(Cl. 33137) ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An assembly for use in measuring for draperies at a window facing includes a measuring tape attached to a carrier plate which is provided with a perpendicular end flange to engage the facing and supports a detent carrying bar and has hook position indicia alongside the bar; a hook for engaging the drapery rod is slidably attached to the bar, the means attaching the hook means to the tape characterized as being sufficiently releasable as to allow a detent engaging means on said hook and said hook both to be moved lengthwise of said tape.
In the prior art many types of devices providing hooks on the ends of tapes have been proposed. However, it is an object of this invention to provide a tape assembly with a book which is particularly well-designed for the purpose of hanging draperies.
As the measurement of draperies can be accurately accomplished by measuring from a drapery rod downward, it is desirable to be able to quickly compute or know the distance the drapery rod is from the top of a window facing since a drapery should ordinarily cover the window facing.
It is, therefore, an object of this invention to provide an assembly as described in which indicia is provided for facilitating the determination of the position of the hook with respect to the tape.
A further object is to provide a drapery measuring tape assembly which has a flange means on it for engaging the upper edge of a window facing, the flange means specifically being spaced upwardly from positions in which a hook can be disposed, such spacing being substantial.
Other and further objects and advantages of the present invention will be apparent from the following detailed description, drawings and claims, the scope of the invention not being limited to the drawings themselves as the drawings are only for the purpose of illustrating a way in which the principles of this invention can be applied.
Other embodiments of the invention utilizing the same or equivalent principles may be used and structural changes may be made as desired by those skilled in the art without departing from the present invention and the pruview of the appended claims.

FIGURE 1 is a rear elevation of the ruler of this invention with portions of the tape thereof broken away. Dotted lines in the view indicate the upper edge of a window facing and a conventional drapery rod.
FIGURE 2 is a view of the parts of FIGURE 1 as seen from the left-hand side thereof in FIGURE 1.
The drapery measuring ruler of this invention is general- 1y indicated at and comprises an elongated ruler tape 12 having distance indicia 14 thereon. Tape 12 is preferably of woven cloth material to have somewhat the hanging characteristics of drapery.
A hook means is generally indicated at and has an open lower side 22. Means are provided for attaching the hook means 20 to the tape 12 so that the open side 22 of the hook faces generally toward the majority of the length of the tape when the tape is held straight hanging downwardly from the hook.
The hook means 20 has two spaced substantially rigid 3,418,719 Patented Dec. 31, 1968 ice side portions 40 and 42 and an upper connecting portion 44.
The side portions 40 and 42 are spaced sufficiently to receive a conventional drapery rod therebetween.
The means attaching the hook means 20 to the tape is stiff as regards bending it toward the open center of the hook and a flange means 64 is provided having an undersurface 68 facing the hook means, the flange means 64 being disposed at a right angle to the tape 12 when the tape is held in the position vertically depending from the hook 20, and stiff detent carrying member generally indicated at 78 is provided for interconnecting flange means 64 and the attaching means 24.
The hook 20 is preferably fixed to a slide 80 which is vertically slidable on the detent carrying member 78 having a plurality of openings in it, which latter are longitudinally spaced with respect to the tape 12 and are adapted to receive a nib 104 on a forward side of the side 42 of the hook, whereby when a lower portion 106 of the side 42 is bent away from the detent carrying member 78, the nib 104 can be removed from one of the openings 90 permitting a sliding of the portion 80 so that a different opening 90 can be selected. Because of this adjustable construction, the hook can be positioned in various selected positions with respect to the tape 12. The advantage of this construction is to position the hook means 20 selectively with respect to the upper end 112 of the ruler at a distance desired for the ultimate spacing of the hook 20 with respect to the upper edge of draperies to be made. This is facilitated by certain indicia marked on the detent carrying member 78 in positions in sequence and in cooperation with the indicia 14 on the tape 12.
On an opposte side of the tape 12 from the member 94 is a stiff indicia means carrier and rivets 146 preferably extend through the members 78 and 140 and also through the tape 12 and spacing means 160, other rivets extending through the detent carrying member 78 and the indicia means carrier 140 and also through a vertical portion 174 of a member of which the flange means 64 forms a part integral with the portion 174.
In operation, it will be seen that the surface 68 can engage the top of a window facing 190, shown in dotted lines in FIGURE 2, at times when measuring by the top of the window facing as preferred to measurement by a drapery rod 60.
As thus described, this invention is believed to fulfill the objectives above set forth.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a drapery measuring assembly constructed in accordancse with my invention is particularly well adapted for use, by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention can be changed and modified without departing from the principles and spirit thereof, and for this reason, I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice, except as claimed.
I claim:
1. A drapery measuring tape assembly comprising an elongated measuring tape having distance indicia thereon, a detent carrying member, means attaching said detent carrying member to said tape near one end of said tape, said detent carrying member having a plurality of spaced detents thereon, the majority of the length of said tape being disposed spaced from said detent carrying member in a direction along the elongation of said tape, each detent being spaced successively greater distances from the majority of the length of said tape, a hook means having an open side opposite its bight, means attaching said hook means to said tape so that its open side faces generally toward the majority of the length of said tape when said tape is held straight hanging downwardly from the hook, said hook means having two spaced substantially rigid side portions and an upper interconnecting portion, said side portions being spaced for the purpose of receiving a drapery rod therebetween, said hook attaching means having detent engaging means thereon and adapted to engage selected ones of said detent means to arrest movement of said hook with respect to said detent carrying member in a direction away from the majority of said tape, said detent engaging being sufiiciently releasable as to allow said detent engaging means and said hook both to be moved lengthwise of said tape.
2. The tape assembly of claim 1 further having a flange means having a surface facing said hook means which is disposed at a right angle to said tape when said tape is held in a position vertically depending from said hook, and means for connecting said flange means to said detent carrying member, said hook and said flange means being spaced apart a substantial distance whereby said flange means can be used to engage the upper side of a window face and said hook can be positioned so as to hook onto a curtain rod disposed a substantial distance below the same window facing.
3. The combination of claim 1 in which said detents are specifically openings in said detent carrying member.
4. The combination of claim 1 in further combination with an indicia means carrier attached to said detent carrying member and extending alongside said detents, indicia means on said indicia means carrier and disposed alongside said detents and operatively correlated with the indicia on said tape for facilitating the determination of the position of said hook with respect to said tape.
