FIG. 2
INVENTOR. 3 JERRY L. STONEBURNER BY WM ATTORNEY nor corL RACK BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION 1. Field of the Invention This invention relates to coil racks of the type normally employed to support coils of rolled steel products and the like.
2. Description of the Prior Art Prior structures of this type have usually comprised spaced parallel wooden four by four members temporarily fastened to a flat bed trailer, for example. Metal coil racks have been proposed for use in railway cars (See US. Pat. No. 3,291,073) and for use on flat bed trailers (See US. Pat No. 3,460,684).
This invention enables coils of hot steel strip to be immediately loaded on trailers for transport without awaiting cooling as has heretofore been believed necessary.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION A hot coil rack for a flat bed trailer or the like comprises a pair of spaced parallel hollow members for directly receiving a coil of hot steel strip or the like and positioned on a base plate and secured thereto and to transversely positioned angle members at the ends thereof. Ceramic fiber insulating material is positioned between the spaced parallel frame members. The construction is such that heat conduction is minimized by a minimum engagement of the supporting members with the hot coil and radiated heat is prevented from damaging the supporting structure by the insulation provided.
DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS FIG. '1 is a perspective view of a portion of a flat bed trailer with the hot coil rack positioned thereon.
FIG. 2 is a top plan view of the hot coil rack and FIG. 3 is a vertical section on line 3-3 of FIG. 2.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT In its simplest form the hot coil rack consists of a base plate 10 on which a pair of spaced parallel hollow box frame members 1 1 are secured with the ends of the hollow box frame members arranged so that air can flow therethrough. Transversely positioned angle members 12 are secured to the base plate 10 at the ends of the hollow box frame members 11 and extend sidewardly there beyond to provide a rigid structure.
A layer of ceramic fiber insulation such as aluminum silicate fiber 13 is positioned on the base plate 10 between the hollow box frame members 11 and is covered by a sheet of galvanized steel 14. A plurality of cross members 15 formed of hollow tubular metal members are positioned on the base plate 10 between the hollow body frame members 11 and are secured thereto to insure the positioning of the hollow body frame members relative to the base plate 10. A plurality of angle brackets 16 are affixed to the inner opposed sides of the hollow body frame members 11 so as to insure the retention of the sheet of galvanized steel 14 which forms a cover for the insulating material 13.
Those skilled in the art will observe that when the hot coil rack disclosed herein is positioned on the flat bed of a trailer coils of hot strip steel may be positioned on the coil rack with their axes between and parallel with the hollow body frame members ll so that the coils are in contact with the comers of the hollow body members 11 and do not touch any other part of the hot coil rack and thereby eliminate heat conduction to a very great degree. The hollow body frame members 11 are preferably formed of box tubing wherein the corners are slightly rounded so that the transverse surfaces of the hot coils positioned thereagainst will not be creased or otherwise damaged thereby. The section of the coil describing an are between the hollow body frame members 11 is spaced above the sheet 14 which covers the insulating material 13 and the high temperature of the hot coil does not reach the base plate 10 due to the insulation layer 13 and the relatively small amount of heat that is conducted through the hollow body frame members 11 is not sufficient to damage or distort the base plate 10 of the hot coil rack.
The several components of the invention as hereinbefore described are preferably welded to one another by a plurality of spaced welds so as to minimize heat conduction therethrough. The hot coil rack is so designed structurally as to be able to resist any tendency towards distortion that might otherwise occur from the presence of the coils of hot metal thereon. In use chains and binder clamps are used to hold the coil rack on the flat bed trailer when there are no coils thereon and when coils are positioned thereon, the chains are passed through the coils and fastened to the trailer by the binder clamps, all as will occur to those skilled in the art and which action easily and quickly secures the coils and the hot coil rack to the flat bed trailer.
Although but one embodiment of the present invention has been illustrated and described, it will be apparent to those skilled in the art that various changes and modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit of the invention.
I claim:
