Abstract

A medical device for collecting solid and liquid waste discharged from an orifice or opening in a patient, said device comprising a disposable bag into which the waste is discharged, the bag having a waste receiving opening; a velcro type fastener secured to the periphery of the bag opening; and a mating velcro type fastener secured detachably to the patient and surrounding the orifice or opening whereby the bag is sealed to the patient in a liquid tight manner when the two fasteners are detachably engaged.

MEDICAL DEVICE: RECTA-BAG FIELD OF THE INVENTION I My invention is directed toward an inexpensive disposable medical device for collecting solid and liquid waste discharged from an orifice or opening in a patient whereby the waste can be disposed of conveniently, cleanly and quickly. My invention eliminates, for example the need for bed pans, which must be continually cleaned and stored when not in use.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS:

Referring first to FIGS. 1-3, a ring shaped velcro type fastener 10 is provided with a soft rubber gasket 12 integral therewith and having a projecting lip 14. Thegasket is detachably secured to the skin of the patient by an adhesive layer 32 and surrounds the anus as the patient lies on his or her back. A disposable plastic bag 16 has a waste receiving opening surrounded by a second mating velcro type fastener 18. This fastener is provided with an integral soft rubber gasket 20 having a groove 22.

When the fasteners are detachably engaged the lip 14 of gasket 12 engages the groove 22 of gasket 20 in a liquid type manner whereby the invention can be used as previously described.

Referring now to FIGSv 4-6, the patient can wear panties 24 or underwear with an opening 26 aligned with the fasteners whereby the fasteners can squeeze the fabric therebetween when engaged. The panties can have another opening or slit 28 through which a catheter 30 can extend. The catheter can be mounted using velcro fasteners in the same manner as the bag.

Alternatively, the fabric can be sealed to the body with the opening aligned with the hole. The fastener can be secured to the fabricand engaged by the bag fastener as before. 1

While I have described my invention with particular reference to the drawings, such is not to be considered as limiting its actual scope.

Having thus described this invention, what is claimed as new is:

1. A medical device for collecting solid and liquid waste discharged from an orifice or opening in a patient, said device comprising:

a disposable bag into which the waste is discharged,

said bag having a waste receiving opening;

a velcro type fastener secured to the periphery of the bag opening; and

a mating velcro type fastener secured detachably to the patient and surrounding the orifice or opening whereby the bag is sealed to the patient in liquid tight manner when the two fasteners are detachably engaged, one of the fasteners being provided with a plurality of small loops, the other being provided with rug like material;

wherein said bag is plastic; and v wherein the portion of the mating fastener remote from the other fastener carries adhesive means detachably securable to the patient.

2. The device of claim 1 wherein the patient wears a garment with an opening aligned with the mating fasteners, said fasteners engaging each other through said garment.

Claims (2)

1. A medical deVice for collecting solid and liquid waste discharged from an orifice or opening in a patient, said device comprising: a disposable bag into which the waste is discharged, said bag having a waste receiving opening; a velcro type fastener secured to the periphery of the bag opening; and a mating velcro type fastener secured detachably to the patient and surrounding the orifice or opening whereby the bag is sealed to the patient in liquid tight manner when the two fasteners are detachably engaged, one of the fasteners being provided with a plurality of small loops, the other being provided with rug like material; wherein said bag is plastic; and wherein the portion of the mating fastener remote from the other fastener carries adhesive means detachably securable to the patient.

2. The device of claim 1 wherein the patient wears a garment with an opening aligned with the mating fasteners, said fasteners engaging each other through said garment.
