W. T. DOREMUS.
PILLOW AND ITS SLIP No. 395,043. Patented Dec. 25, 1888.
INVENTOR:
ATTORNEYS.
WITNESSES:
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE.
\VILTIIAM T. DOREMUS, OF FLATBUSH, NE YORK.
PILLOW AN D ITS SLIP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 395,043, dated December 25, 1888.
Application filed August 28, 1888. Serial No. 283,955. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM T. DOREMUS, of Flatbush, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pillows and their Slips or Removable Covers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention more particularly relates to pillows of a compound character, and in which the entire pillow is composed of a cluster of pillows or parallel rolls, substantially as described in Letters Patent Nos. 243,228 and 247,892, issued to me and dated, respectively, June 21, 1881, and October -l, 1881; but my invention essentially differs from the cushion or pillow and bolster described in said patents in making each roll an independent pillow covered by its own independent ticking, instead of being connected together along their parallel sides, and in providing an independent slip or removable cover made up of longitudinal compartments adapted to separately receive and hold in parallel relation with each other the independent rolls or pillows within them, and to permit of the inde pendent removal, when required, of said inpendent tick-covered rolls or pillows from the slip.
The general purposes of the invention, however, are the same as described in the Letters Patent hereinl'iefore referred tonamely, to prevent the displacement and packing of the material used in stul'iing the rolls or series of pillows; to permit of the several rolls be ing differently stuffed either as regards compactness or the employment of different stufiing materials within them to suit the pleasure or comfort of the user by simply turning over or :uljusiing the rolls; and to form not only an adjustable support for the head as regards height, but also, by varying the positions of the several rolls relatively to each other, to give a varied support to the neck and shoulders or other parts of the body adjacent to the head; but these and other conveniences are more perfectly secured by the improvement which is the subject of this specificatimi.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a compound pillow having my invention ap: plied, part of the pillow-slip being broken away. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same, and Fig. 3 a transverse section of the pillow-slip with the rolls or independent pillows removed therefrom.
Although only three independent pillows or rolls and three compartments for the same in the pillow-slip are here shown, the invention is not restricted to any such number in the series of rolls and compartments in the pillow-slip for their reception; but it is preferred not to have the same less than three.
A A indicate the rolls or independentpillows, either stuffed with the same or different materials, and so as to have either the same or different degrees of hardness or softness. These rolls are complete in themselves as pillows, and have each an independent ticking or permanent cover, I). Although represented as lying parallel with each other within the removable pillow cover or slip B, which incloses them, they are not connected by their ticks or permanent covers I) with each other; but this relative arrangement is secured for them by constructing the removable pillow cover or slip B with a correspomling number of parallel or longitudinal compartments, 0, the walls of which are stitched or otherwise suitably secured together where they join one another on or along their parallel and adjaeen t sides-as, for instance, at e-which forms a central or intermediate place of union for the entire series or cluster of coinpa'rtmeuts. Said compartment-slip B may either be made of a single piece of material joined together, as at (l, or it may be constructed of two or more pieces. The independentpillows or rolls A are slipped to their places within these compartments 0 in the slip B, which are left open or made to open at either or .both of their ends for the purpose, and any one of them may be removed or drawn out, as required, without disturbing theothers; or the slip B may be wholly removed, when required, for the purpose of washing it or substituting another slip for it, as needed. \Vhen the compartment-slip or removable cover 13, however, has the independent rolls or pillows A within it, then said independent pillows maybe shifted or adjusted in common with the pillowslip either as represented in Fig". l or as shown in Fig. 2, or in any other suitable relation, to change the character or surface of the support which the cluster of pillows is required to give the head or other parts of the body.
By the eonst ruetion of the sl ip-cover in (0111- partinents, as described, and its close hug 01? each independent pillow or pernn'ment cover thereof, said slip-cover, unlike a, loose cover inclosing the several independent pillows eollectively but not separately, in no way restricts 0r interferes with the ditl'erent adj ust' nients oi the several indep mdent pillows relatively to each other, and gives a belt er support todhe head betweml an two of the independent pillows.
l'laving thus (.lescribml my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A removable pillow cover or slip made,
t l l substantially as herein shown and described, with a series of longitudinal compartments 1 secured together in parallel relation with each other on adjacent sides interinediately of the entire cluster and adapted to contain independent scpalately-covered rolls or pillows,- substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with a removable pillow cover or slip constructed with a series of longitudinal compartments secured together in parallel relation with each other on adjacent sides interlnetfliately of the entire cluster, of independent separately-eovered rolls or pillows loosely or removably fitted within said coinpartmei'ils, essentially as shown and de scribed.
WILLIAM 'l. [)OREMUS.
