Description

Jan. 26, 1965 Filed April 29, 1963 S. MARINO LETTERING GUIDE LINE INSTRUMENT 2 Sheets-Sheet 1 INVENTOR.
SA L VA TORE MA FIND Jan. 26, 1965 s. MARINO LETTERING cums LINE INSTRUMENT 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Filed April 29, 1963 INVENTOR. SALVA ram; MA R/NO United States Patent 3,166,847 LETTERING GUIDE LINE INSTRUMENT Salvatore .Marino, 231 Autumn Ave., Brooklyn, N.Y. Filed Apr. 29, 1963, Ser. No. 276,284 3 Claims. (Cl. 33-41) The present invention relates to draftsmens instruments generally and in particular to a lettering guide line instrument.
An object of the present invention is to provide a tool or implement for a draftsman with which he can draw faint lines on papers, such lines serving as guides for lettering.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a tool for a draftsman which is foolproof in operation, one sturdy in construction and having long life characteristics, and one which is economical to produce in quantity.
These and other objects and advantages of the present invention will be fully apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the annexed drawings, in which:
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of one of the blades removed from the instrument,
FIGURE 2 is a perspective view of the assembled instrument,
FIGURE 3 is a plan view,
FIGURE 4 is a view in section,
FIGURE 5 is a fragmentary view showing the tool in use,
FIGURE 6 is a perspective view of a second embodiment of the present invention,
FIGURE 7 is an end view of the assembly shown in FIGURE 6,
FIGURE 8 is another end view taken from the other end of the assembly shown in FIGURE 6,
FIGURE 9 is a view in section, and
FIGURE 10 is a view showing how the tool of the present invention is used.
Referring in detail to the drawings in which like numerals indicate like parts throughout the several views, in FIGURES 1 to 5, inclusive, a first embodiment of the present invention is shown and consists in a channel shaped member 12 and a plurality of blades 14 within the channel shaped member 12.
A rivet 16 extends through the mid portion of the member 12 and through each of the blades 14. Spacers 18 on the rivet 16 between adjacent blades 14 position the blades apart from each other.
Other rivets 20 and 22 extend through the webs of the channel member 12 and through oversized holes 24 provided in the end portions of the blades 14. Spacers 26, 28, 30, 32 and 34, are on the rivet 2 0 and serve to position the adjacent end portions of the blades 14 as shown in FIGURE 3. Other spacers 36 on the rivet 22 separate the blades much as they are separated by the spacers 18.
In FIGURE 5 the numeral 38 represents a straight edge and the numeral 40 represents paper on a flat surface 42.
In use, the present invention takes into consideration the phenomena of certain metals leaving a gray or black line on white paper when drawn thereacross. One such metal is aluminum and this property is well known. The blades 14 are fabricated of such a metal as aluminum or the like and upon pressure of the edge of the blades 14 on the paper 40 a line will be left on the paper 40. The provision of the spaced blades 14 secured in the holder or channel member 12 permits drawing at least four lines with one end of the tool and four lines with the other end of the tool, the sets of lines being unequally spaced as shown by the positioning of the blades 14 in FIG- URE 3.
The parallel lines drawn on the sheet of paper serve as guides for lettering.
In the form of the invention shown in FIGURES 6 to 10, inclusive, instead of the channel member 12 there is an open ended box member 44 having a single rivet 46 extending therethrough, the rivet 46 extending through holes provided in a plurality of blades 48 arranged in side by side abutting relation as shown most clearly in FIGURES 7 and 8.
The blades 48 are cut away at their end portions, as at 50 in FIGURE 6 and as at 52 shown in dotted lines in FIGURE 9. I
In use, the tool is employed as previously described with reference to the form of the invention shown in FIGURES l to 5, inclusive, and in FIGURE 10 the holder or box member 44 is shown in an upright angular position with the end portions of the blades 48 in contact with the paper 40 on the surface 42 adjacent the edge of a straight edge 38, the blades 48 being of such a material as to leave a mark on the paper 40.
Both forms of the invention have the blades 14 and 48 fabricated with central sections thinner than the end portions so that there may be some flexing of the blades in case there is an obstruction or roughness on the paper so that one blade can ride over such an obstruction or roughness without moving the other blades off of the paper.
The mounting of the blades 14 with the oversized hole 24 receiving the rivets 20 and 22 permits such flexing. The mounting of the blades 48 so that they do not quite touch the wall of the box member 44, as shown in FIG- URE 9, also permits this flexing.
While it has been mentioned that the blades 14 and 48 may be fabricated of aluminum, the invention is not to be limited to such material as it may be found that other materials have the property of leaving marks on paper as well as aluminum. Further, it has been found that the blades 14 and 48 may be used continually without any appreciable wear to the portions which leave the marks on paper. This phenomenon has been known for some time and the reason for it is not quite clear but it is presumed that either oxides of the aluminum are formed by exposure to air and the oxides are the cause of the marks on the paper.
While only preferred forms of the invention have been shown and described other forms of the invention may be practiced and numerous changes and modifications may be made in the invention without departing from the spirit of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. A device for marking parallel lines on paper comprising a holder, a plurality of separate blades supported by said holder so that portions of said blades at an end thereof project beyond an end of said holder, fastening means extending through all of said blades in a direction transverse of the longitudinal axis of said blades and of said holder to secure said blades to said holder, saidfastening means being positioned in longitudinally spaced relation to said end of said blades, means on said device for holding said blades in laterally spaced relation to each other, each of said blades being capable of independent flexing movement in a plane perpendicular to the axis of said fastener which lies transverse of the longitudinal axis of said blades, means on said device limiting the flexing movement of each of said blades, each of said blades being fabricated of a material which when drawn across a sheet of paper will mark the paper without substantial wear of the material and a second fastening means connected to said holder extending through all of said blades in a direction parallel to the axis of said fastening means, said blades being provided with oversized bearing passages to receive said second fastening means whereby permitting limited flexing movement of said blades about the ax'is'of said fastening means.
2. "A device'as defined in claim 1 in which said blades project beyond both ends of said holder.
3. A device as defined in claim 1 in which said holder includes asurface which limits the flexing movement of said blades.
