TUBULAR CARTON WITH COUPON AND DISPLAY TAB Filed Oct. 23, 1965 3 Sheets-Sheet 5 INVENTORZ LARRY EISMAN ATTYS,
United States Patent C 3,311,281 TUBULAR CARTUN WETH COUPON AND DESPLAY TAB Larry Eisman, Philadelphia, Pa., assignor to Downingtown Paper Company, Downingtown, Pa., 21 corporation of Pennsylvania Filed Oct. 23, 1965, Ser. No. 503,581 3 Claims. (Cl. 22916) This invention relates to new and useful improvements in tubular cartons with a coupon and display tab and is an improvement over the tubular carton with coupon and display tab of the Leo R. Davis, application Ser. No. 309,815, filed Sept. 18, 1963, now Patent No. 3,219,253, owned by the assignee of this application.
A primary object of the invention is to provide improvements in a tubular carton which carries a coupon or certificate that cannot be removed while the carton is intact.
Another object of this invention is to provide a tubular carton having a display tab projecting from one corner, preferably the corner above the display window for the coupon, in which both sides of the display tab and the outer periphery of the carton may be printed by printing one side of the blank from which the carton is formed.
Another object of the present invention is to provide an improved tubular carton having the above features so formed and arranged that the display tab will assume its desired position when the carton is erected and which does not require any special manipulation when an article is inserted into the carton and the end flaps closed.
Another object of this invention is to provide an improved tubular carton in which a coupon is secured, for example, by an adhesive to a carton blank and which must be torn off for removal but which cannot be torn off after the carton is erected without at least partially destroying the carton.
These and other objects of the present invention as well as the various features and details of the operation and construction thereof are hereinafter more fully set forth and described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
FIG. 1 is a plan view of a flat carton blank formed in accordance with the present invention;
FIG. 2 is a perspective view of the carton partly erected;
FIG. 3 is a perspective view similar to FIG. 2 with another side panel folded down;
FIG. 4 is a perspective view of a fully erected and closed carton;
FIG. 5 is a perspective view with the medial tear strip partially torn;
FIG. 6 is a perspective view of the carton with the coupon uncovered and partially removed; and
FIG. 7 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 7-7, FIG. 4.
The embodiment of the invention herein disclosed comprises a tubular carton formed from a single paperboard blank carrying a coupon a-dhesively attached to the blank, the blank having seven side panels, end closure flaps, a display tab, a window for viewing the portion of the coupon and an integral tear strip provided in the outer side panels to permit removal of the coupon from the carton.
The carton blank 10, as shown in FIG. 1, comprises first, second, third and fourth inner side panels designated 11, 12, 13, and 14, respectively, and first, second and third outer side panels designated 15, 16, and 17, respectively. The carton blank also includes short end closure flaps 18 and 19 connected along fold lines 20 and 21 to opposite ends of the first and third outer side panels, respectively, and tuck flaps 22 connected along fold lines 23 to opposite ends of the second outer side panel.
A display tab 24 is struck out on three sides from the first outer side panel 15 and is left integral with the fourth inner side panel 14 to stand up rigidly as an extension of the side panel 14 when the carton is erected and to leave a window 25 in the first outer side panel 15 which partly reveals a coupon 26. The coupon 26 may be adhesively attached along one side edge to the outer side edge of the first inner side panel 11 by any suitable adhesive. The coupon 26 is preferably shorter than the length of the inner and outer side panels and is of a width to at least partially overlie the outer faces of the first and second inner panels 11 and 12.
In accordance with the present invention a glue tab 27 is secured along a cut fold line 23 to the outer edge of the first inner side panel 11. The glue tab 27 preferably is of a size and shape corresponding to the size and shape of display tab 24 and the face of the glue tab at the inner or back side of the blank is adhesively secured in confronting relation to the face of the display tab 24 at the inner or back side of the blank. This adhesive connection between the glue tab 27 and the display tab 24 maintains the four inner panels of the carton in tubular form. Additionally, with the inner or back side of the glue tab adhesively secured to the inner or back side of the display tab, there is presented to the purchaser, when the carton is erected, the outer or front face of the board from which the carton is formed permitting the outer periphery of the carton to be printed and a message to the purchaser of the product in the carton printed on the display tab with all of the printing being done from the front face of the paperboard.
The third outer side panel 17 is provided with weakened tear lines 28, 28 forming a medial tear strip 29 in this panel. The terminal edge of tthe panel 17 preferably is notched as at 3% and the tear lines 28 converge from opposite ends of the panel 17 toward the terminal edge of the panel to assist in starting tearing out of the tear strip. These tear lines 28 preferably terminate at the opposite ends of the panel 17 and merge with the fold lines 23, 23 formed bet-ween the tuck flaps 22 and the outer ends of the second outer side panel 16. Preferably, the fold lines 23, 23 are formed as tear lines. With this construction, when the carton is erected and the purchaser desires to remove the coupon from the carton, the purchaser may tear the medial tear strip 29 away from the carton along the tear lines 28 and then continue tearing along the combination tear and fold lines 23 thereby exposing the coupon for removal from the carton. The outer ends of the third outer side panel are adhesively connected to the outer face of the third inner side panel 13 at the adhesive area 31 and if desired, dots of adhesive 32 may be provided along the terminal edge of the third outer side panel within the medial tear strip 29. These adhesive areas 31 and 32 serve to hold the carton together when erected.
The free end of the coupon extends in the same circumferential direction about the carton as the outer terminal portion of the third outer side panel 29 which makes it easy to fold the parts together during erection without wrinkling or displacing the coupon.
FIG. 2 shows the blank in the partly erected condition ready for the outer side panels 15, 16, and 17 to be folded down over the coupon and with the inner side panels in tubular form by the adhesive connection between the glue flap 27 and the display tab 24.
FIGS. 3 and 4 show successive stages in erecting the carton illustrating how the coupon may be viewed through the window 25 but may not be removed from the carton without the carton being torn.
FIGS. 5 and 6 show how the medial tear strip 29 is torn back from the end along the circumferential tear .3 lines 28 and 23 to expose the coupon and permit removal of the coupon.
It will thus be seen that the invention provides an improved display and coupon carrying carton for an article such as a tube of toothpaste so that the carton can be erected by simple procedures and the coupon removed by a simple tearing operation. It also will be seen that the display tab may be printed on both its faces even though it is necessary to print only one side of the carton blank.
While a particular embodiment of the present invention has been illustrated and described herein, it is not intended to limit the invention to such a disclosure and changes and modifications may be incorporated and embodied therein within the scope of the following claims.
