1 Claim. (Cl. 2--169) This invention concerns a glove for use in playing sports in which a club or racquet is handled such as in golf, tennis, badminton, etc.

The object of the invention is to provide a glove which has no seams in the front between the fingers and the palm and between the thumb and palm, and which has no seams at the outer side of the index finger, so that only a thin, smooth leather facing or glove front is interposed between the hand of the player and the club or racquet.

Another object is to provide a glove of the character described which is part leather and part open mesh or apertured cloth of fabric.

For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claim in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

Referring first to FIGS. 1-4, there is shown glove 20 having a leather front formed with finger sections 21-24, thumb section 25, palm section 26 and wrist section 27. All of the sections 21-27 are integral and without seams so that the user can grasp a club or racquet in his hand without interposition of a seam at the front of the club. The index finger section 21 is continued around the outer side of the finger and across the back of the index finger so that there is no seam at the outer side of the index finger between either the front or back of the finger.

The glove 20 has a fabric back made of open mesh or apertured cloth with numerous, uniformly distributed ventilation holes 41. The back 40 is formed with three finger sections 42, 43, 44, a thumb section 45, back-ofthe-hand section 46, and wrist section 47 all integral with 3,273,165 Patented Sept. 20, 1966 each other in a seamless arrangement. A single open mesh fabric piece 50 with holes 49 is disposed in serpen tine fashion to form fourchette sections 51-56. Fourchette section 51 is located at the inner side of the index finger F1 adjacent to middle finger F2. Fourchette section 51 is joined to leather index finger section 21 by a front seam S1 and a rear seam S2. Fourchette section 51 starts near the tip of the index finger F1 of the glove and is located only at the inner side thereof.

Fourchette section 52 is continuous with section 51 so that there is no transverse seam therebetween at the bases of fingers F1 and F2. Fourchette section 52 is joined to front leather section by seam S1 which, as clearly shown in FIG. 1, is continuous along the inner adjacent sides of fingers F1, F2, around the tip of finger F3, along adjacent sides of fingers F3, F4, around the tip of finger F4, and along the outer side of finger F4, palm P and wrist W to the open wrist end E of the glove.

The fourchette section 53 is located on the side of index finger F2 adjacent to middle finger F3. Fourchette section 54 is located on the side of finger F3 adjacent to fourchette section 53. Fourchette section 55 is located on the side of finger F3 adjacent to ring finger F4. Fourchette section 56 is located on the outer side of finger F4. Fourchette section 56 terminates at the tip of little finger F4.

At the back of the glove, seam S2 joins leather index finger section 21 and fabric finger sections 42, 43, 44 to fourchette sections 51-56 as clearly shown in FIG. 2.

A seam S3 is located at the back of the glove and extends from the base of index finger F1 at its inner side in a generally rectangular position first parallel to the axis of finger F1, then perpendicular thereto along the inner or upper edge of the thumb TH of the glove, as shown in FIGS. 1 and 2. Seam S3 continues around the tip of the thumb TH, then inwardly along the outer of underside of the thumb, along the outer edge of the palm P, and terminates along the outer edge of the wrist W and terminates at end B of the glove. Hemming seams HS and HS may be employed to finish the raw edges of leather and fabric at end E of the glove. 1

An expansible chain stitching S4 is provided on the leather front 30 at the wrist end to insure a snug fit at the wrist. This stitching is entirely out of the way of the thumb TH, index finger F1 and palm P so as to leave the front portions of these sections entirely free of stitching. Similar stitching S6, S7 may be provided on back wrist section 47. It will be noted that there are no seams at the front, back and outer side of the index finger F1. There are no seams at the tops and bottoms of the fingers F2, F3 and F4 between the front and rear seams S1, S2. This construction with a minimum number of seams results in an improved glove for sports use.

FIG. 6 shows a blank 30' which is used to form the leather front 30 of the glove. The blank is shown fiat with four finger sections 21-24, thumb section 25, palm section 26 and wrist section 27. Index finger section 21 has a double, seamless width. This section may be folded on line L1 so that portion 21 is disposed at the front of the glove and portion 21 is disposed at the rear of the glove. sewn together in the finished glove by a short seam S5 indicated by a dotted line. Seam S1 is indicated by a dotted line extending between the wrist end E at one end and the tip of finger portion 21 The outer edge of finger portion 21 is joined by seam S2 to fourchette porsection 27. Hemming seam HS is indicated at the wrist end B of the leather blank 30.

It will be noted that The rounded tips of portions 21, 21 arethumb section 25 extends at an obtuse angle to the lengthwise direction of blank 30.

FIG. shows blank 40 used to make the glove back 40. This blank is shown flat with three finger sections 42, 43,- 44, thumb section 45, back-of-the-hand section 46 and wrist section 47. Scam S1 is indicated by a dotted line extending between the wrist end E along the outer edges of sections 47,46, 44 to the tip of finger section 44. Seam S2 extends between the tip of finger section 44 and the base of finger section 42. Seam S3 is indicated as extending along the outer edge of palm section 46, around thumb section 45 and outer edge of wrist section 47 to terminate at the wrist end E. Hemming seam HS is indicated as extending transversely across the blank at the wrist end.

In order to join the front and rear thumb sections 25, 45 together by seam S3, it is necessary to fold thumb section 25 upwardly on line L2 indicated in FIG. 6 while thumb section 45 is folded down at line L3. This causes the thumb TH of the glove to stand out at an angle of 90 to the lengthwise direction of the glove as clearly shown in FIGS. 1 and 2.

