Fastening means attached to the pages of a book leave undesirable impressions on the contacted surfaces.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION In accordance with the invention claimed, an improved bookmark is provided which utilizes an elongated stretchable member having a closed loop at one end which is stretched and placed around one of the covers of a book and an appendage which extends along the page of the book to be marked and over a part of its cover to a point on the loop at which it is detachably secured.
It is, therefore, one object of this invention to provide a new and improved bookmark which will not harm or mar contacted surfaces when inserted or withdrawn from the book.
Another object of this invention is to provide a bookmark looped over the cover of a book having an appendage which passes over the page of the book to be marked and is detachable fastened to the looped portion of the bookmark at a point on the cover of the book.
A further object of this invention is to provide a stretchable bookmark which is secured to the book and may be personalized by an ornament which also serves as gripping means to aid the handicapped or elderly in using the bookmark.
These and other objects and advantages of this invention will become apparent from the following description of the several figures of the drawing representing several embodiments of the present invention.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWING FIG. 1 is a perspective view of a book with a stretchable bookmark having its looped end surrounding its cover and its appendage passing over the page to be marked with its free end ready to be attached to a portion of the loop.
FIG. 2 is a right end view of FIG. 1 showing the appendage of the bookmark detachably secured to its looped portion.
FIG. 3 is an elongated perspective view of the bookmark shown in FIG. 1.
FIG. 4 is a partial view of a modification of the material used for the bookmark shown in FIGS. 1-3.
FIG. 5 is a partial view of a further modification of the material used for the bookmark of FIGS. 14.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT Referring more particularly to the drawing by characters of reference, FIGS. 1-3 illustrate a novel bookmark I0 comprising an elongated stretchable ribbon like member 11 formed of any suitable material, such as the known rubber garter like material shown in FIGS. 1-3 or the modern stretchable lace like material shown in FIGS. 4 and 5. Although any suitable material may be used, it should have the capability of stretching and then returning to its original condition.
The ribbon like member 1] is provided with a loop portion 12 at one end for extending around one of the covers of a book 13 such as, for example, its front cover, as shown in FIGS. 1 and 2, and an appendage 14 which is long enough to extend from the loop portion 12 through the length of the book along the page to be marked and back over the cover to a point along the loop portion at which it is detachably secured.
The ribbon like member 11 may be cut to a length of twenty eight inches which when stretched to its fullest extent may reach forty eight inches in length. Sixteen inches at one end is used to provide the loop portion which is secured or suitably fastened together to form a loop, as shown in the drawings, eight inches in length for readily slipping over the cover of most books. If the looped portion is formed by overlapping and sewing, the edge of the sewed end may be treaded with an adhesive which hardens to encase the thread of the stitching and to prevent unravelling of the ribbon. The remaining portion of the ribbon is used for the appendage for extending from the loop portion between the pages of the book to be marked.
As shown in the drawing, the free end of the ribbon is provided with a velco type fastener 15 which comprises a pad 15A of a plurality of matted wool like plastic threads which interlock in a meashing manner with a cooperating pad 158 comprising a plurality of looped ended fine wire like members fastened on the outside of the loop portion 12 at a point along the face of the cover of the book, as shown in FIG. 1. This interlocking means is well known in the art and used for fastening means particularly in the clothing trade.
If desired, an ornament 16 may be attached to the free end of the appendage 14 of the ribbon like member, and as shown in FIG. 1 is attached by a short piece of ornamental chain 17 to an aperture 18 in the free end of appendage 14.
FIGS. 4 and 5 illustrate other types of ribbon like material which may be used for the bookmark with FIG. 4 illustrating a flower design elastic tape 19 while FIG. 5 illustrates a lace configuration elastic tape 20.
Although but a few embodiments of the present invention have been illustrated and described, it will be apparent to those skilled in the art that various changes and modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit of the invention or from the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
