Description

L. .0. DION.
(No Model.)
(EASTER.
Patented Aug. 6, 1889.'
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LE'oN 0. Dion, OF NATIOK, MASSACHUSETTS.
CASTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 408,595, dated August 6, 1889.
Application filed July 1888.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LEON O. DION, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Natick, in the county of Middlcsex and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Casters, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
This invention has for its object to improve that type of spring-yielding casters for articles of furniture in which the caster-wheel can freely revolve under the ordinary weight of the article, but will be cramped or checked by a brake when the article is depressed by the weight of a person thereupon.
My invention consists in a caster comprising a pin to be fixed in the leg of a chair, stool, or other article, a hollow case swiveled at its upper end upon the pin to rotate thereupon and provided with a lateral brake proj ection, and a vertically-yielding spring-pressed hub rotatable axially on the pin and arranged in and rotating with the swiveled case and having the caster-wheel, so that the hub and case can rotate axially, and when the case descends its lateralv brake projection comes in direct contact with the wheel to prevent the latter turning.
The invention is illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a caster embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 a central vertical sectional view of the same.
In the drawings, the letter a represents one of the legs of a chair or stool or other furniture to which the improved caster is attached.
1) represents the caster .wh eel or roller, that is journaled on the pin 19, secured to the forked ends 0' c of the vertically-yieldin g hub c, as shown.
The hub c is vertically yielding within the metal sleeve or shell (1 against the influence of the coiled spring 8, arranged within the said shell between its closed upper end and the top of the hub c, as shown.
fis' a headed bolt or pin passing loosely through Vertical perforations in the hub 0 Serial No. 279,738. (No model.)
and upper end of the shell (Z, as shown in Fig. 2, the upper end of said bolt or pin being driven firmly into theleg of the chair or other furniture on which the caster is to be used.
f is a metal washer secured to the pin or bolt f and interposed between the lower end of the furniture-leg a and upper end of the shell or sleeve d, as shown, so as to prevent the, wearing of the lower end of the furniture by the rotation of the caster-shell (l.
d" is a brake projection on one side of the sleeve or shell (I, which, when the chair is 00- cupied, is brought in contact with the top of the caster-wheel b, thus holding the latter firmly secured to the said shell and preventing the furniture from rolling on the fioor as long as it is occupied.
When the occupant leaves the chair, &c., the spring 6 will automatically force the sleeve or shell-d upward sufficiently to disengage the brake projection d from the caster-wheel b, as shown in the drawings, when the furniture may be rolled on its caster-wheels from place to place, as may be desired.
Having thus fully described the nature, con struction, and operation of my invention, I wish to secure by Letters Patent and claim- A caster consisting of a pin f to be fixed in a leg, a hollow case d, swiveled at its upper end upon the pin to rotate thereupon and provided with a lateral brake projection c and a vertically-yieldin g spring-pressed hub 0, retatable axially on the pin and arranged in and rotating with the swiveled case and having the wheel I), so that the .hub and case can rotate axially, and when the case descends its lateral brake projection comes in direct contact with the wheel to prevent the lattcrturning, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, on this 7th day of July, A.
LEON O. DION.
