Be it known that I, EBEN T. STARR, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Skates; and I do hereby declare. that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in Whichy Figure l is a side view of my invention;

rIhe object of this invention is to obtain a skate which will admit of being adjusted rin such a' manner as to compensate for the varying height ofthe heels ot' boots and shoes, and thereby admit of the foot ofthe skater having aproper relative position with the skate, so as to insure case and comfort in skating.

In order to effect this result the runner of the skate should be about parallel with the sole of the boot or shoe, and it'said parts have this position with a low-heeled boot orI shoe, it follows as a matter of course that with a high-heeled boot or shoe the ball or front part ofthe boot will be depressed, and the weight of the skater made to bear unduly on the front part ofthe runner. Ou the other hand,yif the runner of the skate be parallel with the sole of a high-heeled boot or shoe, and a low-heeled i boot or shoe be worn by the skater, the weight of the latter will be made to bear on the backv part or heel ofthe runner.

which is tted in a groove, 1i, at. one side of the post E, (see Fig. 1,) the post E having-an oblong horizontal slot, f', made through it to admit of the screw f sliding therein to suit the position of the runner and admit of the moving of the same on its pivot a.

The back, central, and' front posts, C E D, of the foot-stand may be formed of pendants slotted vertically to receive the runner, (See Fig. 3,) in which the construction ofthe front post, l), is clearly shown.

From this description it will be seen that by' relaxing or unscrewiug the set-screws ofthe front part of t-he runner may be raised orlowered so as to be parallel with the l'oot stand A,

Having vthus described my invention,what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

Having the foot-stand A made adjustable in respect to the runner B, substantially in the manner herein shown and described, so that y the skate may be adjusted to boot-heels ofdif ferent heights, and the runner be thus readily made to occupy a horizontal position in respect to the bottom of the wearers foot, all as set forth.
