SELF CONTAINED DRINKING TUBE AND BOTTLE CAP Filed Oct. 31. 1955 r funnaw I amrzq:
IN V EN TOR.
w I fVichoZdsRMainiere United States Patent SELF CONTAINED DRINKING TUBE AND BOTTLE CAP This invention relates to a self-contained drinking tube and bottle cap for soda pop bottles.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a self-contained drinking tube and bottle cap for soda'pop bottles which will make a drinking accessory available for use immediately upon opening a beverage bottle.
It is another object of the present invention to provide a self-contained drinking tube and bottle cap for soda pop bottles of the above type which would be more hygienic and particularly welcome to the discriminating consumer who finds it objectionable to drink from the mouth of a bottle and which would increase sales at large gatherings where glasses are diificult to obtain.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a selfcontained drinking tube and bottle cap having the above objects in mind which is of simple construction, has a minimum number of parts, is inexpensive to manufacture and efiicient in use.
For other objects and a better understanding of the invention, reference may be had to the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a preferred embodiment of the present invention shown in operative use on a soda pop bottle;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary vertical sectional view thereof shown partly in elevation;
Fig. 3 is a View similar to Fig. 2 but showing the manner in which the seal is raised to raise therewith the drinking tube or straw;
Fig. 4 is a perspective view shown alone of the drinking tube or straw; and
Fig. 5 is a perspective view shown alone of the sealing member forming a part of the invention.
Referring now more in detail to the drawing, indicates generally a conventional soda pop bottle or the like including the usual narrow neck 11 and lip or mouth 12, substantially as illustrated.
In the practice of my invention a self-contained drinking tube and bottle cap is provided for the bottle 10 and includes a resilient washer or disc 13 of rubber, cork, v
plastic or other suitable material adapted to rest on the upper edge of lip 12 (Fig. 2), the disc 13 having central circular opening 14.
2,837,234 Patented June 3, 1958 bottom of the bottle 10, as shown in Fig. 1. The upper end of the drinking tube 15 extends through the upper surface of disc 13 and is integrally formed with the enlarged frusto-conical flattened portion 16 which serves as a stop against upwardly displacement of the disc off of the drinking tube 15 as well as providing a convenient mouthpiece.
A hollow hemispherical cap 17 is provided and is adapted to rest on the disc or washer 13 (Fig. 2), and is integrally formed with a crimped, depending skirt 18 which is secured to the lip 12 in the usual manner, the hemispherical cap 17 providing an interior compartment receiving therewithin the enlarged upper end 16 of the drinking tube.
The drinking tube 15 will be positioned within the bottle 10 along with the disc 13 and sealed therewithin by means of the cap 17 which has a dome shaped central portion provided at its edge with an outstanding annular flange from which depends a crimped skirt 18 as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The washer 13 will effect a liquid and air-tight seal, as will be obvious. The washer 13 with the opening 14 therewithin will also prevent the drinking tube 15 from passing downwardly into the bottle due to the enlarged upper portion 16. Furthermore, upon removal of the cap 17, 18 by means of a bottle cap remover or the like in the usual manner, the disc or washer 13 will facilitate the withdrawal of the drinking tube 15 to drinking position, as shown in phantom in Fig. 3. It will be noted that the cap 17, 18 may be manufactured at relatively low cost without too much departure from the present day manufacturing set up. The washer and dome shape of the cap form a housing for the enlarged upper end of the tube.
While various changes may be made in the detail construction, it shall be understood that such changes shall be within the spirit and scope of the present invention as defined by the appended claim.
What I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States is:
An attachment for a drinking bottle comprising a washer adapted to fit on the mouth of a bottle, a drinking tube slidably mounted in said washer and having an upper end of greater diameter than the washer opening, said enlargement being integrally formed at the upper end of said drinking tube and comprising a flattened substantially frusto-conical enlarged portion, and a bottle cap having a dome shaped central portion wherein the upper end of the tube rests, said cap having a circumferential flange extending from the edge of the dome portion and provided with a crimped depending skirt for gripping around the bottle mouth.
