SAMPLE BOX 0R PACKAGE.
No. 337,785. Patented Mar. 9, 1886.
% WWW 7 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN A. PEGG, OF JONESTOWVN, MISSISSIPPI.
SAMPLE BOX OR PACKAGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 337,785, dated March 9, 1886.
Application filed September 15, 1885. Serial No. 177,175. (Modeh) T0 at whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN A. PEGG, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at J onestown, in the county of Coahoma and State of Mississippi, have invented an Improved Sample Box or Package, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to paper vessels, and the special object is to furnish the public with a box for transmitting through the mails samples of flour, tea, sugar, and other articles which are now sent in packages tied with twine, or in paper, or in card-board boxes. These cause a waste of time and labor to the sender, while they fail to afford the required facility for examination by postniasters. Angular packages are also subject to fracture at the edges or corners, as well as to be worn off by abrasive contact with other mail-matter. In order to obviate these objections, I makea curved box that requires no strings or other fastenings, cannot be fractured or caused to open by shaking, jarring, or frictional contact with other mail-matter, and which can also be quickly opened, inspected, and closed.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a perspective view of the box as an entirety. Fig. 2 is a similar View of the body. Fig. 3 is a similar View of the cover, showing the peculiarities of its construction.
In the drawings,X represents my sample-box, of which Y is the body and Z the cover, each being cylindrical in form and adapted to turn one within the other with sufficient frictional resistance to hold together at any point of adjustment until manual force is employed to cause a partial rotation of one upon the other. A circular disk, a, is made fast in each end of the body Y, and one or more disks, (1, made fast between the end pieces, a a, so as to divide the sample-box into two or more compartments, to correspond to the number of articles which it may be desired to sample.
B B are end rings, which are made fast on the ends of body Yand justback of the curved edges which bound the ends of the opening y. \Vithin these rings B B and over the body fits closely the cover Z,which is provided with the continuous end strips, 1) b, that work over the strips 3 y of the body, so that by turning the cover with one hand while the body is held with the other the box may be easily opened or closed in a moment.
This box may be made of paper-pulp, cardboard, or other equivalent material.
In order to set up the sample-box, I first place the disks a a in the body Y, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, then fit on one end ring B, then slip the cover Z on the body and up to the said ring, and, finally, fit the other end ring B in its place. These rings may be made fast to the bodyY by any cohesive or in any other suitableway, while the cover is made to fit over body snugly and with sufficientfriction not to turn without the application of some manual force.
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is
1. A sample-box having a body, Y, with opening and strips y y at the ends, fast end rings, B B, thereon, and a cover, Z, corresponding in form to the body Y, but made short enough to fit between the end rings, substantially as shown and described.
2. A sample boX made of a cylinder headed at both ends, two end rings, and a cylindrical coverwhich turns on the cylinder and between the rings, said cylinder and cover being provided with openings which may be closed or caused to register, as described.
JOHN A. PEGG.