FIG. 7 shows the fourchette blank 50 employed to form fourchette sections 51-56. Seam S1 is applied at one edge while seam S2 is applied at the other edge.

It will be noted that glove 20 is a three-piece glove with major front and back parts and narrow fourchette parts. All seams are turned inwardly as indicated in FIGS. 3 and 4 to provide smooth outer surfaces at all sides and edges of the glove. This glove can be made in different sizes for .men, women and children. It enables playing of sports with greater effective use of clubs and racquets since the seams are strategically located to be clear of all critical areas required for proper grip on the handle of any club or racquet.

Glove 20 shown in FIGS. 8-11 is made from blank pieces shown in FIGS. 12-15. Parts corresponding to those of glove 20 are identically numbered.

Glove 20 has a leather front 30 with, finger sections 21-24, thumb section 25, palm section 26 and wrist section 27. Holes 60 are provided in the palm section for ventilation. Integral continuous fourchettes 51 52 made from a single blank fourchette strip 61 are provided between fingers F1, F2. Fabric blank strip 61 is shown in FIG. 15. Integral fourchettes 53 54 are provided between. fingers F2, F3. These are made from fabric blank strip 62 shown in FIG. 15. Integral fourchettes 55 56* are provided between fingers F3, F4. These fourchettes are made from fabric blank strip 63 shown in FIG. 15. Seams S9 secure the fourchette sections to the front finger sections 21-24.

Attached to the thumb section 25' by a seam S10 is a back thumb section 65 made from a fabric blank strip 65' shown in FIG. 14. The seam S10 is indicated by a dotted line in FIG. 14.

The back thumb section 65 is secured to the back section 46 and wrist section 47 of fabric back 40 by seam S10 and scan S11, respectively. Seam S11 is indicated by a dotted line in FIGS. 13 and 14.

Seams S9 secure the fourchette sections Sl -56 to the back finger sections 42*, 43 44 An outer seam S12 secures the front and rear parts 30 40 together at the outer side of finger F4, palm section 26 and wrist section 27 Chain stitching S4 constricts the wrist end of the glove. This stitching is provided near the end of wrist section 47. Hemming stitches HS and HS at front and rear, respectively, finish the raw edges of the leathter front and fabric back.

Leather tips 70, 71 and 72 are applied at tips of the backs of fingers F2, F3, F4 to reinforce the fingers. These tips are made from leather blank tabs 70'72 shown in FIG. 16. Transverse stitching S13 may be applied at the bottom ends of these tabs on the backs of the fingers.

The blank 30 from which the leather front of the glove is made is shown in FIG. 12. The double width of index finger section 21 is clearly shown. Thumb section 25 extends downwardly parallel to the lengthwise direction of the blank. When blank strip 65' is attached and mutually rectangular seams S10, S11 are applied the thumb TH extends outwardly at right angles to the lengthwise direction of glove 20*. Blank 30 has parallel finger sections 21-24, a generally rectanglar wrist section 27 and a palm section 26 integral with the finger, thumb and wrist sections.

Blank 40" shown in FIG. 13 is similar to blank 40 of FIG. 5, except the thumb section 45 is omitted, to be replaced by separate thumb section 65 in the finished glove. The transverse seams S13 for tabs are indicated by dotted lines in FIG. 13. The seams S9 for the fourchette sections are shown at the finger sections 42 -44 Outer seam S12 for attachment to the outer edge of blank 30 extends between the wrist end E and tip end of finger section 44*. Outer seam S11 for the wrist edge WE and palm section 46 is shown by a dotted line at the right in FIG. 13. Fourchette seams S9 are shown in FIG. 12. The seam S10 is shown extending from the base end of index finger section 21 at its outer edge around the thumb section 25 to the wrist end E. Outer seam S12 is shown at the right in FIG. 12. Seams S9 secures the outer edge of section 21 to fourchette section 51 Both the gloves 20 and 20* can be used effectively for sports use. There will be no seams between thumb and palm and between any finger and palm. In addition, there will be no seam at the outer side, front and rear of the index finger.

Although the gloves have been shown as made partly of fabric and partly of leather, they can be made entirely of leather or entirely of fabric. In the drawings, glove 20 is shown as a righ-thand glove and glove 20 is a lefthand glove. The gloves for the other hands are made by front and back blanks having the reverse or mirror image configuration of those shown in the drawings.

While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and that various changes and modifications may be made within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claim.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:

In a sports glove having the palm including the index finger portion, thumb portion and area therebetween completely free of seams, a combination of a front part and a back part secured together to form the completed glove,

(a) said back part having a back of the hand section,

a wrist section and, in the area of said thumb and index finger, a thumb section only, said thumb section extending from said back of the hand section and away from said wrist section at an oblique angle with respect to the normal longitudinal axis of said back part, I (b) said front part having a pahn section, a wrist section and, in the area of said thumb and index finger, an index finger section of sufficient width to extend around the front, back and thumb-facing side areas of an index finger, and a thumb section extending from said palm section and generally toward said wrist section at an angle approaching the perpendicular with respect to the normal longitudinal axis of said front part, said index finger section extending at said full width from the tip thereof to the joint with said thumb section, whereby a portion of the back of the hand and the back of the index finger will be covered by said index finger section, the width of said front part thumb section being greater than the width of said back part thumb section, whereby the joining seams will be remote from the glove palm, said front and back part being seamed at the edges to form said completed glove.
