' 1 Claim. 01. 248-206) This invention relates to a device for holding a conventional typewriter eraser in place upon a typewriter, in such a position that the eraser will always be conveniently accessible to the typist.

Most usually, a typewriter eraser is simply positioned upon a desk adjacent a typewriter, or in the desk drawer. When a typist makes an error, inconvenience to the typist, as well as loss of time, results from the necessity of searching for the eraser which may have become hidden under pieces of paper, etc. Thereafter, when the eraser has been located, it is necessary that the erasing surface thereof be cleaned off, with paper, a fingernail file, or the like, in view of the fact that dirt will have previously accumulated thereon from carbon or ink.

In view of the difiiculties which have heretofore existed, it is an object of the present invention to provide means for holding an eraser in a conveniently accessible location upon a typewriter, so that the eraser will always be capable of being found with no loss of time, and without annoyance so far as the typist is concerned.

It is another object of the present invention to provide a device of the character stated which will not only include means for holding the typewriter eraser, but will also include means to permit the swift and easy cleaning of the eraser preparatory to its next use.

For other objects and a better understanding of the invention, reference may be had to the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing in which:

Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a typewriter equipped with an eraser holding device according to the present invention, a conventional eraser being shown attached releasably to the device;

Fig. 2 is an enlarged elevational view of the typewriter eraser per se, equipped with a removable, button-like member designed to insure that the eraser will be magnetically attractable to an associated support plate;

Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view diametrically through the eraser taken substantially on line 3-3 of Figure 2;

Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a removable plate of the typewriter, to which has been attached the holding plate of the invention; and

Fig. 5 is a perspective view, still further enlarged, of the button member per se, preliminary to its connection to the typewriter eraser.

Referring now more in detail to the drawing, designated generally at is a typewriter, including a side wall 12 having the usual removable panel 14. This is conventional typewriter construction and does not per se constitute part of the present invention.

The invention includes a fiat magnet, or holding plate Patented Jan. 19,-196Q being knurled, serrated, or otherwise roughened to provide a file-like, abrasive outer face on the plate 16. Plate 16 is formed of a strongly, permanently magnetized material with opposite magnetic poles, and since plate 14 of the'typewriter is itself of steel or other paramagnetic material adapted to' be attracted to a magnet, the holder plate 16 is merely positioned against. the outer surface of the plate 14, and will remain in such position, adhering strongly to the plate 14, said plate 14 connecting the poles of the magnet when assembled therewith. i

. A conventional typewriter eraser includes a brush 18 connected to a ferrule 20. Extending from ferrule 20 are arms 22, embracing between them a flat, disc-shaped eraser head 23, which is rotatably mounted upon and permanently connected to the arms 22 by means of a grommet 24.

This is conventional construction, and in view of the fact that in many instances the metallic parts of the conventional typewriter eraser are not attracted magnetically, there is provided a button member 26, having a flattened, folded head 28, with the underlying fold por tions 30 of said head being integrally formed at their confronting, inner edges with relatively narrow attaching arms 32, the arms 32 being adapted to be bent outwardly in opposite directions as shown in Figure 3, after extension of the arms through the grommet 24.

By reason of this arrangement, the eraser is adapted to be attracted magnetically to the plate 16, since the head 28, as well as the outwardly bowed distal ends of the arms 32, overlie opposite faces of the eraser in position to be brought into direct contact with the roughened surface of the plate 16.

In use, the eraser is simply positioned against the plate 16, and will be held in the position in which it is so placed. The eraser'will thus be always disposed conveniently for use, and can be readily pulled off the plate 16 when it is needed. To clean the periphery of the eraser head 23, one need merely rub the selected part of the head against the roughened surface of plate 16, thus preparing the edge of the head for use.

The button member 26 can, of course, be reused, and after the eraser is no longer capable of eflicient use, the button member can be detached by bending the arms 32 back into substantially longitudinally contacting relation over their full lengths. Thereafter, the button member can be attached to a new eraser.

By reason of the invention, the eraser is conveniently located at all times, and can be properly positioned on the plate 16 almost subconsciously, following each use of the eraser. It can be grasped and removed from the holder plate with equal ease, and can be swiftly cleanedoff for use.

While various changes may be made in the detail construction, it shall be understood that such changes shall be within the spirit and scope of the present invention as defined by the'appended claim.

What I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States is:

A conventional typewriter eraser supporting and cleaning device, for attachment to the exterior vertical metal surface of a typewriter comprising, in combination, a flat metal plate type magnet substantially greater in area than a conventional typewriter eraser, a magnetizable metal button-like member, and a conventional typewriter eraser unit having a centrally located opening extending therethrough, said magnet having a smooth inner attaching side surface and a serrated outer supporting side surface and formed of strongly, permanently magnetized metal, said magnetizable metal button-like member detachably connected to said typewriter eraser unit, said button-like member comprising a flat head "a'nd two bendable arms, said arms extending from said head for extension through said centrally located opening in said eraser, said head having a flat external surface for mounting upon the serrated outer surface of said, plate: type :magnet and an internal surfaoe overlying one tsmface ofnsaiclerasen: said bendablearms of said buttomlike member having distal ends bendable 'outwardlyr in opposite directions to overlie the opposite side pf saidxeraser thereby securing said member to said eraser, :said'fia't' plate type magnet when assembled and self supported with its smooth inner surface of the inner side upon the vertical supporting paramagnetic surface of a typewriter eifecting an outer rough surface supporting means for either the head or the distal ends of said button-like member of paramagnetic material when either side of the eraser unit combined therewith is detachably applied thereto effecting a supporting means for said eraser unit as well as a cleaning surface for said eraser, whereby said magnet remaining stationary upon said typewriter wall and intermediatesaid vertical typewriter wall and said button-like member with said eraser unit when said eraser is supported thereby or removed therefrom.
