ATENT WAGON END-=GATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part. of Letters Patent No. 369,894, dated September 13, 1887.
Application filed January 19. 1387. Serial No. 224,759. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, ROBERT R. TIUHENOR and PHILETUS WALKER, both of Henning, in the county of Otter Tail and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and Improved VVagon-Box End-Gate, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming a part thereof, in which Figure 1 is an end elevation of awagon-box to which our improved end-gate has been applied. Fig. 2 is ahorizontal section taken on line m w in Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a detail perspec'tive view of the end-gate removed from the box.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
The object of our invention is to provide an effective end-gate which maybe readily removed and replaced in the wagon-box and which will securely bind the ends of the side boards of the box.
Our invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as will. be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
To the inner surface of the side-boards A A of the wagon-box B, near their rear ends,
a rearwardly-projecting flange, d, which abuts.
against the angle-plate a. The said plate is also provided with the hooks e, which are adapted to enter into the apertures c of the plate a. To the rear side of the end'gate 0,
near the opposite end, is secured a plate, E, having ears f proj ecting rearwardly therefrom, in which is pivoted a crank-rod, 9. On the rod gis pivoted a forked lever, F, having at the extremities of its two arms hooks h,
adapted to enter into the apertures c of the plate a. The opposite end of the forked lever is provided with an arm, 2', and to the rear surface of the end-gate 0 is secured a plate, j, to which is pivoted a button, 70, capable of engaging the arm 2'.
The endgate is put in position in the wagonbox by inserting the hooks e in the apertures c of the plate a, then while the lever F is swung outward inserting the hooks h in the apertures c of the angle-plate a, then swinging the lever toward the'end-ga-te O. The swinging of the lever turns the crank-rod gin its supports and draws the side boards toward each other, bringing them into close contact with the ends of the end-gate. The final movement of the arm 13 of the lever F toward the end gate clamps the end gate firmly against the flange b of the angle-plate a. When the arm 6 is in contact with the end-gate, the button It is allowed to fall over the arm, thus securing the lever F.
Having thus fully described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with the. end-gate O, of the apertured plates at a, secured to the sideboards of the wagon, and formed with the flanges b b .on their rear edges and with threaded shanks on their lower ends extending through the bottom of the wagon and having nuts thereon, the plate D, provided with the hooks e, the crank-rod g, pivotally con nected with the end-gate, the forked lever F, provided with hooks h, mounted pivotally on the crank-rod g and adapted to engage the apertu red plate a, and means, substantially as shown and described, for fastening the lever F.
