The seal 13 is formed from a semirigid vinyl plastic and is tubular in form, the seal being received within the jacket 12. The wall thickness of the seal varies, the greatest thickness being at 50 and reduced as to external diameter at 51. The internal diameter of the seal is uniform and externally the portions 50 and 51 are provided with annular ribs 55 and 56.
The member 14 constitutes a bonnet preferably formed from metal such as stainless steel and includes a substantially parabolic shell 60 and an integrally formed tubular piece 61 which is joined by an annular wall 62 to the shell 60.
When the cap 10 and the spray control 11 are assembled, the knob 32 projects through the annular flange 22 as shown in FIGURE 3. The seal 13 internally engages the side wall 21 of the cap with the rib or flange 55 internally engaging the side wall 31 of the spray control 11. The bonnet 14 is passed through the jacket 12 so that the wall 62 of the bonnet engages the wall 42 of the jacket with the result that when the screw threads 40 of the jacket engages the threads 23 of the cap, circular wall 61 of the bonnet is in alignment with the end of the circular wall 21 of the cap with the rib or flange 56 interposed therebetween as shown in FIGURE 3. The wall 42 by engaging the wall 62 of the bonnet holds the bonnet and the jacket together and the screw threaded portions of the cap and the jacket secure these members in assemblage. The seal 13 is held by the rib or flange 56 being interposed between ends of the bonnet and the cap. This assemblage is easy of accomplishment and the device may be disassembled with equal ease. Set screws may be utilized to assure that the parts entering into the shower head are held against separation.
The tubular arm 4 does not connect with the shower head through the apex of the bonnet but is joined to the shower head along a side of said bonnet as shown in FIG- URES 1, 2 and 3. This arrangement allows the shower head to be tilted to different positions so that the shower spray may be directed upwardly or downwardly as desired by the user of the shower. Specifically, one end of the arm 4 is screw threaded at 6 for connection with the fixture while the opposite end is screw threaded at 70 and provided with a ring or bead 71 inward from the screw threads 70 and with a socket member 72 confining in part a ball packing 73 which surrounds tubular arm 4 between bead 71 and the screw threads 70. The shell 60 is provided with a depressed socket 74 adapted to receive the ball packing 73 and provide a seat therefor when the threaded end 70 of the tubular arm is passed within the shell 60. This construction allows a swiveling action of the shell and associated parts relative to the tubular arm 4. The threaded end 70 of the arm is passed through a cup washer 75 which may be formed of nylon, there being a coiled compression spring 76 adapted to surround the threaded end of the arm 4, with a nut 77, preferably of plastic, such as nylon, secured to the threads 70 so as to compress the spring 76 to the desired degree to provide a watertight swivel connection between the shell 60 and the pipe 4. If the parts have been assembled as described, the appearance of the shower head will be that of FIGURE 3.
The jacket may be ornamented with a design to enhance the decorative appearance of the shower head. Thus, externally the jacket has beveled ends 43 and 44 and the bevel 44 may have a fluted edge 80, while the external surface of the jacket between said beveled ends may have a series of longitudinal flat faces 81 with grooves formed between adjacent flat faces as shown at 82. When the jacket is formed of a material such as Plexiglas which is transparent and crystal like in appearance in conjunction with chromium plated metallic mem- 4 bers such as the shell and the cap 20, the shower head has a very attractive appearance.
The operation, uses and advantages of the invention are as follows.
Dual shower heads may be provided as shown in FIG- URES 1 and 2 or a single shower head with a suitable attachment for the tubular arm may be made to a fixture. The shower spray control member 11 will turn easily within the cap 10 and in so doing the transverse openings 32 and 33 will vary the area of said openings, as shown in FIGURE 5. Thus the character of the shower spray is varied and the arrangement is such that the shower spray extends straight outwardly from the shower head without any side spray. If desired, the passage of water through the two transverse openings may be shifted so as to close any passage therethrough, or the degree of passage may be varied as has been pointed out.
The forming of the present shower head is one of molding certain plastics and the forming of certain of the metallic members, specifically the cap and the bonnet. This allows a full size shower head to be provided and at an inexpensive cost so far as the manufacture and assembly thereof is concerned. By combining the plastic members with metal there is no corrosion problem and it has been found that there is no algae buildup. When the parts of the shower head are assembled as shown in FIGURE 3, the seal 13 prevents water leakage other than through the spray openings 32 and 33. If the spray openings are in closed position, water is confined in the shower head without leakage from the head.
I claim:
1. A shower head, including: a cap having a circular side wall and an annular front wall, the front wall provided with an annular series of transverse perforations, a spray control member within said cap and having a circular side wall and a front wall provided with an annular series of perforations adapted to overlap the perforations of the cap, a bonnet having a tubular extension, a tubular seal between the circular side wall of the cap and the tubular extension of the bonnet and engaging the circular side wall of the spray control, an annular jacket surrouding the circular side wall of the cap and the tubular extension of the bonnet and securing said members in assemblage, and means for connecting the bonnet to a source of water supply.
2. The device of claim 1: said means comprising a tubular arm, and a watertight swivel connection between the tubular arm and the bonnet.
3. The device of claim 1, said seal formed with external ribs adapted to be receited between ends of the circular side wall of the cap and the tubular wall of the bonnet.
4. The device of claim 1: said jacket seal and spray control being formed from a plastic and said cap and said bonnet being of metal to prevent corrosion between the parts and algae buildup.
