SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 387,771, dated August 14, 1888.
Application filed January 29, 1887. Serial No. 225,938. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JAMES H. DAVIS, of Danville, in the county of Boyle and State of Kentuclcy, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gate-Hinges, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improvement in gatehinges, which hinges, while capable of a more general use, are intended especially for use with gates which may be opened by persons approaching from either side; and the invention consists in certain features of construction and novel combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a part of a gate embodying my im proveinents. Fig. 2 is a detail view illustrating the upper hinge, and Figs. 3 and 4. are detail views illustrating the lower hinge.
The upper hinge, A, is formed ofa part, 1, secured to the gate B and having apin, 2, and the part 3, secured to the hinge-post C and having one, two, or more perforations, 4, fitted to receive the pin 2 of the part 1. It is preferred to use a plurality of perforations 4, as shown, in order that the gate may be adjusted to act in the manner desired. The lower hinge, D, is formed with sections 5 and 6. The hinge-section 6 has a head formed with a hearing, 7, and with side ribs, 8, back of which I form grooves 9, and the head has flanges 10 in rear of said grooves 9. The hinge-section 5 is secured to the gate and has its head 11 provided with a socket or recess, 12, formed with a main portion, 13, and depressions 14 to fit the head of hinge-section 6 in the different positions of the parts.
From the head of part 8, I project a pivotpin, 15, which enters an opening, 16, in pivotplate 17. This pivot-plate has on its rear side a non-circular projection or portion, 18, which fits a corresponding opening, 19, in what, for convenience of reference, 1 term the baseplate. In the construction shown the post 0 constitutes such base-plate. The opening 16, it will be seen, is arranged eccentrically to the portion 18, so that by setting the pivot-plate rotarily to different adjustments by removing it and replacing its portion 18 in opening 19 in difierent relations the pivot-opening 16 may be set toward one or the opposite side of the hinge-post, as may be desired, in order to secure the gate in vertical alignment.
The gate, it will be seen, may be opened by a person approaching it from either side.
Manifestly the gate proper may be of ordinary construction, and the invention can be easily applied to a common farm-gate.
The pivot-plate 17 may be secured by screws or otherwise to the post 0. Usually the pivotpin is threaded and fits a suitable thread in the socket of block 17, although manifestly in a common farnrgate the pin 15 might be screwed directly into the post without the in tervention of plate 17; but I prefer the construction as shown and before described.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Pat ent, is-
l. The pivot-plate having a non-circular portion and provided with an opening arranged eccentrically to said portion, the hingesection having a pin fitted to said eccentric opening, and the second section or strap fitted to said first section, all combined substantially as set forth.
2. In a hinge, a pivot plate or section having a non-circular portion and provided with an opening arranged eccentrically to said non circular portion, combined with a hinge section adapted to receive or coact with another hinge-section and having a pin or stem fitted to enter said opening, all substantially as and for the purposes specified.
3. The improved hinge herein described, comprising the hinge-section 6, having main rounded bearing 7, and provided at the opposite sides thereof with ribs 8 8, and the hingesection 5,having a socket or recess formed with a main portion, 13, and with depressions 14. 14 at the opposite sides of such portion 13, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
