Description

Nov. 16, 1965 c. w. TINKEY BELT ATTACHED TAPE DISPENSER Filed Feb. 18. 1965 INVENTOR. 6 /4/9155 Ml 7/ A/KX United States Patent 3,217,55 BELT ATTACHED TAPE DISPENSER Charles W. Tinkey, New York, N.Y. (King St., Marlboro, N.Y.) Filed Feb. 18, 1965, Ser. No. 433,560 Claims. (Cl. 22547) This invention relates to dispensers and, more particularly, to a tape dispenser for dispensing tape from the spool.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a spool tape dispenser which can be conveniently worn upon a belt, to facilitate the removal of a strip of tape therefrom with one hand, thus leaving the other hand free for performing work.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a completely self contained tape dispenser of the type described which can be conveniently worn upon a belt, so that the web from the spool of tape can be readily withdrawn to any desired length and then severed for removal and application to a work piece, all with a single hand, in a simple and convenient manner.
Still an additional object of the present invention is to provide a tape dispenser of this type which is extremely simple in construction, convenient to use and readily mounted upon the belt for all types of purposes.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of this invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, wherein:
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of a tape dispenser made in accordance with the present invention in an open position ready to receive a spool of tape thereupon;
FIGURE 2 is a longitudinal cross sectional view taken along line 22 of FIGURE 1;
FIGURE 3 is a transverse cross sectional view taken along line 3-3 of FIGURE 2; and
FIGURE 4 is a perspective view of the tape dispenser in actual use.
Referring now more in detail to the drawing, a tape dispenser made in accordance with the present invention is shown to include a carrying case having a main wall 12 with a pair of spaced apart parallel slots 14 in the upper portion thereof which are substantially parallel with the upper sides of the main wall 12. These slots 14 slidably receive a belt 15 therethrough for mounting upon the side of the user.
The carrying case also includes a side wall 16 which projects normally outwardly from the periphery of the main wall 12 and defines a window opening 18 adjacent the upper extremity of one portion thereof. A spindle 20, rotatably carried upon a bearing 21 secured centrally to the main wall 12, detachably supports a spool 22 of tape thereupon, with the web 24 of the tape being received through the window opening 18 of the side wall 16 in overlying engagement with a serrated edge 26 of a cutter bar 28 carried by an adjacent portion of the side Wall 16. It will thus be recognized that the web 24 of tape can be severed at any desired point upon the serrated edge 26 of the cutter bar 28.
A front wall 30, substantially identical in size and shape to the mid wall 12, is hingedly carried at its lower edge upon a lower portion of the side wall 16, so as to pivot outwardly as shown in FIGURE 1 to receive a spool 22 of tape into the interior of the case for mounting upon a spindle 20. The upper portion of the front wall 30 includes the male member 32 of a fastener for reception within the female portion 34 of the fastener carried upon the free edge of a top wall 36 of the case which is hingedly carried by the upper edge of the main wall 12. Thus, after insertion of the spool 22 and mounting thereof upon the spindle 20, the fastener portions 22, 34 are engaged, thus securing the front wall 32 and top wall 36 in the closed position, as shown in FIGURE 4, in which position the tape may be dispensed as desired.
It will thus be recognized that this dispenser can be constructed of any desired material, such as leather, plastic, metal, or the like, provided the required hinging of the front wall 30 and top wall 36 can be accommodated and the serrated edge 26 of the cutter bar 28 is sufficient for the purpose described.
In actual use, the dispenser 10 may be mounted upon the belt 15 with the web 24 engaging the cutter bar 28. As each length of tape is withdrawn and removed from the web, the remaining end of the web is positioned by its engagement with the cutter bar 28, for convenient extension for removal of the subsequent strip. Thus, only one hand is required for dispensing tape from this holder for maximum convenience during use, for a wide variety of purposes.
While this invention has been described with particular reference to the construction shown in the drawing, it is to be understood that such is not to be construed as imparting limitations upon the invention, which is best defined by the claims appended hereto.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. An adhesive tape dispenser comprising, in combination, a carrying case having a main wall with mounting means for supported engagement upon a belt, a spindle carried by said main wall for rotatably supporting a spool thereupon, a side wall projecting normally outwardly from the periphery of said main wall, a front wall hingedly carried at one lower edge upon said side wall for receiving a spool into the interior of said case and upon said spindle, a closure member carried by an upper portion of said main wall having releasable fastening means for securing said front wall in a closed position parallel to said main wall, said side wall having a window opening for receiving a web :of adhesive tape therethrough from a spool carried by said spindle, and a cutter bar carried by said side wall adjacent said window opening for severing strips of tape from the web.
2. An adhesive tape dispenser as set forth in claim 1, wherein the upper portion of said main wall has a straight side and top edges, and the lower portion of said main wall is of generally semicircular configuration.
3. An adhesive tape dispenser as set forth in claim 2, wherein said mounting means comprises a pair of spaced apart apertures defined by said upper portion of said main wall, said apertures being elongated and parallel to said side edges to slidably receive a belt therethrough.
4. An adhesive tape dispenser as set forth in claim 3, wherein said front wall is of substantially identical size and shape as said main wall.
5. An adhesive tape dispenser as set forth in claim 4, wherein said cutter bar comprises a serrated edge projecting outwardly from said side wall beneath said window opening.
