ORNAMENT DISPLAYING SANDAL Filed Oct. 11, 1954 INVENTOR Tzcrlr FRANK j sANT/s/ BY W ATTORNEY United States Patent '0 ORNAMENT DISPLAYING SANDAL Franksantisi,v JamaicaTPlain, Mass. Application October 11, 1954,.SerialfNo. 461,341
1 Claim. (Cl. 41-10) This invention relates to wearing apparel and more particularly to a sandal of novel construction affording means for receiving and displaying an ornament.
Heretofore, many types of ornamental or decorative sandals or shoes have been proposed and utilized, but in the main these have comprised decorative or ornamental coverings or objects applied to the exterior of such shoe or sandal, with the result that such ornaments or decorative features have frequently become disfigured or lost with a consequent impairment of the decorative or ornamental features of such shoe or sandal. It is accordingly an object of the invention to provide an ornament displaying sandal of economical construction and in which a recess or space is provided for receiving an ornament, such space being enclosed by a transparent plastic cover.
A further object of the invention is the provision of an ornament displaying sandal in which the main portion thereof is of one-piece wood construction and in which the ornament is received within a recess and covered by a transparent sheet, thereby protecting such ornament.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of an ornament displaying sandal in which a recess or space is provided in the heel portion of such sandal, this recess serving to receive an ornament and a transparent covering for the recess toprotect the ornament.
Another object of the invention is the provision of an ornament displaying sandal in which a recess or space is provided in the heel portion of such sandal and in which an ornament comprising a bouquet of artificial flowers is disposed in such recess and protected by a transparent cover secured to the sandal and enclosing the recess.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing wherein:
Fig. 1 is a view in perspective showing a sandal constructed in accordance with this invention;
Fig. 2, a top plan view of the sandal shown in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3, a side elevational view of the sandal of this invention; and
Fig. 4, an exploded view showing the components utilized to make up the sandal of this invention.
With continued reference to the drawing there is shown a sandal constructed in accordance with this invention and which may well comprise a one-piece body 10 formed of wood or other suitable material. Body 10 may well include a relatively thick toe portion 11, a lower heel portion 12 extending rearwardly from the toe portion 11 and in substantial alignment therewith, and an upper heel portion 13 extending upwardly and rearwardly from the toe portion 11 in spaced relationship to the lower heel portion 12. This structure provides a heel in the nature of a Wedge and, of course, the space between the upper heel portion 13 and the lower heel portion 12 may be made of any desired height in order to provide a heel of the desired height and a sandal having the desired configuration.
:Patbented Aug. .221, F1 956 While the sandal llho'f thistinvention has been shown ashaving a body of one piece construction, nevertheless, if desired, su'ch body may be made of materials other tthanwvoo'd and may-also b'e'rnade in separate parts w'hich 'are seeured together in any suitable fashion to form a sandal having in general the same structural characteristics-as those described above, =in connection with a oneipieee body 10.
Ihe iower 'hee'l por'tion IZ may' h-aVe -=attache'd thereto "a "heel H 4 of rubber or any 1 other suitable material, or, if desired, such heel may be formed integral with the lower heel portion 12. Attached to the toe portion 11 of the body 10, by suitable fastening means, such as nails 15, is a toe strap 16 which may be formed of plastic, either colored or transparent, or any other suitable material and such toe strap 16, may be provided with elongated cutouts 17 to enhance the appearance thereof, or cutouts of any other configuration or other decorative markings may be provided, as desired. Likewise, the toe strap 17 may be formed of any desired shape or contour in order to present a pleasing appearance and to adequately enclose a portion of the foot of the wearer and assist in maintaining the sandal in place thereon. Secured to the upper heel portion 13 by suitable fastening means, such as nails 18, is a securing strap 20 which may be provided with a buckle 21 or other suitable means for facilitating securing the strap 20 about the foot or ankle of the wearer, in order to retain the sandal 10 thereon.
As mentioned above, the upper heel portion 13 is spaced a substantial distance above the lower heel portion 12 and there is thereby provided a space or recess 22 therebetween, which recess is tapered in a generally forward and downwardly direction to the point 23 adjacent the juncture of the upper heel portion 13 and the lower heel portion 12 with the toe portion 11 of the body 10. Within the recess or space 22 there may be secured, as by a suitable adhesive or other means, an ornament in the form of a bouquet 24 of artificial flowers, although, if desired, this ornament may be of any other variety or may be formed of other materials. In order to protect the ornament 24 and yet allow full visibility thereof, a sheet of transparent plastic or other suitable material 25 may be secured to the upper heel portion 13 and the lower heel portion 12 by suitable fastening means, such as nails 26, and this sheet 25 extends entirely around both sides of the upper and lower heel portions to completely enclose the space or recess 22. Obviously, the ornament 24 is clearly visible through the transparent sheet 25 and, at the same time, such ornament 24 is fully protected from damage, displacement or loss and consequently, the sandal will maintain its ornamental or decorative appearance for an indefinite period of time and regardless of weather conditions or hard usage to which the same may be subjected. Of course, if desired, the sheet 25 may be suitably colored or itself formed with decorative or ornamental portions and the securing means, such as the nails 26, may likewise, have decorative or ornamental characteristics provided by the heads thereof.
It will be seen that by the above described invention there has been provided an ornament displaying sandal of relative simple, and conveniently manufactured construction and one which provides for the full display of a suitable ornament but at the same time, fully protects such ornament against loss or damage. The sandal of this invention is one which will clearly appeal to the feminine wearer of such articles of apparel and is of a highly practical nature, in that the ornamental or decorative features are fully protected and maintain their pleasing appearance throughout the life of the sandal.
It will be obvious to those skilled in the art that various changes may be made in the invention without departing from the spirit and scope thereof and therefore the invention is not limited by that which is shown in the drawing and described in the specification, but only as indicated in the appended claim.
What is claimed is:
An ornament displaying sandal comprising a one-piece body including a toe portion, a lower heel portion substantially in alignment with said toe portion and an upper heel portion extending upwardly and rearwardly from said toe portion and spaced above said lower heel portion, a toe strap secured to said toe portion for partially enclosing the foot of the wearer, a securing strap secured to said upper heel portion for engaging over the instep of the foot of the wearer and holding said sandal thereon, an ornament disposed in the space between said upper and lower heel portions and a cover of transparent plastic extending about said upper and lower heel portions from points substantially in the plane of the transverse center of said body and secured thereto to enclose the space therebetween for the exposure and protection of said ornament.
