Application December 29, 1952, Serial No. 328,420
1 Claim. (Cl. 5-331) The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in beds and more particularly to a rigid grill structure hingedly connected to the sides of the bed for swinging into a position to overlie and restrain a patient occupying the bed whereby to eliminate the usual practice of tieing the patient to the bed.
An important object of the invention is to provide grill structures hinged to each side of the bed to swing inwardly above a patient occupying the bed and locking the grill structures to hold the patient captive.
A further object is to provide a bed patient restraining device of simple and practical construction which may be easily and quickly attached to and detached from the bed and which, at the same time, is relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted for the purpose for which the same is intended.
Other` objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a top plan view.
Figure 2 is a side elevational view.
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on a line 3--3 of Figure 1 and showing the cage closed.
Figure 4 is a similar view showing the sides of the cage open and Figure 5 is an enlarged fragmentary detail of the lock for the grill covering sections.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 designates a bed of a type suitable for use in hospitals and which includes a metal head 6 and metal foot 7 as Well as the usual spring 8 and mattress 9.
Each side of the bed is provided with a guard frame 10 which is welded or otherwise suitably secured to the side rails 11 of the bed and composed of spaced parallel bars 12 which rise to a height slightly above the mattress at ICe 2 the foot of the bed and which are of greater height at the head of the bed.
A pair of hinge structures 13 are bolted or otherwise detachably secured to the uppermost bar 12 of each guard frame and the hinges are connected to covering grill structures 14 and 15 for swinging into and out of position at the sides of the bed for overlying the mattress and spaced above the latter.
The grill structures are also composed of spaced parallel bars 16 and 17 and a hasp member 18 is welded to one of the bars 16 of grill structure 14 adapted to enter and extend upwardly through a slot 19 in a metal strap 20 welded to the bars 17 of the other grill structure 15 and the hasp member is adapted to receive a padlock 21 to lock the grill structures to each other in a position elevated above a patient occupying the bed to restrain the patient.
The head portions of the two grill structures slope upwardly to a greater height corresponding to the height of the head portions of the guard frames 10 to provide suicient freedom for the head of the patient.
From the foregoing, the construction and operation of the device will be readily understood and further explanation is believed to be unnecessary. However, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction shown and described, and accordingly, all suitable modications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the appended claim:
What is claimed as new is as follows:
A hospital bed comprising a pair of side frames composed of horizontal rails, grill structures including horizontal rails hingedly connected to said frames for swinging into and out of meeting position overlying and restraining a patient occupying the bed, an eye carried by one of the rails of one grill structure and a hasp structure carried by the other grill structure and having an opening through Which the eye projects for receiving a padlock to lock the grill structures in closed position over the bed, said hasp structure extending transversely of both grill structures to brace the latter.
