(Cl. 206-4531) This invention is concerned with a combination shipping and display package having a sliding sleeve thereon, and a window therein, which may be covered and uncovered by the sliding sleeve to perm-it the contents of the package to be viewed when displayed in the package and is particularly concerned with the manner in which the sliding sleeve is designed with relationship to the opening in the package, and to adjacent sleeves in a crate, so as to prevent damage to the sleeve upon sliding it longitudinally on the package and to expedite the crating of packages prior to shipment.
It is, therefore, the primary object of the invention to provide a package for merchandise having an opening therein "which may be covered by a sleeve slidable on the package while crating, shipping and handling and which may be uncovered by sliding the sleeve longitudinally of the package to expose the contents of the package for inspection by the customer in making selection of colors and surface design of articles therein.
Another important object of the invention is to provide such a package with a sliding sleeve thereon movable longitudinally to cover and uncover an inspection opening in the side of the package wherein guide surfaces are provided on one end of the sleeve to guide same over the end of a sleeve on an adjacent package when crating a plurality of packages in side by side relationship.
Still another object of the invention is to provide such a package with a sliding sleeve thereon having an opening in the side thereof which may be covered and uncovered by the longitudinal movement of the sliding sleeve on the package wherein the opening is shaped to provide guide surfaces on the upper and lower ends thereof, which cooperate with guide surfaces on one end of the sleeve, to prevent the end of the sleeve from being engaged with the ends of the opening when the sleeve is moved longitudinally on the package to cover or uncover the opening.
A general object of the invention is to provide a combination shipping and display package for merchandise which is simple in its operation, is compact, relatively inexpensive to manufacture, and versatile in use.
Other and further objects of the invention will become apparent upon reading the detailed specification hereinafter following and by referring to the drawings annexed hereto.
A suitable embodiment of the invention is shown in the attached drawing wherein,
FIGURE I is a front perspective view of the package with sliding sleeve; I
FIGURE II is a front elevational view thereof;
FIGURE III is a front elevational view thereof, showing the sleeve moved upwardly to expose the display opening therein;
FIGURE IV is a transverse sectional view taken along the line IV-IV of FIGURE II; and
FIGURE V is a side elevational view of two of such packages disposed in side by side relationship in a crate, with one of the packages cut away to show the relationship of the sliding sleeves thereon.
Numeral references are employed to indicate the various parts shown in the drawing and like numerals indicate like parts throughout the various figures of the drawmg.
In the drawing the numeral 1 indicates a rectangular Patented July 26, 1966 package or box, usually made of cardboard, having a top 2 thereon hinged at one side and a thumb insert 3 is provided in the upper edge of the package 1 whereby the top 2 may be grasped and opened.
The lower end of the package 2 is closed by conventional interengaged flaps 10, 11, and 12 (see FIGURE IV).
A hexagonal shaped window or opening 4 is provided in one side of the package 1 through which merchandise disposed in the package may be viewed when the sliding sleeve 7, hereinafter described, is moved longitudinally of the package 1 so as to uncover the opening 4.
The opening 4 has intersecting diagonally disposed guide surfaces 5 in one end thereof and corresponding guide sunfaces 6 in the other end thereof, which provides opposed V-shaped end surfaces for the opening 4.
A sliding sleeve 7, which is also preferably made of cardboard, is disposed about the package l1 and is slidable longitudinally thereon.
The sleeve 7 has diagonally disposed guide surfaces 8 on one end thereof and corresponding diagonally disposed guide surfaces 9 on the opposite end side thereof, which provides V-shaped guide surfaces in alignment on opposite sides of the sleeve 7, the function of which will be hereinafter described.
The other end of the sleeve 7 has a straight edge 7a thereon.
The V- shaped guide surfaces 8 and 9 on the end of the sliding sleeves 7 provide a definite functional relationship with the straight edge 7a on the other end of the sleeve 7, when crating a plurality of packages with' sliding sleeves in side by side relationship as shown in' FIGURE V. It will be noted that when the sliding sleeve 7 is in downward position as shown in FIGURE I, it is necessary that it he slid along the surface of a companion package with sliding sleeve thereon in placing same in a crate for shipment. The guide surfaces 8 and 9 slide over the straight edge 7a of the adjacent sleeve 7 to guide the end of the sleeve thereover, which prevents the ends of the adjacent sleeve 7 from becoming engaged to push the sleeve downwardly ordamage same.
Likewise, the V- shaped surfaces 5 and 6 in the opening 4 have a definite functional relationship in that moving I the sleeve 7 upwardly or downwardly on the package 1,
the V- shaped surfaces 8 or 9, or the straight edge 701 on the sleeve would be guided over the diagonal guide surfaces 5 and 6 to prevent the ends of the sleeve from becoming engaged with the ends of the opening 4 to damage the package or sleeve.
The guide surfaces 5 and 6 and 8 and 9 need not necessarily be true'V-shaped, but they should be intersecting surfaces diagonally disposed with relation to the longitudinal axis of the package, or they may be surfaces which converge inwardly and intersect, such as would be provided by an oval or round shape.
When it is desired to display merchandise within the package, or when the prospective customer desires to inspect the merchandise in the package, the sleeve 7 may simply be moved upwardly as shown in FIGURE III so that the merchandise in the package may be viewed through the window 4, and after viewing, the sleeve 7 may be again slipped downwardly, to conceal the merchandise and protect same.
It will thus be seen that I have provided a combination package and display device including a sliding sleeve which may be moved longitudinally of. the package, to uncover an opening in the package to permit viewing of merchandise therein, wherein guide surfaces are provided on the end of the sleeve, to guide same over adjoining sleeves on packages while being crated, and having guide surfaces at the ends of the opening in the package, which cooperate with the guide surfaces on the end of the sleeve to prevent damage to the package and/or sleeve while the sleeve is being moved longitudinally of the package to cover or uncover the opening therein.
It will be understood that other and further embodiments of my invention may be devised without departing from the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention 1 claim:
'1. A combination package and display device comprising,- a rectangular box; a sleeve slidably disposed about the box; an opening in the side of the box; the length of the sleeve with relation to the position of the opening in the box being such that the opening may be covered and uncovered by' sliding the sleeve longitudinally of the box without extending the sleeve beyond the end of the box when the opening is either covered or uncovered; guide surfaces on opposite sides of the one end of the sleeve, said guide surfaces being diagonally disposed with l relation to the longitudinal axis of the sleeve; and guide surfaces in the ends of the opening diagonally disposed with relation to the longitudinal axis of the box.
2. The combination called for in claim 1 wherein the guide surfaces in the end of the sleeve are V-shaped and the guide surfaces in the ends of the opening are V- shaped.

Claims (1)

1. A COMBINATION PACKAGE AND DISPLAY DEVICE COMPRISING, A RECTANGULAR BOX; A SLEEVE SLIDABLY DISPOSED ABOUT THE BOX; AN OPENING IN THE SIDE OF THE BOX; THE LENGTH OF THE SLEEVE WITH RELATION TO THE POSITION OF THE OPENING IN THE BOX BEING SUCH THAT THE OPENING MAY BE COVERED AND UNCOVERED BY SLIDING THE SLEEVE LONGITUDINALLY OF THE BOX WITHOUT EXTENDING THE SLEEVE BEYOND THE END OF THE BOX WHEN THE OPENING IS EITHER COVERED OR UNCOVERED; GUIDE SURFACES ON OPPOSITE SIDES OF THE ONE END OF THE SLEEVE, SAID GUIDE SURFACES BEING DIAGONALLY DISPOSED WITH
