FOOT LIFT FOR RIDING GULTIVATORS.

JOSEPH B. NEFF, OF BURLINGTON, IOWVA, ASSIGNOR TO THE BURLINGTON PLOW COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
iFOOT LlFT FOR RlDING CULI'll/ATORS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 299,157, dated May 27, 18842. Application filed November 23, 1883. (No model.)
In all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J osnrn B. NEFF, acitizen of the United States, residing at Burlington, in the county of Des Moines and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Foot- Lift for Riding-Cultivators, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in riding-cultivators, in which foot-levers, for
the purpose of raising the plow-gangs, are at tached to an arm link in such a manner as to allow to be adjusted laterally.
The figure is a sectional view of a cultivatorframe, to which is attached a full view of my foot-lift.
A is the tongue; B, the coupling-hanger; H, the axle; G, the beam or drag-bar, which is swiveled laterally to a coupling block or clamp. The clamp is rigidly attached to the coupling-sleeve J. F is the pivoted point, attached, preferably,to the tongue A. The footlever D is pivoted at its upper end. E is the foot-lever link, one end of which is pivoted to the foot-lever D near its upper end. The other end is pivoted to the arm 0. The arm O shown is rigidly attached to the couplingsleeve J.
The operation of my device is obvious from the figure. WVhen the rider presses with his 0 foot uponthe lower end of the foot-lever D, the motion imparted will carry it, as shown by the dotted lines, in the direction of theletter d. This movement will thrust the footlever link E forward, which in its turn will 5 impel or rotate the sleeve arin' forward in the direction of the dotted lines a,- and rotate the coupling-sleeve J upon the coupling-hanger B. The cultivator beam or gang G,beingperpendicularly rigidly attached to the sleeve J,
the gangs on the coupling parts by a is necessarily carried up by the same move- 40 ment in the direction of the dotted lines 9. The gang is adjustably attached to the coupling parts, and can be moved laterally to plow nearer or more remote from the plants without interfering with the position of the arm 0.
It will be evident from the description that the pivotal point F may be on the tongue or the hanger or the axle, or to a supplemental piece attached to either of them.
It is also evident that the lever D can be so constructed as to be used as a hand-lever or as a combined foot and hand lever.
I do not confine myself to attaching the arm to a couplingsleeve. I wish to claim. broadly, an arm rigidly connected to the coupling parts of a cultivator having laterally adjustable gangs, in combination with a foot-lever for the purpose of raising the gangs.
I am aware that prior to my invention footlifts have been used on riding cultivators, and I do not therefore claim, broadly, foot-lifts for cultivators; but
VVhatI do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- V In a riding-cultivator, the foot-lever D, the arm 0, and the link E, pivoted at both ends and connecting the lever D and arm 0., said arm 0 being rigidly attached to a coupling device, preferably a pipe -looX, whereby it remains stationary while the beam can be adjusted 7o laterally, in combination with said coupling device to which said beam is attached, as and for the purpose specified.
JOSEPH B. NEFF.
