the Vital parts of the system may be more effectually protected, either by a greater bulk of the material at such parts or from a closer fitting of the garments produced by my invention.
In carrying out the invention the garment or portions thereof may be knitted either by hand or by a machine, or by other suitable means for the purpose in View. The obj ect is accomplished by using a thread or strand of the required material of a finer, thinner, softer, or lighter grade at the part or parts of the garments above mentioned. The same comparative effect is produced by increasing the thickness of the thread or closeness of the texture at other parts-as, for example, making the upper or bust portion of the garment thick and full for spare or slight tigures, the part at the waist and under the corset of thin and light material, and that portion covering the hips again thicker. The
material of these three portions of the garment may be of three different grades of fineness of the thread or threads employed, to suit the figure or taste of the wearer.
By this invention a greater degree of elasticity is given to the garment than is usual, thereby allowing the other or outer garments to iit more neatly and closer to the figure, to the reduction of the number of folds and drag upon the Waist, while the vital parts of the system are amply protected. The materials used comprise wool, merino, cashmere, silk, cotton, or other fibers used for such goods. Any combination thereof may also be employed-as, for instance, pure wool for the upper portion of the garment, silk at or near the waist, and cotton at the lower part of the garment. The parts may also be separately made and joined together afterward.
In the annexed drawings, Figure 1 is a combination-garment, and Fig. 2 an undervest, made according to my invention of the fabric known as stockinet, the part marked a representing' a broad zone of the thin or light portion of the garment, as previously described; b, the thick upper part ofthe garment, and c the lower part, also thicker or closer than the part a. Fig. 3 is a detail sketch intended to illustrate the difference in the size or weight of the thread used in forming the garment, the part a being of a iine or light thread, while b and c represent a thicker or heavier thread used at those part-s, although not necessarily the same grade or material.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
As an improved article of manufacture, a knitted under-vest or combination-garment having a broad zone at the waist continuous with the adjoining upper and lower portions thereof, but composed of finer yarn than the remainder, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
MARGARET OBR. Witnesses:
FREDERICK CRANE, JASPER WETTER.
