Description

April 7, 1964 R. F. DOKTER COMBINATION FOLDING CHAIR AND TACKLE BOX Filed July 5, 1962 KoberFDokter United States Patent 3,128,137 COMBINATION FOLDING CHAIR AND TACKLE BOX Robert F. Dolater, 817 Coolidge Road, Aberdeen, Wash. Filed July 5, 1962, Ser. No. 207,549 1 Claim. (Cl. 312-235) This invention relates to sporting goods and more particularly to sporting goods classified as fishing tackle.
It has long been the desire of people who do any amount of fishing from one given location to have both a suitable chair and a tackle box nearby. Somehow or other these two items nearly always become so separated when one is fishing that it is necessary for one to get from the chair whenever tackle is needed from its box. This unnecessary movement sometimes causes people who normally love the sport from ever enjoying the same. This is particularly true of cripples and other partly incapacitated lovers of fishing.
It is, therefore, an object of this invention to provide a combination folding chair and tackle box that will meet the above noted desires of fishermen by providing a folding chair and tackle box that is secured to the underportion thereof.
Another object of this invention is to provide a combination folding chair and tackle box that is of light weight construction and can therefore be readily moved about by even the weakest of people.
Another object of this invention is to provide a combination folding chair and tackle box in which the chair will be foolproof in its folding and opening.
Another object of this invention is to provide a combination folding chair and tackle box so constructed that anything placed within the tackle box can easily be reached Without one having to get out of the chair.
Another object of this invention is to provide a combination folding chair and tackle box in which the folding chair serves as a handle for the box when this novel invention is being carried about.
Another object of this invention is to provide a combination folding chair and tackle box that can have its tackle box replaced with a picnic basket or workmens tool box if so desired.
Another object of this invention is to provide a combination folding chair and tackle box that can be constructed from any desired material.
Another object of this invention is to provide a combination folding chair and tackle box than can readily be manufactured without the use of special machnery or equipment.
Another object of this invention is to provide a combination folding chair and tackle box that will take up a minimum amount of space when the chair is in a folded position.
Still another object of this invention is to provide a combination folding chair and tackle box that will not tip over no matter how much a person may move about on the chair when reaching for anything placed within the tackle box.
Other and further objects and advantages of this combination folding chair and tackle box will be hereinafter described, and the novel features thereof defined in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawing:
FIGURE 1 is a pictorial view of this invention with its chair in a folded position.
FIGURE 2 is a pictorial view of this invention with its chair in an open position and the tackle box open.
FIGURE 3 is a pictorial view of the sliding tray carried within the tackle box portion of this invention.
FIGURE 4 is a sectional view of this invention taken ICC substantially along line 44 of FIGURE 2 as viewed in the direction indicated by the arrows.
FIGURE 5 is an enlarged detail view of that part of the construction of this invention that is located within the arrowed circle and numeral 5' as indicated on FIGURE 4.
FIGURE 6 is a sectional View similar to that of FIG- URE 4 but with the upper portion of the folding chair broken away and an optional form of construction of the tackle box.
Similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views of the drawing.
Having reference now to the drawing in detail, there is generally indicated by the character 10 a tackle box having a horizontally disposed top 11 and Vertical sides 12 and 13. Side 12 has its upper edge terminating in an angularly disposed hinged lid 14 that has its uppermost edge 15 mating with one edge of the top 11 while side 13 has its uppermost edge terminating in a bevel that mates with the lower edge of the angularly disposed panel 16 as clearly shown in FIGURE 4 of the appended drawing.
The tackle box 10 is provided with a removable tray 17 having a centrally located partition 18 therein. The aforesaid tray 17 is supported by a vertically mounted pgartition 19 centrally located within the aforesaid tackle A folding chair 20 that embodies a pair of rectangular frames 21 that have a bottom horizontal member underneath the aforesaid tackle box 10 and a top horizontal member designated by the reference character 22 on the appended drawing wherein it is seen that this aforesaid member 22 provides support for one edge 23 of the canvas seat 24 by encompassing the aforesaid horizontal member 22 and secured as one can readily see on examination of FIGURES 2, 4 and 5 of the appended drawing where it will also be seen that each one of the rectangular frames 21 also have side members 25 that are crossed and secured to the ends 26 of the tackle box 10 by means of a bolt 27. One of the aforesaid pair of rectangular frames 21 is firmly secured to the ends 26 of the tackle box 10 by means of a pair of spaced bolts 28 that firmly fasten one of the side members 25 to one of the ends 26 as is best illustrated by FIGURE 2 of the appended drawing. This described construction of my novel invention of a combination folding chair and tackle box obviously shows that the tackle box 10 and the chair 20 is firmly secured to each other in a Way that permits the chair to be conveniently folded when not in use (FIGURE 1) and at the same time permits the same to be opened up to provide a comfortable seat when fishing or otherwise resting.
Certain modifications can, of course, be made to this invention one of which is the replacement of the panel 16 by a second hinged lid 29 that is similar to the already described lid 14 which like the just mentioned lid may be equipped with any desired form of catch such as the one shown on the appended drawing and indicated by the reference character 30. The seat 20 may be provided with a suitable folding back though none is shown in any of the views of the appended drawing which it may be said shows that the aforementioned rectangular frame 21 is formed from a channel shaped bar of material though the frames can be of any desired cross-section.
From the foregoing it will now be seen that there is herein provided combination folding chair and tackle box which accomplishes all of the objects of this invention, and others, including many advantages of great practical utility and commercial importance.
As many embodiments may be made of this inventive concept, and as many modifications may be made in the embodiment hereinbefore shown and described, it will be understood that all matter herein is to be interpreted merely as illustrative, and not in a limiting sense.
What I now claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
An invention of the character described, comprising a tackle box of light weight material embodying a pair of spaced vertically disposed sides and a horizontally disposed top and one or more angularly disposed lids hingeably secured to the upper edge of the said vertically disposed sides, the upper edge of each lid nesting with one edge of the said top and catch secured to the upper edge of each lid and overlapping the said top, and a removable tray inside the said tackle box the said tray having a centrally located vertical partition therein, the said tray resting on a centrally located vertical partition inside the said tackle box, and a pair of rectangular frames each of which is channel-shaped in cross section and which encompass the said tackle box to which one of the vertical members is secured to each end of the said tackle box, the said pair of frames having their vertical members crossing one another and being hingcably secured together by a bolt and a canvas seat having two parallel edges encompassing the uppermost of the horizontal members of the pair of frames which the said edges of the said canvas seat encompasses thereby providing a combination folding chair and tackle box.
