PRESS-KNOB Adalberto Steinberg and Alfredo Cavadini, Milan, Italy Application November 4, 1954, Serial No. 466,742 Claims priority, application Italy November 7, 1953 Y 1 Claim. (Cl. 24-208 This invention relates to improvements in snap-buttontype fastening means.
Conventional press-buttons are composed of two parts of which the male part presents a springy projection and the female part is provided with a hole or recess. Each one of these parts is constructed of any suitable material and functions to connect two ends of an article of any kind together, such as for instance cloth, a piece of leather or the like.
Such conventional fasteners are devoid of any adjustment and are therefore substantially not suitable in cases where it will be necessary to adjust the length of a belt, bracelet or the like so as to agree with the measurements of the limbs or body of the wearer.
This invention relates to an improved press-button fastener, which permits easy adjustment relative to a series of holes provided in a respective part of an article to be attached to another part of the latter.
It is therefore an important object of the present invention to provide means regulating the required length of a belt, a bracelet or like article, while at the same time the advantage is achieved that there is no tongue employed as in ordinary belt buckles, the result being that the press-button ensures a better fastening of the belt or like article, and also avoids any damage or rupture of the article, which is usually caused when inserting the buckle tongue into the hole or holes in the article.
The attached diagrammatic drawing illustrates a preferred embodiment of the invention, where the pressbutton has been applied to a strip of material or a bracelet.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 illustrates in perspective a bracelet in which the female part of the fastener is fixed to, while the male part is removably retained on the bracelet.
Fig. 2 illustrates on an enlarged scale the male part shown in section as applied to the bracelet according to the invention.
Referring now more specifically to the drawing, there is disclosed a bracelet 1 having perforations or holes 1a and two opposite ends 1b and 1c.
The fastener has a male part 3 and a female part 2.
The bracelet, on which the male part 3 of the fastener is engaged permits the anchorage of said male part as well as its removal from holes 1a.
Further the same adjustment is obtainable if the female part 2 is removable. This male part 3 may be engaged with each hole and in this present case female part 2 is retained in any useful position of the bracelet.
Fig. 2 shows in greater detail the disposition of male part 3 in a selected hole of the bracelet.
According to Fig. 2, the bracelet, belt or like article has the opening 1a through which is inserted male part 3, the diameter 3a of which is about the same as that of the perforations or holes 1a provided in the bracelet or like strip} Male part 3 consists of a hollow stud of springy material, which has a base 3b. The stud forms a hollow n d States P en projection which is open at said base and is shaped for insertion through the respective selected hole 10.
The base 3b has a flat flange portion 3c abutting against face 1d of the strip 1, while the remainder of base 3b is spaced from and forms a recessed portion 3e with respect to flange portion 3c.
The projecting stud 3 has a first cylindrical portion 3a and a second cylindrical portion 3d which is located about midway of said stud and is of greater diameter than that of said first cylindrical portion. The stud further has a first annular cavity 4, which is located between said second cylindrical portion 3d and a truncated end portion 3f, which forms the completely closed forward end of the projection.
There is further provided a second annular cavity 5, which is located between said second cylindrical portion 3d and the base 3b. When the stud 3 is completely inserted in opening 1a, a portion of the second annular cavity 5 will be located beyond the opposite face 12 of the strip or like article 1.
A washer like split and flat springy member 6 is located in opposed relation to the recessed portion 3e and positioned in said portion of said second annular cavity 5 and for removal from the latter. This springy member is in engagement with the second cylindrical portion 3d and abuts the opposite face 1e of the bracelet or like article in flat and tight relation to the flat flange 3c of the base 3b, whereby the stud is removably anchored on the strip 1.
Thus the engagement of the truncated end 3f and of said first annular cavity 4 with female part 2 (Fig. 1) of the fastener will be easily facilitated.
As seen in Fig. 2, member 6 has a radial slit 6a so that retention of the stud 3 on strip 1 will be assured. When the male part 3 has to be displaced from one hole of the strip to another one member 6 is taken off first, and afterwards the male part 3 is introduced into the desired perforation or hole of the bracelet or strip 1, the member or washer 6 being thereafter forced into place or position as shown.
Due to the cylindrical portion 3d and due to the presence of washer 6, the press-button made in accordance with the invention will not be disengaged from the bracelet even when the same is open. The larger diameter of the enlarged cylindrical portion 3d will prevent disengagement from taking place, whereby the presence of the member 6 will increase the stability of the pressbutton in its position, making it possible that the strip below member 6 may be displaced into the space formed by the base recessed portion 3e.
The press button in accordance with this invention is useful in the manufacture of watch bracelets, belts in general and similar articles.
Various changes and modifications may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the present invention and it is intended that such obvious changes and modifications be embraced by the annexed claim.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
In a separable fastener device having a male part adapted to be removably fitted in a predetermined opening of a strip-shaped article having a plurality of spaced openings; a hollow integral stud made of springy material comprising a base with a central projection open through said base, said projection being shaped for insertion through said opening, said base being provided with a flat flange portion abutting against one of the faces of said strip-shaped article, the remainder of said base being spaced from and forming a recessed portion with respect to said flange portion, said projection being proadded with a first cylindrical portion adapted to engage the wall defining said opening, a second cylindrical por- Patented Apr. 26, 1960,
